On Vacation

Ah, the lure of the open road!  Back in the '70's and '80's, the wife and I spent our vacations touring California and Oregon in our '69 bug.  That car took us to some remote and interesting places.  This first pic was taken at Red Rock Canyon (Hwy 14 out near Ridgecrest), a place my folks had taken us kids camping years before.  Talk about a STRANGE place!  Let's see some shots of your VW vacations from the past...

Meanwhile, back on the road...  This next pic was taken near Jacksonville, Oregon (sorry, Louis...West Coast Jacksonville ).  I bet Bates has some stories he might share 

Jacksonville is cool, a little to close to Berkeley, Cal's twin city Ashland, Oregon. I hate that place and all the tree hugging second generation hippies, bull dike lesbos and all their damn Subaru's (no offense Jim). The place reminds me of Berkeley every time I go there except everybody is white.

Awesome pics Sarge!  The '69 looks like it was real cool I dig the turtle backs and the icicles hanging from the front apron. I also noticed the blacked out headlight rings and trim and the mirror.  Great thread lets see more...

This next shot was taken heading south on Hwy 1 just north of San Francisco.  This is where the soft lead plug fell out of the bottom of the float chamber on one of the 44 IDF's draining raw gasoline all over a hot engine....YIIIKES!!

THe second shot was taken near Crater Lake, Oregon...thankfully, I kept a heater in that car!

Not my photos nor 70's or 80's, but Erwin from Undutchables club does pretty long trips in Europe with his '58 and is a very good photographer. Some really nice shots in his site..

In 1987 my wife Lee and I participated in the California Caravan to Sacramento.  It was our vacation and on our way home we drove through Yosemite.  These pictures are from that trip.  You will notice the snow.  We ran into a storm going through Tioga pass on the way out of the park.  I had no heat in the car at that time.  You may also notice the Ford Escort side mirrors that I had on the car at that time.  They sure worked well, but are gone now.  I even had '39 Ford taillights on it at the time.  I went full circle to where I am today at near stock body work.

Here's one from one our trips to Bandimere, a 2300 mile round trip...at least the way we went, taking the scenic route and all.  This is one from 2004. No, we didn't actually drive the Blue Car there as it's a little outside of its range.

RaceHead, your photo reminded me of the time a load of us went to Mexico in the early '70's to ride motorcycles and, more importantly, test out a "team built" sand buggy.  I was working for a VW repair shop in La Habra at the time and the owner (John Havens) had an engineless buggy out behind the shop.  We teamed with Fleming, Aronson and Thurber (FAT Performance)...they built a 1700cc engine with a zenith and we went down south to Estero Beach (near Ensenada) for the weekend.  Lucky we took our motorcycles as the front end quickly separated itself from the rest of the buggy.  I remember changing the oil out in  the street as it had rained on the way down and the engine filled with water.  The Rancho Grande had $4.00 a night rooms and it was OK to bring your motorcycle in at night !  After a hard day of riding on the beach, we were all pretty tired but still went to the cantina in the motel parking lot for a few drinks that night. Seems like someone on here might have a view; Las Vegas - Yosemite (Via Death Valley), 1 Day Drive? It looks to be about 9 hours which is easy (ish) driving but does it actually work out that way? Thinking about making the drive early - mid October but are we better off stopping in Lone Pine / Bishop / Mammoth Lakes on the way?

No VWs but we were on the road because of VWs, a couple of shots from last years trip.

Nice shots, Mat!  That trip your planning sounds like fun.  Vegas / Yosemite would be a stretch IMO...you wouldn't have much time to check out any points of interest along the way.  Might still be hell-like in Death Valley in early October, too.

Here's a shot taken at Mineral King which is at the end of a long, twisty, potholed, piece of shit road in the Sequoia National Forest.  What possessed us to drive all the way out there, I'll never know...and of course having to turn around at the end of the road and drive all the way back out...UGLY!  The elevation was around 8,000 feet and plenty cold...Marmots love warm engines and also to dine on tasty spark plug wires
