hi john -- check this -- $180 for a Schwinn Continental -
http://oldtenspeedgallery.com/for-sale/southeast-michigans-source-for-old-10-speeds/
This is a much later bike than I had. Here is a site that shows my exact 1960 Continental 10 speed with the color I had:

Here in the UK we have had loads of bike builders, all producing nice road bikes similar to the Continental. My Dad used to do time trials for many years and I was lucky enough to get a few nice hand me downs... a few of the bikes were Mercian, Clive Stuart, Harry Hall, plus being related to a local specialist (Swinnertons cycles) helped and they still to this day build some of the best handbuilt frames around.
Great thread with some lovely bikes.

I don't know if the original Continentals were really great bikes, but they certainly had an impact on me and my age group. Most of us had never experienced such a light and complex bike. Back in the day I think Schwinn offered the best in America, and there were not that many "Foreign" bikes here in the era. My guess is if you put a Continental up against some of the Foreign bikes in the same time frame it would be average. Anyway, it was a great bike in my eyes and I rode it many miles prior to gettting my driver's license.
The other bike I've mentioned in this thread is my 1958 Schwinn Black Pantom. Prior to the Continental era the Phantom was "the bike". Weight was close to 80 pounds and at the time I didn't weigh much more than it did. It took a lot of work to move it down the road, but you were certainly in style. For years I've wanted another one and just over two weeks ago I did purchase a fully restored 1952 example. Bringing it home I was involved in a head on crash that totaled my SUV and damaged the bike. The vehicle is now replace and in just a couple of hours I'm going to pick up the fully repaird Phantom. I'm excited like a kid on Christmas morning.

If you like restored cruisers check out the Simonian Farms store on Clovis ave. Clovis, Calif. (near Fresno) You won't be disappointed.
Ok... you don't believe me. Check this out, even President Bill Clinton toured this place.
Not enough? how about a dozen restored vintage tractors displayed on 10 ft. pilings, or an original Mack Bulldog dump truck or an original steam
shovel? or a restored Whizzer?
Ok.. don't go! Your loss not mine!.........Just kidding....They've also got really good fruit, veggies and tasty bits for sale too.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll just shut up.

I saved the best for last, and now I'm going out to throw my Walmart bike in the dumpster.

The collection can be seen at the Simonian Farms country store in Clovis Ca. Google, You Tube, and Flicker are helpful also.

I have a '68 Lemon Peeler my uncle had new,used lightly,put into storage,and then was passed down to me as a kid in the mid '80s. I kept it fairly nice,most of the chips and nicks came after I finished with it and was stored again for years. I really loved it as a kid,but if I only realized how valuable they were going to be,I wouldnt have been even more carefull with it and not ridden it as much!

My Parents gave me a blue Deluxe Stingray for Christmas in 1966, then an Orange Krate for Christmas in 1968... I thrashed those bikes, converted the Krate to a Chopper, etc... it was the thing to do I guess. That's why it's so hard to find vintage original Boy's bikes in decent shape, especially Muscle Bikes.
I want another Orange Krate someday... (for the Grandkids of course
)
