I think it was designed in England, it was a Hillman Avenger before being facelifted and rebranded as a Chrysler after a facelift. They did a version called the 'Tiger' which was designed to compete against the Ford Escort Mexico and RS models. Did fairly well in rallying if I remember correctly.
I need to get out more I think
Tiger version
Very cool, Alfie. Thank you for the education.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_3#Unrelated_Argentine_Volkswagen_1500
Quote
In 1980 Volkswagen bought the Argentinian Chrysler Ferve Argentina SAIC. With the takeover came a new name, Volkswagen Argentina SA, and the company inherited some Dodge / Chrysler vehicles. One of them was the Dodge 1500 (also the Dodge 1800) which the newly taken-over company re-badged as Volkswagen 1500 for the Argentinian market. The estate was known as the Volkswagen 1500 Rural. Both variants continued to be sold until 1988.
The car, which was based on Chrysler Avenger, had also been sold in Brazil, where it was known as the Dodge Polara — this version ceased in 1981, shortly after Volkswagen's purchase of the tooling in Argentina. Note also that this is the car which was available earlier in the 1970s in North America as the Plymouth Cricket.
These cars have no parts related to any other vehicles in the Volkswagen range, including the Volkswagen Type 3 known by the same Volkswagen 1500 name.

Nico, great pics and info, as always. That car looks like it was designed in the '70s in Japan. Very close lines to the old To#¤tas from that era.

Mr. Ratto... paging Mr. Ratto. There's an Italian number waiting for you, in the front lobby. That is all.

A big fan of the styling of the Muira.
The folded sheet metal chassis construction can be troublesome.
That and the GT-40 inspired me to try a Pantera for a while

I don't think it's too rare, most of them rusted away in the UK though as we salt the roads and Lancia/Fiat/Alfa's of that era rust freely anyway. Although I did follow one to work the other day, cool little cars. They did pretty well rallying back in the day too
Zagato did a rebodies version of it too, very pretty little things
As with most manufacturers now, Lancia say they're going to bring out a modern version of it
Nice, but I'd rather an original one

VERY cool, Tero. Diggin' on that Speedster, although not a big fan of that color on that car. But the wheels, bar, etc. are perfect period items.

This maybe one of the cars that influenced my love of wheelies,it always left hard and sounded amazing, will have to dig out my photos from around 86,when it was still red, shame it was destroyed and although the next version was cool it lost something from the original
