Back in the day the 6.3 Benz was the worlds fastest production sedan using the same V8 as the 600 series. This was the first V8 Mercedes ever offered I think.
I've always wanted one and my heart still races when I get close to one. One day I talked to an owner and he told me what a great car it was BUT he also added it was like the Golden Gate Bridge. I said what do you mean and his reply was you start at one end and work to the other and then go back and do all over again and again and again. |

We are a lot alike regarding those old V8 Mercedes cars, John. I still smile and try to catch up to them when I see 'em on the road. My dream Benz since I was in high school... a 300 SE 6.3. Convertible or hardtop. The latter has the best looking wrap around rear window and c-pillar I've ever witnessed on a M.B. car. European headlights are the icing on the cake.

I've always appreciated that era of Mercedes and consider them the best they ever built. The stuff coming from them today does ZERO for me. Don't know that I've ever seen or heard of a 300 SE 6.3 Convertible or Hardtop. I thought the 6.3 was limited to the 4 door sedan and the 600 series only.
I do know that they offered a 3.5 V8 in the early '70's in the model you are speaking of. I had a wealthy Auto Haus customer in Costa Mesa, Roy Collins that bought a Hardtop new for 17K and I drove it and consider that drive one of the highlights of my automotive life.
Today I'm a BMW guy as I've been from the mid '60's and enjoy driving my E39 M5, a real rocket of a car. Currently I need to thin my collection and this car is on the block as I never drive it. Purchased it with 33K and six years later it has just turned 44K. A couple of photos of this car attached. |

Agreed on the modern day M.B. cars. Total crap compared to their build quality from earlier decades. The new ones just don't drive as solid and I miss the character that the older cars have. Any of the M-series Bimmers are GREAT cars. Your E39 must an all out blast to operate/enjoy, John.
