What picture sums it all up for you??

Captures what you feel Cal Look and/or VW's are all about??

It can Vintage or Current...

Let's see what we all think.

This Pic is one of my  current Favourites.  Wink   I love the the way the cars are crammed in... with people all over them.

And look at the Grandstand! Not a spare seat to be had anywhere.

That picture that does it for me is not plated. It is all in my head.
Actually in a way it is not really proper either, cause it is a thought that hit me back in '75! My mother, father, sisther and me was with friends and family att summer hollidays. My uncle drove a Consul(Granada) 2000 Coupe, our friends a '69 1600 Variant and we had a '68 1300(this car has always confused me, but I'll come to that another time).
The thing is, we had stopped in a long steep uphill cooling down the cars. Standing there, looking at the que of cars "boilling" theire way to the top a noice started to raise in the end of it. We could see no car, but we saw a 12 or 14 feet camper moving outside the hole row of cars. More and more noice, and faster and faster th camper went. Passing the whole line of cars, a greene 911 Carrera with hinge and a camper jumping arround behinde it "flew" away. When I then turned back to our own line of cars it hit me, that would be fun to do with a Beetle!!! Cool I was 9, and I was sold! Grin

I don't have pics, but I have a few...

one is the picture of the very early DKP cars parked out in front of San Diego Zoo from KS' book...I think Greg Bunch supplied the photo.... circa 1967?

another is from the 8mm film footage from DKP Reunion, movie of DDS car leaving line hard at Carlsbad in the afternoon sun (to "Aqualung")

The DKP III group shots that included Danny Gabbard's Ghia, Gary Berg's car, Brody Hoyt's car....  taken at Silverado Park (?) in 1992.

Black and white pic of DKP I cars lined up somewhere with decklids raised, was featured in 1981 (?) CAL LOOK issue of Hot VWs.

I have a question... where was this picture originally taken from? Looks like possibly from someone's old D.K.K. album.

Location could be either Whittier or near Craig Park.

There is a picture in the Hot Vws from 1980 or 1981... same issue that has "How to drill 356 drums for 911 5 x130mm pattern"
shows DKP I cars lined up in row, all with decklids open.... many cars no bumpers... wish I knew the month/year as I would love to buy a copy from someone.

The footage of DDS car is from "reunion" video, not a picture, but 8mm movie.

There have been a few images that have done it for me. Those include the famous Jim Holmes shot with him wearing the California T-shirt, the wheelie shot of Gary Berg's street car at the Bug-In; there was a street driving shot in VW Greats magazine showing a flamed late model named "Genghis Kon" that really showed the rake and look; but I think the shot(s) that does the most is one of the rear of the car, with the decklid open, showing tall IDAs and a huge mag lurking out, and the owner adjusting the linkage or timing. To me, that brings the viewer right into the mood, wishing he was that guy making those small adjustments on that killer engine.

There are countless classic ones that would take up too much bandwidth... but for modern images, I have to submit the following:

I got lucky with the lighting, time of the day, and happened to be next to a very cool car. Sometimes, photography works that way. So, on a February morning in 2008, somewhere in Burbank, in an alley... the Cal Look image that you see, here, was formed. Thank you, Sarge, for the photo op.

Thanks... as suspected, that picture came from a D.K.K. album. Jim's, I think.
