It's old school for a reason

« on: September 08, 2008, 23:08:40 pm »

I find myself looking through the post yet again and wondering if this is and addiction or a hobby.

I feel compelled to log on and check the posts at least twice a day, read all the posts , make sure I’m not missing out on that part that a cannot live without on the various for sale sections on the forums that we all have on our favourites tool bar / browsers and have one eye on the look out for the postman to bring that part that we paid for with the money we didn’t have from some far fling  part of the that globe.

I’ve got my first vw in 86 and had a few vw s but never put my finger on what it is that keeps me coming back to 70-year-old technology and a now expensive hobby.

I think it a mixture of memories of my childhood and the vws that my father had and now the excitement of jumping into a car that has 4 times the amount of horsepower it should do that keeps me coming back.

I’ve got a garage that full of old and extra parts that I forgot I had and bought again.

Another car that I'm the process of spending another fortune on and a car that runs on low double figure mpg when fuel costs are at an all time high.

When we got into this hobby did we know what we were getting into? Did we know it was a hobby that we could never get out of and a way of life that will give us memories that will live forever?

Would I change anything? My head says yes but my heart says no.

Long may it continue ……………………. Cool Grin

ahhh PUI-ing.
cool post. I feel same way. Well not the wine bit.

I've kind of backed myself into this specific little corner of interest with these cars, and you'd think, being interested in the same old thing for 20 years, you'd get your fill and feel like "ok I've seen it, done it, asked the questions, got the answers..... I've had enough"
But no. The old hot rod VW thing has haunted me since same as you, 1986, and it seems like I oughta be kind of over it by now. Nope. I enjoy driving the car more than ever now. More so I enjoy the friends.

ron im of the same mould.i had a lapse in between for a few years but i was still following the vw scene.i check on a few forums twice daily.i sometimes spend my whole evening checkin out the forums or if the weathers crap or wintertime allday on a sunday.my missus says she cant understand how i can keep looking so much without getting bored Huh i cant answer that but its something im into.i dont really get the front wheel drive brigade thing so im glad i was brought up in a different era Smiley hot rods n drag racing are also a big draw for me. like jim said the fire inside for hot vws is still burning and brighter than before.i dont understand why people spend 10 or 15 thousand on a new car? they all look the same and depreciate gobsmackingly quick Shocked my other half has the everyday car which i dont need so having my car tucked away suits me.the situations different for all.i ride a pushbike if needed for local stuff and for work cause i live close.

Definitely an addiction.
Last 10 years my 67 has been my second car. A few months back sold the daily driver and replaced it with another bug.
I now travel to work at half the speed, at half the temperature, half the comfort and safety but 10 times more happy.
Most common reaction from non VW'ers ... what the hell were you thinking.
Only a tiny percentage of people understand.

Tea and scones. Both of which aren't bad, actually. See, Keith... not all Yanks drink overpriced coffee.

It when a friend call you up and says my car will not start. So as you are driving over there you run out of fuel. When you do get there in the end and go through the car trying to work out why it will not start. To find out that there is no fuel in it three hours later.  Cheesy

You know what I'm saying Glenn thanks John tip for the day sell the Porsche and get your VW on the road. Tongue

Thanks. As for the coffee/tea/wine/Tebetan goat milk/etc, and the cookies/scones/cheeze/bagles/chocolate covered dung beetles/ect, they are out in the car. I'll be right back.
