Mike Dennis built that car years ago. He is basically out of the VW scene, other than he is the guru of CNC billet VW heads! Mike's heads are on the VW Paradise's dragster, as well as Ken Fisher's funny car (latest engine combo). Mike also made the (new) Lowry 2-piece case, but that project has been shelved for the past few years.... He lives in Lake Forest, CA, which is only a few miles from where the VW Classic is held. I know he sold that black chop top years ago, but not sure what the history of it is.... Hope this helps.

It's in the very first issue of VW Trends, great looking gasser choptop Smiley Here it is before the lettering.

I always liked that car.
Mike Dennis also did the chop on Dave Wrights '54. Anybody notice Jim Dutcher's buggy in the background of that last shot??
Gotta love those old photos...

Yeah Lids, I've run 'em before, and you're right.

Truth is, I have two... one near N.O.S. and the other just decent.
I know, I'll put the good one on my Cal-look project Oval, and use the other on my '56 Ragtop Semiphore Oval BAJA!
The criticism that the Baja Oval draws should take the heat off the wing Wink

Hey,
I didn't mean to bum anybody out about the ragtop Baja Oval thing! I bought it that way! Really!
The only car I ever cut up was that '53 Split... JUST KIDDING!
I bought the Baja Oval real cheap about ten years ago from some guy out in Joshua Tree (California high desert).

It could be WORSE, Dave... you could've chosen a 1952 Split for your Baja.

Off subject..... there used to be a Split Baja in La Habra in the early '70s. Yellow with black paint job. A real crowd pleaser nowadays.

Deano,
The one I had a photo of was all black... possibly primer. Photo was from the 60's. The car had no fiberglass at all... fenders, hood, decklid, etc were all cut steel. A real butcher job. Sad even then.
