hi guys,

i finished to build my first 1600cc engine, have rebuild a 30hp before, but never done a huge monster like this  Wink

specs:
1300 AB case
69 stock crank, lighten flywheel
85,5 mahle p/c
engle w110
74g scat lifters
heads with stock 35/32 valves, 9,5:1 compression and slightly worked inlet ports, rockers stock
full flow
weber 36 idf

hoped to get something between 70-80 hp, what would more than double my hp.

but now the problem:
-when i try to start the engine it only turned barely, it sounds like the piston(s) scraped in the cylinders, so i oiled them a little (what i´ve done before), but with no result.
-when there´re no plugs in the heads, the engine turns ok, but i think it should not be a compression problem Huh
-had another starter checked.
-i had the engine runing (don´t know how) for about 2 minutes , after turning off (it was noon and my neighbours had killed me if i had run it longer) it wont start again.

maybe someone have an idea, before i take it apart, i don´t know where to search.

can you turn it over by hand with a wrench?

in any case 9,5:1 sounds like a lot of CR for a W110

 Huh   sounds just about right to me (maybe 9:1 would be better ?)
Anyway - too high compression won´t have anything to do with the problems mentioned here.

can turn it with a wrench and when the plugs are out it goes easy except of one or two areas.
i thought i could hear a quiet scraping on second cylinder. had the heads and cylinders removed, and on cylinder 2 i could see minor scarpings, all cylinders where dry like the desert, oiled them and put the pistons back in, when i turned the crank everything seems to work. cylinderheads back on and tried to start, but nothing happends.
when i try to fire the engine with the starter it seems that after some turns it goes heavier.
maybe no oil film between pistons/cylinders? but if so, how can i fix it?

you mean the axial clearance of the crank? i have rather to much as to less. had to find it out by trial and error(yeah, sounds really professionell Wink) but when i measured it out and put the 3 washers in the right dimension between crank/flywheel i had no clearance, the crank is stuck, normally i should have the needed 0,10mm. i had tried it many times and i know its technically impossible, but so it is. the crank is from an AB case, the flywheel 200mm 12v, so i think this should work together.

thought 9,5:1 would be ok, i will try to lower the compression maybe this wil work, but it ran in this combination, even if it was for 2 minutes.

This might be a stupid comment. But then again I have been so stupid before to have appreciated this sort of comment several times. (imagine being an apprentice car mechanic, tinkering on your moped because it stalls, only to go in to a dealers workshop for them to fill the gastank and go  Tongue )

So, as your cranking speed is going down after a few turns, is your battery any good?

@ dr.jekill: batterie is ok. it´s not a stupid comment, i´m thankful for every thought, mostly it´s the easiest things you forget.

@j-f: the engine is on a selfbuild stand with an old bellhousing put on. both are connected so i thing i don´t need an extra ground strap?

Maybe your pressure plate/flywheel hits the inside of the bellhousing ?

coming home from the garage and what should i say? it´s alive!
i lowered the compression with 1mm rings between cylinder/heads and now it turns fast enough to get it started.

don´t know, but it seem so. maybe i should check the calculation for mistakes (if i can find it), but at the moment i´m really happy that it runs.
today afternoon i will try to syncronise the carbs and prepare everything for lifting the engine in the bug. damn i´m exited like a child on christmaseve  Grin

I've just put my allmost identcal 1600 in my bug but have som problems with my 36 idf.
Idle jets are now 52 but still missfire/popping on the low rpm, I like to call it lean but what do you guys think?
It drives wonderful over 3000rpm - strong and easy to handle and pulls to 6000+

Have you fitted the engine now?

What jets do you use?

jets are:

main= 125
emulsion tube= f11
air= 175
idle= 50

fitted the engine this morning, there was more work then i expected and still some work to do. hope to run the car tomorrow or at lastest wedesday, can´t wait  Wink

Assuming you had 9,5 before, then you have just lowered the CR to 8,5.
At 9,5 - 1  with a W110 cam it takes a stout starter to turn the engine, eventhough its "just" a 1600. But there are other variables.

finally the engine is in my car and runsGrin

the car runs better than i expected and its fun to drive. today we had 20°C and sunny weather so i had a real blast this afternoon and still can´t get the smile out of my face. now i´m hungry for more!
