Met Larry Monreal, the ownr/driver, back in 1988 at Bonneville. He was supported by Ed from Car Carft at Riverside and Bob Godfrey, the guy who ran the Ghia then the Scirocco funny car. Larry was running a turbo Rabbit engine that weekend but without success. It was/is one of the most successful Bonnevile cars ever, with numerous class records (as can be seen on the side of the car). I photographed it that year for the magazines.

Larry was an ex-fire chef (and probably the most racist person I have ever met – he still believed it should be illegal for people of two different races to marry, unless the  husband was castrated to make sure they couldn't breed!) who 'ran' a little VW workshop near Riverside. It was basically a bolt-hole where he could go and drink beer all day – the fridge was full of the stuff. Out back was an abandoned Baja built from a Split-widow Bug, which would have made a great project. He was/is an interesting guy but his political and social views made it hard to feel comfortable with him for too long.

If that cars is truly for sale,it needs to be bought. It is big time VW history.

It's a cool car, I think it's got pretty much the best provenance of any VW salt flats car, there have been a few but this has had a couple of SCTA records for quite a while that still stand (1985 H/PRO - 132 / 1990 H/BGCC - 164 / 1991 H/BGC - 164 / 1995 H/BFCC - 149). I think it could still be competitive too, probably not a bad buy.
