Well guys as the title says - OLD SKOOL CAMS - Lets here your thoughts I am in the planning stages of my engine for PROJECT 66 which Mr Keene is putting together for me Its based around an 82mm SPG Roller Crank with a set of 92's (2180cc) with an original Rimco case that was especially clearenced for an SPG crank, I have also lined up a COOL pair of real old skool 70's heads with 42x35.5 valves So my question is: WHAT OLD SKOOL CAM WOULD YOU USE AND WHY I look forward to hearing what you think P.S I DONT WANT A LOAD OF POST TELLING ME NOT TO USE THE SPG - I AM USING IT AND THAT IS THAT

Hi Nicolas
With that crank i would not use a bigger cam , if you make Rpm's it will not work . Sorry to say that but it is so . Old school is fine but don't use parts that do not work good .

Isn't that the whole point of a roller crank? So it revs like there is no tomorrow??

What happened to the "WHY" part of Lee`s question? I was wondering that too These cranks are not strong enough for big motors . they bend , break ... ! The bearings are not good for this applications . I only did one engine with this and it did not last long Udo

Going with super light JE pistons will give the crank a easier life... and perhaps a extremely light flywheel can be a good idea to avoid flexing of the crank?

THANKYOU Zach As I said before NO ONE is going to talk me out of this engine (Richie has tried his hardest trust me ) - its just something I have ALWAYS wanted to do, I know ALL the risks thats why the roller crank is being FULLY stripped and rebuilt with NEW needle rollers, it is also being PINNED and WELDED, as well as having an original GERMAN flywheel WEDGEMATED to it - I am only gonna be running 185's on the back of the 66 and I don't plan on launching it at 7k on a set of 7inch pheniox slicks Right now we have all that out the way lets get back to CAMS - Which would you run and why

Before choose a cam, choose the use you will really have of the car. If you plan to use it as a cruiser with some adrenalin shoot from time to time or a street warrior I think you will not have the same cam choice. And I think that the W serie from Engle is use since the 70's. A w125 seems to be a good all around cam if you read what the guru write on this forum.

I'd run stock rockers. I don't think many street cars from the old days were running ratio rockers, though Sarge could answer for sure. I think Mahaffey had a W130 in his split. Carlos has an Engle 140 in his car and it idles and pulls like silk. Or to be real old "skool" modify up some Porsche 356 or GLAS rockers, like Gene Berg did. are you going to run close gears?

Hmmm interesting...... I see what yourr saying about ratio'd rockers BUT don't you "need" them with certain cams And yes it will have pretty close gears but I am toying with a 5 speed but I am building the engine first then build a box to suit the power curves etc

FK series cams are made to run 1.4 or 1.5 W-series were for stock rockers, although later, 1.25's were added in some cases. Is a 5 speed old 'skool' though Lee? Not trying to start anything, but if you are trying to build a car that would allow you to travel back in time...very cool.... you'd want to run short-geared 4 speed and Crown solid mounts and go deaf!

I'm giving away way too much here - anyway here is a sneeky peek at the COOOOOOOOOOOL heads
