A critical patch is scheduled to be released on Dec 17. People with the Windows Update automatic download feature activated on their computers will get the patch automatically when it becomes available online.

See related info from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/961051.mspx and a 3rd party at http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/security/ie_patch_beats_coal_in_your_stocking.html

Whoa... people still actually use I.E.? I quit using that when my computer technician advised me to switch to Mozilla Firefox back in Jan. 2005. Haven't had a problem, since. Way better and much more secure browser. Do your computers a favor; delete I.E.

Doing well, thanks Ian.

Take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 or http://www.theeldergeek.com/automatic_updates.htm (pretty pictures here Wink) for info on how to configure/check for automatic Windows Updates.

Here's a screenshot of what it should look like when you click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, press ENTER, and click the Automatic Updates tab:

That's a decision only you can make. It will import your favourites, all passwords etc. The alternative is to start from scratch with every site.

delete I.E.

Well you can't actually delete IE since it's part of windows but you can choose to never use it again and switch to firefox...

Importing data from ie when installing firefox is not dangerous at all and pretty convenient.

Details?

You can also "manually" download and install the update which is now available.

To do so, go to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS08-078.mspx, locate the table that lists "Affected and Non-Affected Software", find your operating system in the left column, then click the hyperlink for the version of Internet Explorer that you have to be redirected to the appropriate download page.

i have vista home premium , and dont know what version of explorer .
i couldnt find it on the list , so i just downloaded one i found that was for vista

had to shut down my pc after download , and it restarted ok . guess i did something right Smiley

as for details , i have no idea !!
i'm just an operator  Roll Eyes

its a fancy hewlett-pachard thing , it does everything !!
talk to it and it writes what you say in a letter etc. , screen spins round and you write on it with a pen etc.
dont know how to work it , and had nothing but problems with it ....

it might have been the hp guy that told me about the updates thing ,
but i honestly dont remember as its been broken that many times .

as it is now , its fine for what i want ... 1 finger typing of emails , and bullshittin on forums etc.
i know the touchscreen , webcam , and fingerprint thing isnt working but i'm oblivious to what else is wrong with it Smiley

guess it needs to go back again  Roll Eyes

thanks for the help .....    and remember, you do make a difference.
