Hi guys,
now my motor is running i m thinking of buying a beefed up tranny ( or having one rebuilt )
so what do you think are good ratios for a street tranny?
and it should hold up to the abuse..
i will never use slicks, but i would like to race a bit as well...
for ratios i was thinking for something between stock and race ( if it exists )
i have a type 3 tranny, but dont know if they are a good or bad base to start from...
also, maybe somebody knows how much $$ i have to save for this? Smiley
btw hp of my motor i dont know, but it pulls to 7grand quite hard

thanks, Peter

If you plan on driving it long distances at a reasonable speed, then stock ratios really are the way to go. 4.12 r+p, 3.78, 2.06 mainshaft, 1.26, .89. Use 3 gears in the 1/4 mile- my friends '67 achieves 13.8's on tall 215/65 radials with that combo with a pump gas 1915 Smiley

This is a good way to work out which ratios you need.

I used to drive a irs gearbox and I put in a super diff and a heavy duty sideplate. It was surprisingly strong and it hold up with all my abuse.

hi guys, was thinking about 1.48 3rd and 1.09 4th;
that would give me 90 km/h at 3500, and 180 at 7000
what are your thoughts?

Well, if your shift point is 7k, then that is about what you want to cruise through the traps in in 4th gear, lets call it 110mph to give you a little room. That is if you want a full close ratio gearbox designed to do best on the strip. Now just do the math Wink

Fourth might be loud on the Autobahn. I'm using earplugs. But happiness is a SNAPPY 4th gear.

Hi guys,
I ve been reading a bit on "other forums" and i think i will go for a 1.48 3rd and 1.04 or 1.09 4th and keep the 4.12 r/p
now about reenforcements that have to be made?
is this about it?

Stock 002 M/S
091 1st gear Idler
All new bearings (including pinion and 091 mainshaft gear carrier bearing)
New 1st gear synchro
Weddle HD sidecover
Weddle welded 3rd and fourth
Super Diff
10 Tooth Spiders
15 tooth side gears
4.12 O or 3.88 R&P

thanks , Peter

3.78, 2.06 mainshaft, and I advise a 1.12 4th with the 1.48. With a 1.04 the 3-4 gap is too big, IMO.

I like stock ratios with 4.375:1 in my Bug. Sure, the rpm drops are a little wide, but I'd trade the bigger drops between shifts for sanity in 4th gear any day. With big cc engines, the need for close gears isn't as extreme as the smaller 1700-1900cc high strung stuff. My car pulls fairly well from about 2300rpm in its current state of tune, and kind of falls into "cruise mode" in 4th at about 4000rpm, which is faster than I really should be going on L.A. freeways anyway. I think my driving style goes hand in hand with stock 1st-4th and 4.375:1....  more sports car than drag car.
Ruff you're running a 2276 right? Maybe you don't need the close stack? I ran my 2276 with 86C with stock ratios for about 4 years and loved it.
In fact when I went close 3rd and 4th was the reason I began to hate my car.
Have fun

For a car that gets driven as much as yours, shouldn't it have a 5 gear in it?
