there's only one man who can 'wear' that plate in the UK, maybe he can spend some of his book money on it

I had DKP 52 on my, er, 1952 Bug. All legal, too (but not transferable). £26K for a plate? No thanks! Unless the lottery calls me...
FA57 RNU is pretty cool. Sounds like one for Doug's UK-based car!

Ok, I will bite
What is the fascination with vague and arcane number plates in the UK. I see these ad's in the back of some of the magazines and have just wondered.
I assume it is just like the personalized plates here in the states. Although even as cheap as our are I wont pony up the money to spell something with my plate
Seriously, I see people buying personal tags that say "911" or BMW". Kinda silly when there is a perfectly good factory applied badge on the decklid that says the same thing

i picked up mine yesterday .
CROSSY .
waited over an hour to buy it before xmas as the website was down .
then had to wait in the dmv office for 2 hours yesterday picking it up .
cost me $40.00 , and well worth the money .
my car was on its original plate for months and i still dont know what it is ,
but now , after only one day i can recite my registration no problem

you know I dont know the answer for sure, but there is a certain amount of vanity involved. As I drive around I see dozens of "911" number plates on porsches, and the odd variation of boxster. If I could find one I liked I would go for it if I could afford it, I once saw SJB 911 - my initials but I think it was about £5000. I would seriously consider SJB 356 or EMP 166 if they exist and I had the money to do it (not likely). The other thing is that you can often sell them for the same price if necessary, so whilst it is an expensive way to personalise your car you can always sell them on and get the money back. Having said that, £25k is a lot of money! I think I can recall hearing someone had "A1" on a ferrari over here which would look pretty trick.

Coolest one I saw was on a TT when they very first came out, it was I think the first TT I saw on the road aand it was all black, reg no. read ghost (can't recall the combo of letters numbers though).
BTW, I think a lot of UK folks don't get why people buy them either!

What are the prices based on? Dunno, just seems like paying someone to put your name on the tags of your underwear.

There have been a number of scams recently involving that companies plates.
Someone will order a set of plates that match some historically significant ones.
Then buy a pair of genuine vintage plates for the dated stickers.
remove them with a heat-gun and place on the new plates with spray adhesive.
Then all you need is a B.S. story on hw you cam to own them and put an ad on the Samba or e-bay, etc..
I have seen some fake plates go for $1, 500 to unsuspecting buyers !

Book money? If you only knew...
I bought the plate from DVLA about 8 years ago for £250. The cheapest 'name' plate ever!
