Mid seventies.
The car was painted orange primer first time I saw it in Malmö Sweden 1975.
It was built by the three man team from Hot VW pictures and mostly inspired by Inch Pincher.

It then in turn inspired me and my partner to build a VW dragster few years later.
The car changed owner early eighties to Hazze Lindholm. After Hazzes ownership, I bought the car and had it for some years with different engines. I sold it to Germany after Mats Herrlander borrowed the car and he ran it to a win in Giebelstadt race, in again Germany.
One or more owners in between and today Udo is successful owner/racer of this fantastic European VW history.

In Germany we had not much Cal-Look in the earlier days , but Racing  Cheesy . this is a picture from Hockenheim where a dragrace called "Käferblasen" started in the 70's . The event continued at Erlensee and Giebelstad on american millitary airfields  Cheesy. It stopped in 92 when they closed Giebelstadt for racing  Sad . It was a large event of racers and spectators each year
I tried to continue with this event somewhere but in Germany nobody has interest .

I have been at the last races in Giebelstadt. For me it was the first time I got in touch with Drag Racing. I still have the ticket for the last one:



On the Hockenheim picture you can see a young Ronald Juetting (middle front), today he's racing a VW-Paradise turbocharged mid engined "New Beetle" Speedster, in front right there's Jerry Lackey and his "All American Bug". Jerry is something like the german Don Garlits...

And regarding getting the ST MORITZ FASHION paint design back on your car: DO IT!

Jon , i have a video from hockenheim when Karl Heinz Kremmling drove the car once . I try to play it on my PC , so all can see how the car looked like whe i got it ,  this is the only version nobody except me knows . And some germans ..

Wow, that sounded wicked Udo!! So he was in this paint when you bought it?
Did you replace the tube axle or was it already done when you got it?
I just just try to imagine how it would look in the St Moritz fashion paint.... breathtaking!!
We should get Frallan, Herrlander, Eric Lindgren, Göran Nilsson and Leif Lövendahl in the same room and have them point out what colors to use.

I suggest you bring your house of colors paint swatches up to the JPM Dynoday this fall!! I know Frallan and Herrlander usually attends...
I'll make the text for the doors for you if you do!

I have the original Start&Speed article with good color pictures but also 99.98% clear memory which tones the design had.
Pirk the painter is if I am not totally wrong, is still around in Sweden. One of the few super guys that has not moved to Hot Rodder heavens in South LA.
Not that I think he would paint but maybe he could give some free advice?

Furthermore I could ask nicely to my drag race partner Bengt Lindberg if he has original slides form the late 70s. He took a lot of them at the time.
Now, that is only if this becomes a "restore original paint" project.
One problem exists....the car was not top chopped with that paint.

I verify. The tube axle was "criminal" in a view point from todays standard.
Not that it could not work but the way it was done, it was so flimsy that it surprising nothing serious happened.

First time out for me I almost flipped the car.
That was not fault of the front end but rather toe out.....still I would not lift. In some way I sorted it out going from side to side but for sure it could have been an end to that car.

I have some other garage pictures from my ownership time. I will see what more I can dig out.
I will also post the Start & Speed article with color pictures. I know it has been done somewhere else to but so what.

Mate Herrlander to the left popping in his 2333 in to my car and dyno rolling it.

Me running it with my 911 OHC cam engine out of the Pank dragster.

So , it took me a looong time , but finally it happens !



S:t Moritz is getting the treatment it deserves !



The body is off and gone for media blasting . Weight saving is a point too , because it is still going to be raced hard .
Good looking but still a racecar.
At the same point the rollcage is out , was OK for the 70 s but nowadays ?!?
Of course the new cage will be oldschool looking , bent tubes instead of crossed bars in the door section for example ….
The old cage was also pretty heavy steel , my aim is , Oldschool look , less weight with more safety .
I do it once , so I do it right .

By the way , anybody got a small aluminium tank up for sale ? Max 1 gallon

When i bought it , I wasn‘t aware either , Udo told me the story later on .
I remember when I first talked to Udo , he asked me :
What engine are you gonna put in ?
I said Typ 1 , maybe 1835 .
He just said right answer ! If you need help let me know Wink

#1:40 minutes. A super 8 movie. No sound.....
This is really historical video of the car as it was racing in 1976. First year. No paint, just raw.
The location is the first year of real Drag Racing on the Bulltofta air strip in Malmö.
I built small aircrafts at SAAB Malmö Flygindustri just on the other side of the strip. This was very "high time" for me and for sure shaped me in to the weirdo I am today.
If I had known that I would own it myself and race that car later, wow.... I did not even have a driving license, until end of the year.
