My 62 ragtop - boat anchor powered!

Thought I would share a few pics of my 62 type 117.
I bought the car back in 2003 in Sweden. I got the car registered and used it ALOT the following years.
I build myself a 1914 with w120, ported 40-37,5 heads (homeported), 40 dells etc. etc.. Later I bought BRM´s and T-bars, and got the front and rear rideheight sorted out. I fell more and more in love with the whole Cal-look thing
....
I then redesigned my old 1914 design and tried to get as much HP out of the 40 dells as possible. Parts now included w130, 1.25:1 rockers, 10.8:1 CR, but still the same heads as before. Dynoreadings showed 147HP, and I was happy
Then sold the 1914 engine, and fitted a 1.8L type 4 engine (upright conversion). Also fitted my newly built 3.88x0.89 gearbox at the same time.
I then decided to completely restore the car. The car had always been kind of a beater, but I now wanted a nice car!
Everything on the car has been taken apart and re chromed, re galvanized etc. etc. New bearings everywhere, and the list goes on. Tried to get hold of as many NOS Volkswagens parts as possible.
I finished the resto august 2008, and by that time I fitted a 1600SP industrial type 1 engine with twin 32 pbic carbs and some other stuff (60hp- dyno).
I did all of the work myself, except most of the welding, sandblasting and painting the body.
I am now in the process of building my new engine, which is a 2.0L type 4 engine with upright type 1 conversion. Heads and pistons are from 914 2.0L.
Here is a few pictures of the car from when I bought it in 2003 and up to april 2009
(click one of the pictures and you can browse them in fullscreen mode)

I'm at work, so can't see many of the pictures
But the one of the "Magneto" I can see, have read about this mod somewher before, and was thinking on doing such a thing too.
Actually as it is fake, it is lame
But it does look the part, and that is a big part of how we appreciate our cars

As much as I hate giving you compliments in public
I have to say that that breather box location instead of the type 1 doghouse is a neat trick, and could actuaaly be taken up to be copied.

Nice meeting you guys too, and thanks for the compliments!
The best thing about the show was that the callook class was won with a car with a type 4 engine
And we tested the engine hard on the autobahn - 100km drive without stop and with constant speed of 150km/h (41-4200rpm) = 85 degree oil temp.!!!!! We could not believe this was true, so we checked with laser temperature gauge, but the engine did not exceed 85degree (celcius) oil temp. We tried to measure the headtemp with the laser too, but it was hard to get a good reading, since the head is all covered in cooling tin. I will try to mount a headtemp gauge next time. We had no problems what so ever with the engine, and it had good fuel economy too. We drove 1300km in less than 48 hours, and the 620km drive home took 7 hours including stops and eating.
I have to say that I am very very impressed with the type 4 cooling abilities. This engine combo gives me the look and performance I want, and it has good cooling abilities - and it will hopefully last many many more miles.

Hi Rasser,
Looked at your post again and saw you have almost the same header as I do, is it a 1-5/8 (41mm)? and if yes what muffler are you using.
A lot off muffler are only 1-1/2 (38mm)...don t knoww if that is ok to use.
Kind Regards Edgar

Hi Eddie
I am using a 1½" merged header, and a 2½" MagnaFlow XL 3 Chamber Muffler.
Here is a picture of my current setup with the 2½" Magnaflow XL muffler
Good luck with the build
