fairly stupid question I suspect! From what I remember the engine is not directly earthed but the gearbox should have an earth strap ? Is this right? I'm trying to think from when I last took the motor out of the bug and my ghia!

Correct. But not necessary if you have rigid mounts.

Since your engine and trans case are both Mg, they corrode badly.  You should always sand the contact areas to bright metal to ensure good conductivity.  Especially if they are painted.  Don't forget the alternator stand too.
