Cal-look is rooted in the drag race scene, so I was curious, aside from the obvious gassers of the 60's & 70's, what recent-ish race cars (80's and on) have influenced you or just plain turned you on Grin over the years?

Here's a few of mine in no particular order:

Kris Klingamans (sp?) awesome late bug:

Don Cossey's fastback:

Closer to home (in fact about 10 minutes away!), and moving to present day, Jon Rathbones bug:

And you just have to love the Hunsaker racing bug:

Also Boom Boom Bubetz bug (when it was blue, early 90's), can't find a picture, but I love that car!

Berg black sedan
Crawford's sedan from 10 year or so ago (Brinton and Dom drove)
Beetle Juice turbo sedan
Tanfastic turbo car
Dave Perkins blue turbo car

not sure any of these influenced my car, but they always stood out to me.

Have none of you guys actually read the original question? How has a full on pro turbo car or tube chassis pro mod car influenced your car? I understand you liking the aforementioned cars but how have they influenced your car? Did you install red anodized aluminum door panels because the Berg's car has them. Did you run a 4.86 R&P, 4.11, 2.47, 1.71, 1.36 gear box because Mike Smith did? 72 x 88 FK-89 street motor? Show us how they truly influenced your car. I for one have always liked the Stinger Ignition found on Mike Smith's, The Berg's and Wade Nishimoto's cars.

the first DDS car for me, hence why I now have DDS manifolds and linkage installed along with bucket seat and aluminium door panels.  The only thing missing are the wheels, but EMPI sprints will have to do until i win the lottery.

The Berg Black 67. That car is just beautiful and it was still racing in the 80s and 90s.

I can't help but wonder how many people Cossey ripped off to build the fastback... on a similar note, are the DeCoppen boys still in jail? Grin
Cossey is well known throughout VW circles as a thief and rip off artist, but I'll admit that the crack about the DeCoppen brothers is based on second hand information that at least one of them went to jail.

Ron Fleming pretty much did it all for me....

Built my first vw in late ´82, an original, ´63 bug with no bumpers and 60kg of cement under the front hood to get the front end down.
I really should have known better after reading "How to Hot-Rod VW engines" and various other publications Roll Eyes Grin.

That was followed by a Type 3, and later a Type 2, before finally seeing the light again with a DKP styled bug in ´91.
In ´94 I started on the ´52 bug. The whole idea about building it like it was found after years in a barn, was pretty simple.
I just didn´t feel good about having to polish the BRMs every single day, only to see them vanish before my eyes. So I decided to let them stay oxidized.
Pretty much I built a car around the wheels...sorry...a bit off topic there.

Please carry on...

Paul
