I've got the 49 in bits again waiting for my new gear box , looking at my current rear tyre's 205 70 15 Avon's Im thinking that they may be a bit too wide and the traction they offer may be detrimental to the longevity of my new box .
Having not dynoed my motor yet guessing Im pushing around about 160 -> 170 bhp through my new box which has pretty standard gearing super beetle main shaft (not gonna be doing that much track more street ) 4.12 R/P , heavy duty side plate's , super diff and type two hubs for the security offered by the bigger CV,s.
Im considering getting a pair of 185 70 15 P6's , thinking the initial loss of traction would be better than the good hook up I've currently got and of course they look very old school  Roll Eyes
Thought's please  Smiley

the 185/70 is a much shorter tyre, will change your gearing and make it a pain except around town, and you can get just as much traction with a 185,its driving style and control that will affect it more, launch like Martin and you will be fine Wink

I had a more or less stock trans and it lived with 205/70 15s. If you're worried about them not breaking traction rub some of that tyre black stuff on the treaded part.

it really is personal choice,i think 195/65/15 is proberly the best compromise,

175/70's are too short. The Pirelli 185/70's are great, much better price than the Michelin's BUT they don't make a 145 for the front anymore Tongue
