Mark Tomlinsons bug not sure if it is or isn't Gyles', but Marks was built up from a brand new VW pan.
2276 motor on 45 dells, pro street box, 911 front seats - a really nicely done late looker! All being well he's giving it the beans at the UK Drag Day in two and a half weeks time...
Cool!
So Gyles, is that you Mark or someone else on with a late looker?

Bloody Hell, you lot make Sherlock Holmes look slow!
, but I'm glad you approve.
I was gonna run with a few photos every now and then and show the build up over time, but I suppose thats that idea buggered.
Yup, that is my polished turd all finished at the Volksworld show, but I'm stumped as to how yer figured it out.
Had a few teething troubles, but the motor is running smooth as a babys bum. 155.5hp(don't forget the point five!) and 145 torqes at about 5500rpm.
Hopefully I will be attending the drag day, although I am not booked in yet. Being a racing virgin I am open to advice, but I suppose we disuss that elsewhere?
I have other outside influences trying to get me to run low pro tyres on the front. Thoughts?

Yeah very nice car!
As for the racing advice: When the light turns green, smash the gas pedal with your foot and realease only when you pass the finish line. Change gears when needed.

Well, here we have a 'pan. Built on a brand spanking mexican lump of metal (converted from LHD to RHD), all etch primed and painted in the devils own black with lots of laquer. Adjustable rear spring plates hold the stock axles with type 3 drums and an h/d anti-roll bar with spax gas adjustable shock all round. Axles are spun via a Rancho Pro Street 'box with 4.125 r&p, super diff, h/d side plate and welded gears. Front beam is a 2" narrowed adjustable unit with 2" dropped forged spindles holding some 'BAD' brakes and hubs from Airkewld. Also an h/d anti roll bar up front (this 'pan is super stiff!). On wide 5 studs with the infamous Erco rims, running 155 Mich XAS (yes, I should put my mans pants on and run 145) up front on 3.5" rims and 6" rims on the back with Goddrich Macadam 205/70 tyres. Then you have all the obvious new brake lines, bushes, z-bar, scat dragfast shifter, etc....
And now I got it all dirty and gnarled up the bottom of my front beam!

Thanks for all the great encouragment chaps. It's good to get a stoke from other people
The 'pan and body were kinda done separate. I built the 'pan up (except the paint) and the body was taken care of by MAL down here in Cornwall. It was only ever meant to be a patch up job, but we got carried away. I had already replaced both front quarters, spare wheel well, rear valance, both heater channels and the A post bottoms. All that had taken since 2000, so it was decided to get serious or I would never get it done. After shot blasting we could see there was no point in a patch up job.
and
On top of the work I had done myself, Mat and Adrian at MAL fitted another spare wheel well (the one I fitted had started to rot
), a pair of original VW rear quarters (a pain in the arse to source), front bulkhead (not easy to convert to RHD), pair of original VW doors, VW bonnet, another rear valance as the one fitted was just dreadful quality, rear cross members, new rear floor/engine firewall and a quartet of day mouldings 'glass wings. Phew
After all that the fun really started..., but your not interested in that surely!

OK, maybe a bit heavy on the body work details. Shall I skip the rest (dechroming, VW safari beige paint etccc...) and get to the fat bit?
ITS ALL ABOUT THE MOTOR
It was built by the industrious M.K. at Airkraft in deepest Cornwall. Originally destined for his own bay window (so it's built to meticulous tolerances) it is built to deliver endless torque all day long rather than a short scream then a rebuild. Obviously it never made it into his bus as it now resides in my '73.
2276cc type 1 built around a new 'case, drilled and tapped for full flow oil system
82mm CB cro-mo crank
engle FK8 cam with s/c gears
CB 1.4:1 ratio rockers
Manton cro-mo pushrods
Scat H beam con rods
Scat super D 94mm heads. 42mm exhaust 37mm inlet, 3 angle valve job
Scat cro-mo flywheel
Kennedy stage 1 clutch
Twin dual Dell'orto DRLA 45mm carbs, Gene Berg linkage
Pertronix ally distributor, electronic ignition
Scat deep sump
CR 8:1 (future turbo material
)
All balanced to 0.5 F1 tolerance by John Maher
Recently tested on rolling road at 155bhp at flywheel, 145 torques at around 5500rpm.
Its no slouch, I think it hits 60 around 6 secs. Never been up the strip, so I don't have any 1/4 mile times.
all day long!

Just to keep all you power perverts happy, I remembered I didn't post any pics.
The hose unions have since been replaced with satin black ones and the coil is now a black flamethrower. The twin quiet pack was just for the cam break in and is now a large stainless header. If I remember will post a more up to date image. Enjoy

As promised, an updated pic of my motor. Not much difference, but it's the small things that count. Well that's what my missus tells me
Thought I had better throw in a pic of the interior too (just pretend I had been arsed to clean the floor mats, OK!
).

Quick update.
Seeing as I am taking the car to the 'Drag Day' next weekend something had to be done about wheel hop.
Just spent all day fitting a set of CSP Torque Bars to the rear end.
It's actually a reasonably straightforward task, if time consuming. If anyone is bothered I will report back on the outcome.
