Yippee! Gyles now has new heads, with Kahuna valves, but is still indecisive about cams. Go for the chest wig and medallion, or settle for the excellent all-round FK87? What do you reckon folks? Muffler Mart?

Before I used it on the strip I did use it on the street to run it in/bed the car in. Found it surprisingly streetable, over 2750 rpm it was like any other car i have driven (just faster) and didnt have to constantly shift down gears/rev it hard etc. I dont have 3rd progression mod on the IDA'S and it would still pull away at low revs with no major dramas. I did consider the FK89, but felt the 87 was ideal.

The 2007cc/48DRLA motor I've got has an FK87 in it too. I originally borrowed it from Duane and Brett, who had broken the gearbox in the "Short Arse Shaker" car at Bug Jam 2004, and I'd blown my flanged crank/superflo headed 2276. As I said, I ran it at Bug Jam, where as you know, you need to drive the car all around the place just to get up to the fire-up road! It was as docile as a stocker at low revs, but ran 12.50s in my car (1640lbs with me in it), compared to 12.teens from my next seasons 2276 FK89 IDA motor.
In a dual purpose street/strip car, I think it would be ideal if you've got the gears for it.

Neil has made a very good point about gearing and docility. In your car, Gyles, you would probably need to change the ratios on third and fourth in order to make an FK89 work in a heavy car. Stick to the 87 and I can tell you from experience that even with fairly tall gears and excess lard, your motor will pull nicely throughout the rev-range and really haul when you hit 3,500 rpm Cool

Thanks for the big up Mr Nut.  Your cars none too shabby either; nowt wrong with a late looker in my opinion Cool

The super D/Dellorto combo was great.  Bags of torque all through the rev range, with the carbs as smooth as you like.  No hesitation or stuttering anywhere.  They were great for the street, which is where I originally planned to drive it, but the lure of the strip seems to be calling strong  Grin

Sounds like you should end up with quite a pokey motor there.  Enjoy Wink

OK, it's decided.  I know someone is bound to give me stick, but its the FK87.  Together with the Ultra Mag Plus heads (44x37) and the 48IDA's it should be good enough for a beginner Wink

The only thing left to decide is the CR.  9.5:1 or 10:1  Huh

OK, so maybe the cam wasn't the only thing I am gonna  get stick about  Roll Eyes

I am always open to advice, but bearing in mind it is a fairly fat car I still want to be able to drive on the street, what would your ideal CR be then Huh
