My wife and I had a great weekend in Cambria.
Saturday late into the evening at the Fog Catcher was surreal.
R Gruppe vintage iron, smell of salt air, Pacific ocean’s unvarying roil, passing pockets of fog, created the Cambria magic that spurred several spontaneous parties.

The R Gruppe pulled off another track day, it is a riot to watch the cars driven as they were meant to be.
My in car video was not on but my mind flashes to Pete Johnson in the right seat as we freight trained around following Johnny Riz with Thorsten shot gun as we both kept a close interval behind the engine of this train none other than Chuck Miller.
Having a passenger in the car is a blast, I only went out once alone for 3 laps at the end of the day.

First session in the morning my rider was an older gentleman we had met at the track hotel. Chris and Monica looked like anyone’s grandparents as they parked in the handicap spot next to my 911. A group of us on the balcony struck up a conversation with them and Chris surprised us all by delaying his drive back to New Mexico and instead showing up at the track first thing in the morning. Seems Chris is a computer gamer of sorts and a great rider too. Afterwards we joked that his trip west slide show might surprise friends when he shares his first ever experience circling a dedicated track.

My buddy Patrick is an accomplished track driver and this was his first time at Buttonwillow. After a ride with me he found places to improve and lowered his lap times by almost 3 seconds. As a PCA Nationally certified instructor that feedback I find most rewarding.

The track sound that I can’t shake was my screaming Hankook RS2 tires, they screamed so loud I was told people in the pits ¼ mile away spun to locate the source of tortured tires. I’m a new fan of street tires and mufflers on the track.

The tours are always fun, a fun challenge to both create and then navigate. The next time a Treffen is in Cambria we could form a small tour committee with the likes of Roger Grago, Paul Kramer. The Aubergine tour should be put on paper for future events, Grago’s Saturday 80 mile tour through stunning/winding roads just north of Vineyard and 46.

Thanks to our V1 we avoided several radar traps and survived ticket free.
The morning after our return I found a flat rear tire on my 911.
It was just a failed Schrader valve kept undamaged by R Gruppe karma till safely back in my own garage.
