I soldered mine and drilled them to size.
What you really will notice when making them smaller is that throttle response at low rpm, will be a lot better (realy noticeable when cruising below 2000rpm and trying to increase speed a little). Well, at least thats my experience.
I have emailed a lot with Bud Hauge from redlind weber, and he has really helped me a lot with the understanding of the idle circuit on the 48´s. He was right about EVERYTHING he told me to do to my carbs. That guy knows his shit!
