Been giving some serious thought to building this one. Long time hot rodder and Bug fanatic finally can blend the 2 passions. Was a popular topic tonight on my SO-CAL Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/socalspeedshopla and my forum "The Garage" http://traditionalspeedandkustom.com/thegarage/index.php?topic=1011.0
Last few times I tried checking out this forum it was down. Glad to see it back up. Thanks, Jim Aust SO-CAL Speed Shop L.A. President

Hot rodders have to have a RAKE! Even the DKP rules state- "Stock in the rear, lowered in the front- ONLY!"

Kidney Bean-style rims, cool nerf bars and paintjob... Great idea, Jim!

The drawing is pretty loose, I want it to be an oval with DKP stance.

Looks very cool Jim. Blurs the line between Cal-Look and Hot Rod.

Rick, That's where my head has been for 35 years! My dad and I built hot rods, but all my uncle's drove Cal-Lookers. I have had both, but this is where I want them to meet. I see A LOT more VWs attending street rod & hot rod events in the future. I haven't seen much grief about including VWs on any of my hot rod sites. I know a ton of the well-known hot rod builders and most are pretty fond of them.

I'm right there with you. Always loved both. Had VWs since I was a teen. Finally got a hot rod about 6 years ago... '26 T roadster. Be neat to see what you come up with,

That looks really sweet. There was an illustration in one of the mags years back of a California Kid style bug. I have always thought it would be cool to build it.

That is awesome Jim. I have enjoyed my time with my VW's at street rod shows more than vw shows for the last 10 years here on the East Coast. Real 15" Halibrands with the suspension work done to run them would be the direction I would go. I would build that car in a heartbeat!

There was some design sketches in Volksworld a while ago of Mike Pye's Oval project- I recall them having a very similar style to them- right down to the one off t-bars! I thought then it would be really nice to see it built! I say go for it! I haven't got a scanner or I would upload some for you- Maybe you can ask Ivan nicely if he frequents these boards??

That's a great idea, Jim! I just love the So-Cal paint scheme, so why not apply it to a cal looker with a traditional hot rod twist.
BTW I definitely prefer something like this over the I-beam equipped Volksrods... VWs are VWs and Fords are Fords – and I love both of em. But blurring the lines in terms of blending various influences is cool. Go for it!  Cool

Jim, I like it except for the wheel tuck.  Keep the rear at stock height or just slightly lowered, and keep the front beam stock width so the wheels don't tuck, and lowered.

Mike, the drawing is not how I described the car to the artist. I want the traditional Cal-Look stance, not tucked or narrowed. I think you guys will dig it. The wheels are the SO-CAL knock-offs that are copies of the Halibrand knock-off wheels. Tough not to go with BRMs, but that will have to be another car. Thanks Jim

Those wheels are a copy- not quite spot on. These are the SO-CAL true knock-off wheels- NO-LUGS!

Dig the Knock Off Wheels Jim...

I can see 'em on a VW-- no problem.

I'll have to stop by the store next time I'm in the neighborhood..
