Dellorto 36 drla carbs, whats the word on the streets?

anybody use these carbs on an 1835? how about parts availability? im thinking about putting a set on a ghia for my daughter but have never had any experience with them, good or bad.

I've installed 36 Dell's on many VW's over the years with great success... Most recently on a mild 2176cc. The only problem (besides parts) is the dreaded mid-range whistle.

I used to run the thick rubber "anti whistle" base gaskets... not sure if they're around anymore.

Awsome carb! I never liked the rubber anti whistle gaskets, because you could never get the bolts tight. You can fill in the area that whistles on the base of the carb with silicone, though. Good luck getting parts!

I didn't know that you can cure the whistle! I didn't know that other people have that issue too. What is the source of this sound?
Apart from that - excellent street carbs. They're almost maintenance free.

Maybe you could block the port with some sort of epoxy... not sure, never really felt good about it, so I always opted for the rubber gaskets.

You have to use caution not to over tighten and warp the carb base.

Silicone may not work for long... gas eats it.

Off idle through mid-range sound only... otherwise a very smooth running carburetor.

(Remember-- parts are hard to find and expen$ive)

Parts are that tough to find. CB Performance still has all the jets you need. They are my absolute favorite carb and I have owned many sets.

They are perfect even for small 1600 stock engine. In Europe we get most parts from Alfa1750 on Ebay or from Dellorto UK shop.

After looking at prices for these carbs, most of them missing parts, I could buy a new set of webers and avoid the hassle, I guess you just need to stay away from the HPMX's

I hear ya, Randy. If you ever need and stuff for those, I have two carbs that look like they've never been bolted to anything. They're both different sizes, but if you needed parts... just sayin'.

I am using the 40's on my 2.0 914 powered bug. My complaint is that with this engine set up in my car, adjustment is almost non-existant. Contact Matt Cooper at Euro Carb Ltd in England for help and parts. Very knowledgeable person. Email is sals@dellorto.co.uk CB performasnce really is not too helpful, in my opinion.

Great CARBS!  I have run them on many engines, getting up to 34mpg on a 1776 with a stock cam.  They are smooth all the way through the transition once you have your jetting correct.  The 5 transition ports on DELLORTO's really make them a smooth running carb off idle and through the mid range. I drove one of my cars, a 1966 sedan, from Arizona, through Utah and into Colorado, going from 1100ft to over 11,000ft, never making a jet change and they ran terrific.

You can still get parts and I will use them over any of the new webers any day of the week when building a driver motor. I have a set I will be installing on a mileage motor I am assembling with a long stroke and small bore, near stock cam.  It will be an interesting test of how much mileage I can get out of them.

Its good to see these carbs are getting praise from you all.  I want to run either Dells or Weber 36 IDFs on a 1679 mouse engine,I think my mind is made up to use the drla's now.

Shoot, they`re great carbs for any size motor. I ran 45`s on the 2176 that was in my old 67. Smooooooth.

I meant the 36s were great for small motors. I run every size dellorto, including 40s, 45s on my turbo motor and 48s on my 2110.  I wish I had never sold my 48s...I would buy them back if I could find them.

You guys all say that parts are hard to get?  You just need to know where to look.  Art Thraen and Mark Harney have sources, CB carries some parts, The Alpha dude on eBaY, and other dealers.  For the whistle, you can use JB Weld to plug the port off.  I have run 40's on my 1641, 1776 and 2007....they run like a top.  Almost no maintenance is right!  I love 'em.

I've jetted the Dellorto's once, set them and never messed with them after that. Why would you need to?  Keep the air cleaners clean and the fuel filters clean and you shouldn't have to be screwing with adjustments all the time.

I've ran a set of 36's on my bus on a small motor, the thing ran for ever and smooth. Great carb!
