Fuel Altereds Anyone?

Came across a cool link to share....
http://www.mysterion.net/AAFA/purehell.shtml
Back in the day, Fuel Altereds put on one hell of show with their short wheelbases and big horsepower. Go, blow or put it in the wall... you never knew what was going to happen next.

Cool link, 'Havoc' in the UK has more than a bit of 'Pure Hell' about it.

From Jere Alhadef... I'm thinking this is Ron Lahr's photo.
"This had to be 1965 or '66. I really hadn't even planned on shooting a picture, but I was standing there on the starting line with my friend, Ron Lahr, and we always had these contests as to who could take the best picture. We got into one of our friendly arguments, and Ron said, 'Okay, let's prove it. Let's go ahead and both take a picture of this car, and whoever comes out best will win.' My photo has all the oil and all the flame, but Ron's photo was taken just a split-second later. There's no fire in his, but the oil isn't there, either; you can see the whole crank, you can see the whole motor — and my head is in the bottom-right-hand corner! This won a photo contest in Hot Rod magazine, which paid $75. That was two months' rent at the time: My rent was $37.50 for half of our house in Newport Beach. It's funny now, because a lot of people look at this picture and say, 'Do you have the other one; the one where you can see the crank and everything?' So I never get to forget Ron. He said he thought I was the winner, and I said I thought he was the winner."

Just seen this one from over here at Santa Pod 1971.
The one in the far lane has a Bond Bug shell for a body.

Those things were absolutely nutty to watch in person. You're right, Sarge... you never knew what was gonna happen when they ran.
Vic Hammond’s Cockney Rebel AA/FA was built in 1984. The altered was named after the rock band Cockney Rebel from England. It was part of a short lived English fuel altered revival that occurred in the mid-eighties. The rules called for a 50/50 mix of nitro and alcohol. Hammond ran in the sevens with the Donovan Hemi powered car. Vic later sold the car and the Cockney Rebel is now called the Mob and is raced to this day. Another great link if you're interested in these wild cars:

Thanks for the link, Mark.... looks like those Outlaw guys may have taken some of the "fun" away with the longer wheelbase cars, though. Still, it's cool to see there's some interest out there. I can remember shows at the local SoCal tracks where there would be an eight car AA Fuel Altered field. Side by side racing anybody?

You're right about the shorter wheelbase cars, Sarge. Much more exciting and traditional, for sure. I remember my friend, Robert Miller (the one in the painting photo w/my orange car), first told me about Fuel Altered cars. Told him I'd never seen 'em in person... so off we went to O.C.I.R. WILD! God, I really miss that place. Spent a LOT of time there as a kid.

I think drag racing was way more entertaining back in the late '60's and early '70's. Anglia's, Austins, Willies, Fiat Topolinos, Bantams, Roadsters... not just Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro-Stock like it is today. Sure the cars are faster now, but it's all so "Vanilla." I really miss seeing the weekly shows at OCIR, Lions and Irwindale... those were truly the days.
