Whats all the fuss about.... FUCHS
«
on:
February 12, 2010, 08:59:56 am »
Right then after being a wheel perv through out my vw hobby life, I have only really regreted selling one set of wheels. 4.5 and Deep 6 Fuchs.
But why whats all the fuss about?
14s arnt considered a good wheel choice because i am guessing the tyre choice...
But what is it with the early sets ? Are they more in keeping with the cal look scene due to the age, or is it something else. Prices have shot up and getting a set is getting to be a rather exspensive game.
Looking at rims for my new 67 and i was thinking of Early 7s with 5.5 rims for the front...
Just looking for peoples thoughts on this cold wet friday morning in the uk

the fuchs seem to go with every colour looker you see them on.the early rim has more rounded spokes if you get a set side by side with the later ones.

But now with the SSP and Flat 4 repros being refinnished to near perfect, has this pushed the price up of real sets or just made it easier to get the best look on a budget.
Lets not even talk about the MWS Fuchs i think they are good for one thing !!

You seem to be forgetting the fact that early 911 prices have gone nuts, therefore the wheel prices have gone up accordingly, that and the 911s historic rallying who regularly damage wheels means the demand outways the availability so they fetch a premium price.
Fake wheel = Fake car

But why whats all the fuss about?
i tghink its because thyey are a quality forged wheel , relatively lightweight , a piece of automotive history , and a timeless design .
the problem is ... they look good on any car . (even porsche put a version on the "sport classic" 997 last year , see pic below)
from a pristine stocker , to a barely legal rust bucket , so everybody wants them .
the good thing to come out of this is that there is a far greater demand for them , which makes repops a viable option for the companies willing to produce them .
the 67-only 4.5" are the lightest of the lot , so make an obvious choice for the front . unfortunately the look of them compared to a larger version on the rear appeals to our cousins who run narrowed beams and ass-scraping rears . this pushed the prices up even more .
i think 5.5 and 6 are the best street combo .

I'm not really a fan of the 911 Fuchs just because it will prompt people to say "Hey, you's got one of them Porsche engines in there too?"
I like the chromed 356 rims on early cars, and the 2.0 liter 914 rims, but I'm just not really into the Porsche look as a whole... simply because of the aforementioned reference, lol. Not that I hate Fuchs, by any stretch, just not a huge fan.

It's the design that most complements the shape of any car. Straight lines and soft curves.
Twenty six years ago, I bought my first set out of the trunk of a friend's car. (His car wasn't a Porshce.)
Back then there were lots of vintage or I might say current Porsches on the streets. Think about it, what Porsche owner would gladly sell his alloys to a kid with a VW for $450.00?
The other day, I ran into a neighbor who restores early 911's and 912's. He's looking for period-correct Fuchs Alloys and he mentioned a lot of early Porsche owner/restorers are doing the same. Now there's competition between Porsche owners and Cal-look VW enthusiasts.
That's why you've got the fuss and high prices for original wheels.

Besides the fact that they're forged... the reason that you stated has always done it for me. Ever since I saw my first set on a white brand new '67 white 911, they've always reminded me of Hot Wheels cars that I had back then.

Beetlebug... very interesting concept. Narrowed? COOL, to what width? Also, is that a common tire, up front? I like the way it looks.
Ian, if I ever got a hold of a set of 911 alloys (Fuchs) wheels for my blue car... it would piss off everyone. 'Cause they'd look so far removed from anything that any Cal Look VW has had. It's probably best that I keep my 356 style wheels. But if anyone is willing to donate a set of 5.5" cheap... don't be shy.

Narrowed to 4,5" and the tires are Vredestein Sprint Classics. Old school looks with modern material classified to 135 mph. Full height 155/15 so they will follow the fender quite nicely and also provide enough grip to make use of the disc brakes. AND they are also available in 205/70-15.

I'm not really a fan of the 911 Fuchs just because it will prompt people to say "Hey, you's got one of them Porsche engines in there too?"
That's why I bought a set of JGE center caps without any logos. Somebody, a non-VW person, asked "do you think it's Porsche now as the wheels say Porsche".

VERY VERY cool. Thanks for the explanation, too. How nice to have matching tires in this day and age. Reminds me of how it used to be.
