Broke, busted, cracked, chewed-up, and just not working.

Seems we work real hard in the off-season (that's winter for you Californicators) to have our cars ready for fun during the summer, only to break something and have to wait it out, sometimes putting us out of the game for the season.

Who's car is currently sitting in the garage on these warm, sunny days instead of out burning gas and rubber?  And, for extra credit, who gets cranky when withdrawl starts to set in?

 

My car is sitting with transmission woes, by the way...

Tell me about it , worked a few bug's out over the winter , got a few run's in , broke someting each time , fixed it .
 Now Ive got a leak under high / hot oil presure coz I knocked a push rod tube putting the motor back in 
Out it come's again  Think i'll strip it right down and make it bigger this time 
Best check the money tree at the end of the garden first

Hey Mister! That's just my backup fix. My old faithful convertible is still out there looking shiny and I have been driving the wheels off of it too. I will admit I am jonesing hard for an "outlaw run" in the orange car. I love pulling into the garage pulling the door and waiting to see if the cop car pulls up, feels like I am 12 again.......

I'd been noticing my accelerator pedal getting harder to push lately so I got my highest powered reading glasses, magnifying glass and LED flashlight out for a gander.  The roller on the accelerator pump lever had a nice grove spot worn into it and, upon further inspection, I noticed a matching crater in the pump eccentric.  Scored a new lever from Berg and spent some time with a tiny file on the eccentric... much better!  Don't forget to grease those rollers periodically!

I've been working on my car recently - got it MOT'd and running a month or two ago, but haven't driven it because of lack of funds for the insurance. So I decide to give it a quick paint job, which has turned into more of a job than I expected (replaced the front apron last night!) and with my luck I'll end up getting it on the road for the end of the season...

I'll still take it off the road to put the cage in though, no matter how good the weather is at the time!

I can relate to this post. As I mentioned on my Big Sur trip post, I had 3/4 IDA manifold split on my way home. A few weeks later I got around to pulling it, and its counterpart, 1/2-side off, and sending them up to my buddy up north for mods/welding.

Leave it to me to screw something so simple up.

Few weeks back, when pulling 1/2 side, I dropped the front manifold nut after getting it free from stud. No biggie, I'd fish it out with a cow magnet. Got distracted, forgot about it, didn't touch car for a week or so.... then decide at that time "I should check valve clearance after that big drive... just to see"....go to crank motor over with 30mm box end....CLUNK. Oh F_CK! Yep, motor stops about 30 deg from TDC on # 1. Guess where the lost nut went....

Anyway, obviously, motor had to come out, head had to come off... in my stupid logic/wisdom, I figured "I'm this far... why not settle my curiosity and just take a peek inside".... Carlos DeAlabama came by last weekend and we hefted the thing on the stand, and I pulled it completely down. Aside from retrieving the intake nut... what a waste of time. Motor looks almost NEW inside, after almost 19000 miles. My concern was going to be cam and lifter and lifter bores, but to my relief, all specs out as new. No pitting, no funny wear, nothing. Even cylinder walls look like the car ran filters (and these have 27000 miles on them since new).
so now it's a matter of cleaning things up and screwing the thing back together, as is...I hate making work for myself....

Don't even get me started on this subject!....I've been working (albeit occasionally!) on my 59 for 12 years now and haven't driven any other type of VW in all that time.....the end is in sight though, and I can't wait!!!

Hahaha... cool thread, it seems to decribe 90% of the members and prospects of our club... My own car has been in the garage since February, and I know loads of out other guys are in the same state right now....

It seems like every problem solved spawns a dozen new ones with these cars sometimes!

You raise a very good point there Jamie, with the standards of cars getting ever higher, we get trapped into the "while it's apart I may as well..." mentality. You know how a simple clutch change can escalate...
"While I've got the motor out, I might as well pull the box out too. While the box is out, I might as well repaint the torsion housings and frame horns. That would be easier with the body off, and I might as well paint the whole pan. I might as well just weld in the IRS brackets as well, and I might as well look at how much I need to do to fit a bus box...
While the body is off I might as well replace those rotten bits I've been patching for the last couple of MOTs, and while I'm throwing some paint about, I might as well dechrome the car, and as I need the interior out to paint it I might as well replace the headliner seats and carpet..."

cant you just change the pushrods tubes for now and run it to the  summer is over then we can go off cruising

plus i can run a decent number soon and you can play catch up next spring after you have tinkered and chucked that heavy interior out

Great post, I thought it was just me who takes things to extremes
I'm sick of my mother in law asking why I'm taking things apart. It boils my piss but ultimately shes right. I'm delving for no apparent reason.
The bug ticks over like a stocker and runs 12s. LEAVE IT
It will need a valve job at 12,000 miles so it will last at least another 5 years
