Mark, if you don't paint the 67 sandbiege, I'm painting my squareback that color, that is gorgeous
Safe to assume that we most likely won't use that color... I'd be stoked to see one of our cars that color... GO FOR IT.

Thanks Fredy, I prefer this paint over Powdercoat, I think it looks and lays better.

Hello All, Just wanted to clarify that the picture I posted of the painted pan is that of my 1962 not of the 67 we are currently working on, The pan as been stripped and is being prepared for paint. We will post some pictures when we are done, but should come out just as nice as the last one
Sorry for the mix up!
Bob.

Imron was nice stuff, I used it on a stake body truck about 13 years ago. Supposed to be very tough and chip resistant. Has it held up well on the other pan?

Every pan that I've seen shot with Imron has fared rather well.

You should write thrillers, dude, when can we who need to decide a colour for own project breathe again?
and the lack of rust-repair photos will drive your average European VW-guy drinking..

Hey Bob, I hear your quite the body and fender man, talked to Mark at the last Bugs for Breakfast and spoke very highly of you and your talent. Looking forward to seeing the progress of your 67'. Also would like to invite you to the next bug for breakfast. It's a good group of VW guy's, talking old times and new, and good food. Ask Mark about it, hope to see ya on the next one if you can make it. Keep the pics and updates coming, when ya can.

We finally got free time to work on the '67.
After taking my Bug to Cars & Coffee... we went to the shop.
Bob spent a lot of time removing the 43 year old factory installed sound board. I like this '67 stamp from VW.
Surprisingly, the pan is really good condition... only found four tiny holes just in front of the battery. Easily repaired.
Bob... making sure that the pan is solid. So far, so good. He really scored a great car that's all original with very little rust.
Next, we're taking the front end to a local shop to get adjusters and 2½" disc brake drop spindles installed. Then, the transmission will be taken over to Rancho so Mike H. can perform his magic on it. Stay tuned.

Another Saturday morning of Cars & Coffee then off to the shop, today. In this installment, we're extremely stoked! Why, you may ask? Well... although Bob scored a killer deal on this 49 State (no undercoat) dry '67, there was one problem with it; the fuel line was packed solid with rock hard varnish (car sat for 15 yrs. with solidified gasoline/varnish). Even though the car ran fine when Bob brought it home, the previous owner decided to run rubber fuel line INSIDE the car alongside the tunnel. WOW.
So, being the perfectionist that Bob is, he made the decision to take apart the pan and do this the correct way... remove the factory fuel (copper/steel?) line and replace it with stainless steel.
Here, we have the center wishbone removed, thus exposing the wonderful inner-workings that the engineers made us in Wolfsburg. (this shot from Bob's phone)
Another angle of the same.
And one more.
After the new stainless steel (slightly bigger inner diameter) line was cut & radius bent, it was tacked back into the pan tunnel and reinforced onto it's brackets. The shift linkage also received a tune up, a new bearing (or bushing... whatever it's called), and the clutch tube got some love and extra tack welds. The front portion of the new fuel line can be seen in this shot. Keep in mind that the pan is inverted.
A comparison of the factory and new fuel lines, such as they are.
The view of the rear portion of the newly installed fuel line. New grommets were added front & rear, where the line exits the pan.
The center wishbone section is now welded back in it's proper place rather nicely and ready for the welds to be ground down.

Nice work guys, much better than the rust repairs we have to do here. My 1970 pan in my spares shed not only needed pan halves but also a frame head bottom plate and even some patching on the top of the framehead! And when you get started on the body I bet you'll just make us all sick...

Hi Ted, No this is just a hobby or a sickness depends on who you talk too. We are working on the car at a place called Sun Motors in Bellflower, Ca. John Sun is the owner and the true master here. He's helping with all the tuff stuff, I'm trying to finish the car for the Classic in June, Not sure if we can make it given the time frame but we're do the best we can, I can only work on the car Fridays and Saturdays, and John fills in the other day's. I think we've made good progress so far, mainly cause this car has no rust anywhere on the body, only 4 very small 1/8 holes in the battery tray area. We did eat up some time replacing the fuel line but had no choice, we had to do it right. By the way, Thank you for the invitation to Bugs for Breakfast!!! I will certainly take you up on that.
Bob.
