Sorry guys really need help  The bug I intend to drive to EBI has gone nuts on me, she was happily sitting at around 850-900 on tick over, but then after a week she suddenly decided that 1500 was her happy place and sat at idle, I couldnt think what to do as I was on my way some where so I gave the lickage more throttle cable to bring the idle down. I am going to check the timing tonight but is there anything else I can check on a pair of 48 IDFs...? |

check all linkage nuts and bolts/hex screws. Sounds like something cam loose!  |

Spray alittle W-D40 around base of manifold while running and see if idle jumps up, if so ya might have a intake leak.

Leaking manifolds/gaskets will do that, we used the WD-40 trick over the years and it works.

i soaked the gaskets in grease if that's what you mean.
You spray WD40 or start gas around the the base of intakes while the engine is running and if you have a leak you will instantly notice a jump in the rpms. |

The trick he talks of is to find intake leaks... spray WD-40 around the base of the intake... it the engine revs up when you do this. Take the intake of and fix the leak.
I usually use a Engine Start Aerosol to look for leaks, works the same way.

You can also spray WD down the throat also...Idle will jump up if theres a leak

I don't think it matters what kind of liquid you spray. You can even use water.
The idea is that the liquid momentarily plugs the leak.

I'm not real comfortable using highly volatile sprays like ether or brake clean. Besides the obvious fire risk, the intake can pick up the vapors and fool you. On some engines I even used propane to find leaks. But I prefer to use an ultrasonic leak detector (Snap-On) or my favorite, a mechanics stethoscope with a piece of hose as a probe. Which by the way is really good at detecting bad idler pulley/belt tensioner bearings, on pass. cars. Works when holding a long screwdriver to your mastoid bone isn't practical. Oh' almost forgot...verify your ignition timing is correct and stable  |
