no your hurst  shifter  should  be complete  and bolt  straight  in  nothing   extra needed.......you MUST  pull the TRIGGER  UP  for reverse..Try to find some pics of one on www.thesamba.com  sounds like  it might be missing  the  reverse  "lock out"  rod  & plates......GOOD LUCK..!!!

there is indeed no need for a spring

and if you look at the bottom of your shifter, the ball should bump against the housing and when you pull the trigger it lifts over it and is able to lock into reverse. i think i had the same thing because i had no baseplate (you don't really need it...) but you need to put it in the right spot. all gears should shift smoothly, i think you have some trouble shifting in third and fourth...

if i can help i have 2 hurst shifters myself

Heres a few picture  its all I could Find on Samba LOL  the lock out is the crossbar and has a thin wire type spring that pushes it down so when you pull up on the ring it let's the shifter go over and in to reverse hope this Helps  P.S. if you shifter is missing these Parts Just But a Cheap EMPI or Johnny's shifter and use it for parts.. Also the Top Picture shows the Thin wire Spring that pushes the reverse lock out plate down it a little hard to see..

That "floating" cross piece with the thin "W" shaped spring is the 3-4 lock out.  The reverse lock out is part of the shifter base.  You can just barely see it through the square hole that the ball is sticking out of.

now i see what was missing with my shifter:
the lowest plate with the hole in it is missing on mine,
i copied the original style with steel bars and it now works fine Smiley
i just made an L-shape where the shifter rides against when jou are in 1st or second gear;
if you pull the handle for reverse, you pull the small disk over the L-shape so you can shift in reverse.
now that the plate is well positioned i can weld the plate to the base
easy Smiley

cheers, Peter
