so whats your take ?

ii saw this post on facebook "built not bought". while i have the love for classic vw's and other cars, i am by no means a mechanical genius, i can change a tire, lay brake line, and do some other mundane tasks. and before you say take a class, this is the first time i have been without two jobs in a long time and building this size motor im having a friend build it as i want it all to work properly. now when the car is done its all my vision and id in no way not give credit where credit is due, so im just looking for thoughts opinions and such  and im gonna look into an automotive class but i understand they are always pretty full

trust me...their are plenty of people buying and not building...the ones saying that my hats off to them...but the majority of them are buying...and these days it is harder and more expensive to do a restoration...or building a race car...you can build your own car using the various talented shops out there....and there are plenty of them...so...buy, build, race away...

I've had to build my own stuff (engines is as far as it goes for me, aside from small-scale projects, like wiring up gauges, etc) due to economic necessity, but after spending two years building a 2.0 liter only to have to start over from scratch, I have a bit more of an understanding why people would employ the luxury of paying somebody else to build their project.  If a guy likes to tinker, wrench, experiement and all that stuff, and I mean REALLY likes it, hats off to the guys that can build their own machinery.  I enjoy it until it turns into a financial impediment and point of frustration, which is kind of where I'm at now.  Whatever it takes to keep it fun, I say go for it...

Everyone pays someone for something, be it cars, or plumbing, or construction, or, or, or. I haven't been doing the finishing work on my car, and I have to say I kinda don't miss it. I'll have it back this weekend though, can't wait

I do admit I'm guilty for preferring to read about cars where the owners are involved with its construction to some degree, versus a story in the magazines where it basically reflects what a particular shop or professional builder did.  No offense to the builders, I just like to see cars where the owners are involved with at least a portion of the build.  I certainly understand, as I said before, how much more sense it makes to pay a pro to do things one is not capable/comfortable doing, for sure.

ive had jokes about me bought not built  in the past ,to be honest i bought an old rolling shell with a cage in it then between me and a few freinds ran new brakes through it made a new loom fitted fuel tank/lines ,gearbox etc etc now im not a mechanic im a cabinet maker
by trade so its all new to me but i have loved every minute of learning how the cars go together  and now can remove/replace gearbox /engine /brakes etc.
ive made a few other small mods on my own .i wouldnt touch the inside of a gearbox or motor as this is a completly different thing to boltiing a few this together but i hope in 5 or ten years to be able to strip and build my own engines who knows 
anyhow ive had fun learning and raceing it and will continue to do so  make your own mind up whether its built or bought
i dont mind  ill see you on the start line

My take,I have built a few cars,worked on alot more but even on my cabrio which I have had for nearly 20 years now there are some jobs that I left to others/payed for.
Well actually only the gearbox and the roof,but beacause I can spend my time better elsewhere I leave things to others that have those particular skills.Even the tools required for a specialist job make it unrealistic cost wise to most people,why waste money?

People all have different skills and skill levels,dont be beating on someone because they are better at say,building cabinets to use dannys example,my only problem with it is, when someone buys a "done" car them claims it as there own,reading features on cars that you know was built by "x" but person "y" claims its all their work is really pathetic, Give credit where credit is due

But anything from facebook is worthless anyway

lol...i think you did...and so did everybody else...going back to using the talent that is out there use it and build yourself a car..it can still have your tastes or likes built into it...
