A friend got a (looks like vintage) basket case of a motor and wants to build it back up. It came with Dell 40's, 94 cimas, CB044 semi-hemi cut heads yet the bottom end looks stock. The short block is together still. Looks like maybe a rebuild that was abandoned in progress. Can I pull the oil pump to see what cam is in there, or is it easier to mock it up and start measuring, thanks!    |

I'd pull the oil pump first, then if there's nothing there, break out the dial indicator!Good luck!

Thanks! He wants a budget build, sweep the floor and slap it together as best we can for low bucks (buggy guy). If it's a stock cam still in there I was thinking of adding some chinese 1.4 ratio rockers and call it a day. Good enough, or should I tell him the stock cam has to go?    |

Stock cam and 1.4s is about the best you can get under 4000. Other cams will match it or maybe, perhaps be 1 or 2 hp better, but if the bottom end is good then it's not worth splitting it for for the money I don't rekn.Good heads and it will pull a sailor off your sister to 5000.
Superstocker stuff, great for offroad grunt, he'll be happy.

haha thanks! I've only seen pics so far, but it's a bit of a head scratcher. There's no oil pump on it (why?) so we can see the cam and it says 4062 which is the classic Bugpack equivalent of a 110 which is cool! But since it's a short block we can see there is no counterweights on the crank and only 4 dowels (no flywheel). Should go together and run fine I think. |

Has anyone put together a motor recently with those old semi-hemi cut Berg style heads? What deck you running and how did the engine like your setup. I remember years ago, my builder was wondering what to do with them and suggested some dome pistons which would be awesome. |

Contact Joel Mohr-he runs them with lots of compression not the lower compression that they were originally marketed for VWs.http://www.mohrprf.com/ |

Thanks! There's only one way to get higher compression from those heads    |

Ive got a pair of semi-hemi heads under my bench too. Still on stock cylinder size so could possibly lose some of the dish if I took them out to 94mm.I seem to remember the motor ran well but hot. It's been a while...

Yes mine ran hot too. I'm wondering what kind of CR I can expect with as small a deck as possible. I'm not sure if these are ported? Take a look at the pic and see what you think.
It came with bolt together rocker shafts, but stock looking rockers with stock adjusters.

Can anyone give me a guesstimate of the volume of the semi hemi 94mm chambers shown above please? The barrels need trimming down and I wanted to ballpark a CR using zero deck. Thanks! |

Aw cmon, the new augmented reality app on the iPhone can give dimensions of an object  from a pic so why not volume? My bro in law said they look heavily flycut.
