The feb 1975 Hot VW photo session..........

....nice cars, a lot of good promotion, lot's of insight........We all admire it......But behind the curtion there are allways good stories lurking!!!!
- What did the (fullerton?) finest think about doing the messure of the headlight hight and not give out a ticket?
- Did the police get there just for the photosessiom and the cars came and left before/after?
- Did someone get a ticket while riding to or from the photosessions, any racing/going sideways while taking off?
- There is allways an elder person showing up and holdig things up telling stories about how they put a Porsche motor in the car they had 20 years ago and it did actually a wheelie while leaving a stopligh. You know the feeling of being forced to politly answer questions but lack of time and interest is evident and you try to not show that.
- Was there any disscusions in the office regarding the judgement of showing these cars, there unresponsible owners that street raced and kept at record of who was fastest? I bet they were knowen to even have partys going out of hand from time to time!!
- We all know where Orange County is due to the fact that it was
not
choosen as the name for the look, instead the more recogniced California Look became norm. If the name Orange County look would have been choosen, how would that have effected history?
Give us poor fellows that was not there the insight on what happend at the session!!

Not to hijack the thread, but how about any of the other famous car shoots? What is the weirdest, worst, funniest thing to happen on a photo shoot.

It's a cool cover shot, but a more meaningful pic, considering the HP movement might've been the white car transfering weight HARD onto rear tires across an intersection just in sight of a hidden black and white. Lined up against some asthmatic 70's gas pig Detroit "muscle" car.
so what if headlights are too low. Those tickets were a breeze. It was the exhibition of speed and racing tickets that amazed most innocent bystanders.

there are a couple of classic photos in vw trends of "The southern California Volkswagen Council's First Annual Bug Bash", this included the following clubs:
SDSK (San Diego Strasse Kafers)
DKK (Der Kleiner Kampfwagens)
California Volksmasters
Volkswagen Unlimited of Ventura County
DVB (Der Volks Bruckenaufbau)
DVW (Der Volks Wahl)
DSSK (Der Strand Steudten Kafers)
DVL (Der Volkssturm Luftwaffe)
but where are DKP??
The event was held in between bug-in #25 and #26. Council meets every Tuesday night at J & B Enterprises.
Here is the cover pic, will post a few more when i get home.

Bug-In 25 took place in October 1980. DKP was not active back then, as the 2nd generation of the club (formed around 1976-77) ceased to exist in 1979. As a side note, a few members/cars from DKK (listed above) later became involved with the 3rd generation of DKP.

Sorry for the delay, I only just saw this posting this morning..... The actual location for the famous 'Feb '75 cover shot was on Mendoza Drive, in Costa Mesa (right off Baker Street). Which is just down the block for the old Hot VWs office(s). Jere Alhadeff picked the spot because the lighting was right (shot in early December '74), and it was a clean background (I guess it looked like a street scene?). Anyway, the officer came from the Costa Mesa P.D., which was asked to be in the photo by HVWs' Linda Dill (who knew several of the Costa Mesa police at the time). I don't think he knew much about the headlight height deal, but he sure played the role of a movie star, according to Linda. He stopped traffic, used his bull horn to move cars, you get the picture. A little side note about Jim Holmes' shirt. At the time, it was very cool to have your girl friend hand-embroider your denim long-sleeve shirt. Darrell Vittone had very cool one, as did Greg, Ron and Jere.
There was some talk about naming this whole deal the Orange County Look, but clearer thinking figured out that there were lowered/fast VWs in L.A. as well. So, it was enlarged to California... but not "Cal Look" until years later by the advertisers. I never really liked that form of the title. I recently found the original artwork done by Lane Evans, and we also have the original line drawing of the side profile done by Burly Burlie, and tuned up by Lane.
Finally, when we redid the police cover shot with Scott Bakken, some years ago, we went back to the same exact spot, same time of day, same month, and asked another Costa Mesa P.D. to do the honors. By the way, the officer who did the original cover in '75, retired from the P.D. soon there after, and went looking for Noah's Ark... Yeah, the real one! Quite an interesting guy, when you get past the ego.
