We can't force ya to have fun

« on: February 23, 2008, 19:41:03 pm »

We were talking about Dick Dale and Surf Music in the Tunes thread. I thought it would be fun to share some recommendations. Try to include website links were available.

NOTE: First person to suggest The Beach Boys will be thrashed severely!

Let's start with Orange, California's own The Dynotones. These guys are one of my favs. "Modified" is a great song to start the day with. http://www.myspace.com/dynotones
On March 16th their playing at Pomona Harley Davidson... anyone wanna go?

The Stingrays.. Out of San Clemente, CA these guys were barely old enough to shave when their first album came out in 2000. I haven't heard  anything from them recently though.  http://www.myspace.com/thestingrayssurfband

The Retroliners. Surf Musics out of Jersey??? You better believe it! They do a great instrumental cover of Nirvana's "Lithium" http://www.retroliners.com/

Last one.

The Blue Hawaiians... surf and exotica music. Legend has it that Quentin Taratino was a regular at LAs Lava Lounge where The Blue Hawaiians were the house band, inspiring him to include Miserlou in his film "Pulp Fiction." They have a few songs with vocals that kinda suck but all their instrumental stuff is great. http://www.pascalrecords.com/b_bluehawaiians.html

Also check out Reverb Central http://www.reverbcentral.com/ for all things surf music.

One of my favorites were The Lively Ones  http://www.thelivelyones.com/  I had all their albums and a cheesy portable record player to spin them on in my bedroom.  I can still hear my dad..."Turn it DOWN!!!"  Roll Eyes Grin

Rick, thanks for the recommendations. I will check those bands out. I started listening to Southern Culture on the Skids recently and I like them. They are probably considered more rockabilly than surf music, but are good nonetheless.

Too many good surf bands out there. Agent Orange, (play a lotta punk, but they know surf tunes) The Torquays, The Eliminators, The Aquabats. A few more that I need to remember.
