Just a quick post with regardes to the vents on a 67 cab declid are they the same size as those found on a 70's one and in the same possition as that of a 66 as i intend to cut some into my lid but obviously dont want them to look out of place. Many thank Alex

I believe they have the same size and position. Could somebody (Fabs?) post a scan of the How To article Hot VWs did a few years back?

The vents on a 67 vert lid are the same as 68 to 71 bettle 2 vent lids here is a picture of a deck lid to see the vent location Check oUt this website http://www.sandiegovwparts.com/gallery.htm

I was intending to fix the vents slightly differently by puting them in individually rather than the top of the lid in one piece as to keep the lid strong hope this will work mind.  Alex

Later[68 on] are shorter than the 66/67 cabrio ones but are very hard to tell apart,I have done a couple like you mention,good luch

I'd heard that the Karmann vents are 5mm longer. The way I'm going to do mine is not quite the same as Maxx - I'm going to leave the outside edges of the '67 lid in place, and the hinge support panel on the inside. That way I'll only have to let in the piece with the vents from the top of the lid.

Which is surprising as in pre '67 Cabriolet lids the vents are positioned differently than in those 70's ones.  (BTW, I can sell that '65/'66 'Vert lid if anyone is interested and deliver to Chimay..)

Alex My first try is about something like you ... but the shape of individual vents are completely flat ! So impossible to fix the vents in the deck !     too much deformation during fixing, so we cut in midle ...   After many times work , i will find a another deck with vents for cut in a midle the new deck 70's !   But I'm not a pro for do this work, and mines friends not too ( but they work very well ! ) ...

Also the on the Karmann louvers all the slots are exactly the same length, as opposed to the VW ones that are gradually longer towards the top.

This looks to be getting more complicated all the time dont really want to distort my lid as it is perfect. I may just try find a proper cab one or simply prop the lid open at the bottom think its going to be easeir and as im not the best welder in the world probably the least damaging way thanks agian for all the comments Alex

Local metal wizard Dave Rosenstiel used some Nissan pick-up cowl vents. He cut the deck lid and welded in the vents and metal finished everything on both sides. No bondo at all. They looked great.

thats the best way to do the deck lid but the buttom corners should have been rounded off when cutting the lids, a sharp corner tends to crack the weld down the road. here is a Picture of a 67 lid I made I used a 4 vent lid and deleted one of the center vents so it could not be done like yours since VW never made a three vent Lid I just wanted something Different.

Hey Fred, " it's evolution baby!!! yeah"  Personally I like the licence plate recess, Shubee has nailed the form of it with his attempt, looks pretty factory/german to me. Needles to say it wil look out of place on most VW's but not on a clean shaven early eighties looker. And the louvers are pretty nice to, I wouldent do it, but these are the things that can make a car stand out from the crowd... and whats better than ruffing a few feathers?

Today there are to many cookie cutter cars out there all it takes is Money you go buy a VW add flat 4 BRM's,Sprint Stars,Gas Burners,8 spoke or 5 Spoke Copys, Drop the Front end, Add Gauges ,Built Motor & Trans,Flat 4 Rosewood Wheel, Paint it and your Done. The Cars Done Today are more of a Full Stock Restoration then add the Above. Lets Face it Not everyone in here can Afford a $100K + Rolling Blackout or A Gates Split Window, ECT. That Is Not Saying That The Cars We Can Afford to Build are not Nice. It is nice to want to have something no one else has but that eighter takes alot of Money or alot of you own Ideas and Blood,Sweat and tears to get it Done to me you have alot more Pride in your car When you do it yourself and use your own Ideas when you build a car you should always build it the way you want it not copy something you see in hot VW's Back when I was in DVB with Frenchy they had 37 Members in the Club and there was not One Car the same. just my 2 cents cuz I spent the Rest
