Here is a small movie when Ron Flemming ride against Paul Swayer. Ron Flemming is driving the Pink Panther, and Paul Swayer the Flakey Jake. To bad that the Flakey Jake have a faillure.
Do you mean Paul Schley driving the Flakey Jake car? I see Mark backing (him) up....
Yes, Paul Schley was driving the Flakey Jake car in this one. They got rid of the car's problem quick so that he could make the next pass.

OK, here's the REAL story... The gearbox in the Race Shop Ghia was f•cked (a technical term used by transmission specialists which means 'broken'). Kept jumping out of fourth gear under power and getting notchier by the run. Pull forward into the water to do a burnout. Move trigger-shift lever to the left and back to select second gear and guess what? It wasn't second! Next pass, the box came out of second in the burnout, and selected whatever gear it wanted when I tried to select first on the line. In the end, I didn't have a clue which gear the thing was in, which was why I declared it dead and buried when I coasted to a halt! At the least, the selector forks are bent, broken or loose. At best...
As for the look on Ray Schubert's face when the Ghia lurched backwards – let's just say it read 'Idiot!'. How did I feel? 'Idiot!'

There are a few 'thanks' posts up already and I wasn't sure on which thread to post this but opted on this one. Anyway first off thanks to all those behind the Bug-In in terms of both organisation and sponsorship, you have backed, put together and managed what is in my opinion without a doubt the best VW show in Europe. The 1st European Bug-In was always going to be a hard act to follow but the 2nd European Bug-In was one of those sequels that worked. The effort that went in to addressing some of the issues from 2007 paid off massively and moving forward there's not a whole lot that could be improved as far as I can see. For sure as drag tracks go it's not like a dedicated facility but the opportunity for a bit of 'street' racing is no bad thing and as such I think thanks must also go to the track crew who turned the street into a pretty good track. By the end of the show it had rubbered up and was holding the horsepower for some good passes. Looking at several of the 8th mile times in the final sessions there were a fair few runs which would have worked out at quarter mile '10s' being laid down and a couple of club guys I know of got their personal bests there. The rain on Saturday was a shame and meant that the effort of the crew didn't pay back quite as much as it should have but despite this they got the track working well.
In terms of the attendees I think the show attracted a great bunch of people from all over the planet with some really cool cars and my view is that if you wanted to show someone a slice of the scene at its best there's only one place to point them, Chimay. The atmosphere was amazing and the quality of the VWs throughout the show was as good as you'll ever see. At an individual level and a club level the turnout throughout was really quite something as was that of the Gasser Garage. Whether you're trying to get a car, a club or a bunch of cars to a show the effort required can be a challenge and I'm pretty sure Russ had a bunch of stuff to work through but respect for doing that and bringing some cool cars out to play. I thought it was fitting that 'Der Express' took the Gasser award as it's maybe on the face of it not the most 'esteemed' car in the collection or at the track but it is quietly a real gem. It was run almost exactly as it did back in the day and more than 30 years on ran like clockwork. In terms of the paint and the overall appearance it wears its age but when you're the real deal that's no bad thing.
In terms of a highlight it is hard to pick just one thing out but I guess ultimately what makes a show is the people so I'd have to say it was probably generally getting to hang out with and talk to so many like minded people throughout the weekend. If I had to nail it down it to one thing though I'd probably have to pick talking to the Schleys, I couldn't imagine a more normal conversation about such amazing times. Seeing Paul reunited with and then hammer out a pass in the Dyno Soar was not something you get to see every day which is a shame because it was quite a moment. Car wise I think I got my biggest grin from Der Express but there were many cars that left an impression, the Dyno Soar of course but then a whole bunch of others including Rolands perfect '68. I could go on about the show for a while but have other stuff to do. EBI 2, thanks!
(I do have some photos but they're still being developed).
