I've got a late 50's girls bike and Bill has a matching pair (girls / boys) of 20" stingrays that are pristine. I'll get some pics.

Too many albums for me to dig through and scan. But I enjoy restoring old Scwhinn bikes for me and mostly customers. I've been doing that since the late '70s. I was lucky and became Schwinn trained (at their So Cal training facility) during that time, because I worked at two local Schwinn dealers. Great memories.

I remember going to the schwinn dealer in Tustin and drooling  - 1971,72  - never have seen the mono shock schwinn till now - way ahead of it's time. Thanks for sharing

I got an Orange Krate for Christmas in 1968 (I think). Super cool bike, but the knucklehead tinker with everything kid that I was, within a year or two I had re-painted it, screwed with it beyond belief and ended up building it into a Chopper three wheeler... the bike turned out cool but I wish I would have left it alone and kept it.

To this day, I'm still half looking for the just right, un-restored, early five speed Orange Krate to replace the one I had.

it was originally red metalflake...

i'm going to paint it grey, and recover the seat...

Beetletom, that bike looks to be either a Murray or Huffy. I'm going to guess the former and not the latter. Probably from the early to mid '60s. But it's rather hard to tell without seeing the factory color and badging.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos handy, but have one somewhere I'll dig up.  When I was in the 5th grade if memory serves me I received a new Schwinn Black Phantom for Christmas.  As most of you probably know this was the Caddy of bikes in the day and I think the cost was close to $100 back then.

It was a great bike, but heavy due to all of the accessories.  Shortly after getting it some of the guys were changing the handle bars with either a goose neck (about 12" inch riser) or a pair of riser bars.  Some guys actually did the combo!! Shocked Shocked  I enden up with the goose neck which my Dad commented that I was nuts!!!!  Anyway I looked cool riding it, or so I thought.  I kept my bikes clean and waxed like my cars.  Even had a sheet to cover the bike in the garage.

About 1960 or '61 Schwinn introuduced the Continental 10 speed and the Varsity 8 speed.  Pricing as I remember was $89.95 for the Continental and $69.95 or $79.95 for the Varsity.  Back then $10 or $20 was BIG MONEY.  As soon as I saw these I knew I had to have one and rapidly lost interest in the Phantom.

The local store in Anaheim was Weiser's Sporting goods that at that time was in a 100 year old building.  Almost everyday after school I'd go down there and walk to the back of the store on the wooden floors and there they were.  Probably a dozen of the two models ready to be purchased.  It had to be the Continental for me as who wanted a crummy 8 speed.  There were four colors all in a candy finsih, gold, blue, red and green.  My choice was gold and possibly that was the beginning of the Butternutt color on my '63 sedan. I started saving my lunch money and I had a weekely paper route that I shared with Mike Mahaffey (yes that Mahaffey).  Close to Christmas I had about $40 saved and my parents funded the balance for my Christmas gift.  Now I had two of the coolest bikes on the planet.  Soon I was changing derailers and gear combos and that was my ride until I was able to drive.

Once I obtained my driver's license the interest on the bikes faded rapidly.  My Dad had a friend that had grandkids that were looking for bikes.  We sold them for about $20 each and they were still PERFECT.  Some years later it hit me that I wish I still had them.

I've looked on e-bay over the years for one of the original Continentals, but have never found one.  They were unique in that the front derailer was a lever on the upright for that moved side to side.  The rear changer was further up the angle fork.  By the second or third year of production this was all changed.

Today I see that original Phantoms sell for well over $1000 and who knows what the original Continental would bring??? Cry Cry Cry Cry

John, bummer that the bikes are gone... but cool memories, I'm sure. My childhood friend, Jim, fully restored his Phantom back in the early '90s. The cool thing is... he actually brings it to his P.C.A. and S.C.C.A. races and rides it. He's had some pretty amazing offers for it, but hasn't sold it yet. I've seen those bikes command anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. Depending on their condition and authenticity, of course.

They are the probably the most sought after balloon tire/heavy-weight (26" wheels) Schwinn bikes. The Sting-Ray series (20" wheels) are up there, too.

If you like restored cruisers check out the Simonian Farms store on Clovis ave. Clovis, Calif. (near Fresno) You won't be disappointed.   

Ok... you don't believe me.   Check this out, even President Bill Clinton toured this place.

Not enough? how about a dozen restored vintage tractors displayed on 10 ft. pilings, or an original Mack Bulldog dump truck or an original steam
shovel? or a restored Whizzer?

Ok.. don't go! Your loss not mine!.........Just kidding....They've also got really good fruit, veggies and tasty bits for sale too.  Smiley Smiley
