In the last issue from "Super VW Magazine",there is a story about Ron Fleming.Included are lot old of foto's from way back.
There is a picture ,that I found interesting(big bumper bug).It's (was) Mike Johnson's '69 Bug.He was also a DKP-member.
What I like to know now is,what color was it,what engine and especialy those back-wheels!!!Are these Chromed-Steelies,what size and are they home-made back then?
So DKP-Loungers surprise with some info, and "FAB",dig in your ARCHIVES for some foto's!!! Grin Grin Wink

I'm thinking Mike Johnston's car was a 1968 model, not a '69.  It was RED and he kept it VERY clean back in the day.  Mike is currently building a 1961 bug that will be red also and hopes to re-join the scene one of these days.  A shot of Mike at Bug-In33.

Love that picture, Keith. What a trippy looking exhaust, too.

Sarge, what's the history on that license plate frame? My eyes are old and I can't really read it, but looks like an old Anaheim VW dealership or repair garage, yes?

Very cool, nonetheless. I love old VW frames.

VERY cool, Keith. Thanks for the history lesson. I'm guessing that was a VW dealership?

God, a white exhaust is already a pain to keep clean, but a white one...

Where did that idea come from anyway?

Back in the sixties when I was a wee Lad, I can remember white headers on almost all of the V8 racecars... Of course, back in '72 what did I do on my first VW? Paint the header white, then later powder blue... for a while. It ended up black to match all the oil streaks from my cracked "H" case  Wink

Somewhere inside that pipe is a glasspack, so I'm goin' with glasspacky.  Anyone else notice the nice shade of grey inside the pipe? Cool  Schneider Motors was never a "dealer", just a repair shop that specialized in German cars... primarily BMW and Mercedes.  I think they felt sorry for us VW's Wink Grin  I'd pay to get one of those license frames!

Back on topic:

Mike's license plate was very close to Sarge's on his red '67. Sorry, but I possess an astute flair for the obvious.

Well... yeah, back in the '60s, it was. Also my nickname when I worked in the bicycle business in the '70s and also when I was racing BMX up until 1980.

One of the managers at the Bellflower Schwinn shop named me that when I was in high school.

So, when is Mike J. gonna get on this thread?

Hey Sarge,it's me again. ;DYou have said that Mike hopes to re-join the scene. Now,I have a question:if an old member(DKP1)who is OUT of the scene and wants to re-join,is he automaticly member of DKP3?(so is that membership for life?)
I see,you have still contact with him.I hope you can convince him,so he can
do his talk right here on the LOUNGE! Wink Wink
Thx,Peter

For an ex-member to get "grandfathered" back into DKP requires a car that meets club standards.  Doug Mische, Don Brown (both DKP II) and myself are the only ones to do this so far.  Mike Mahaffey and Mike Johnston are working on cars and Mike Hunsaker has gotten back into the scene with a drag car.
