I think that most of us have used an Engle cam at some point or other but I never really gave any thought to who Engle the man was - I think we all owe him a little quiet thank you today.

Sad as always when good people, who did a lot to moto sport, pass a way.
Engle cams are good and oldschool so it make the loss much bigger. Good is that He will be rememberd cuz His camshafts and pice of Him will be in each of our cars.
R.I.P. Mr. Engle.

weren't some of the VW grinds copied from Yamaha motorbike grinds or something like that?

Sad.
But, like most of us, we'll always enjoy what he brought to the Cal Look scene... some great cams. Engle was the only cam I ever used on my personal and customers' engines.
R.I.P. Jack and thanks for everything that you've done for car enthusiasts.

I talked to one of Jack's sons, Doug the other day. It was Doug who got Engle into the VW business, back around 1968. He was in high school auto shop building a Manx buggy as a project. They (the class) took apart a 40hp engine for the first time, and as a joke, took the cam to Engle to show off. They all laughed (two lifters per lobe? What kinda sh*t is that?). So, Jack figured out how to mount the cam in their grinder and reground it for the first Engle 100. The engine like the bigger cam, so other buggy guys asked to have one as well. From there, someone asked for a slightly larger cam, so the 110 and 120 were born. And on it went. So, for Engle, the VW was a joke at first, but no telling how many 100s, 110s and 120s have been ground since then.
