So are Porsche headlight covers on early cars considered passé? Is it cal-look? You used to see them all the time but not anymore.

Just a random thought I had looking back through some old magazines.

They were more of a fade  the problem was if you used porsche lenses with an H4 headight the beam was all over the place because both were fluted but I think they look Bitchen

louisb, there are two version available, the H1 and the H4. Most of the guys I knew ran the H4's I think, and they look nice on the right car. My friend Javier ran them on his very Cal Look 1954 sedan in 1992.
I still prefer the plain, flat glass covers that seemed to be in vogue in the mid 70's-mid 80's
Like Pete's Dragon ran.

The H1 part number is 911 631 111 00 (or Bosch 1 305 614 010)
H4: 911 631 927 00 (Bosch 1 305 614 005)

Yeah, I have heard that you run into the same problems with the Euro style fluted lenses.

You talking about the flat plexi covers?

Louis, I ran the early Euro 911 lenses on my '66. using the H1 first and later... the H4 buckets. Both worked fine for me. I really liked my glass lenses because they didn't have the usual dimples on the top facing portion. They were simply clear. Rayburn probably remembers when I had those on the car.
My childhood friend, Jim, sent 'em to me when he was living in Germany during all of the '80s.

FWIW, H1 parts have become quite spendy, so if anyone has buckets, bezels or the long springy adjustment screws, they are worth good money!

A cheaper way to do redirect the light is to use H4 beams and break out the glass, then the reflected light passes through the 911 lens just like the H1's. I did this on my 54' convertable and my current 64'

I have the Porsche lenses on my 66 chop. I do not have all the light scatter issues everyone is referring to. They are great on low or high beam.\

Yep! A very effective and cheap way to go. I did that to mine after I took out the H1 setup. I've always wanted to experiment & see if using a heat gun or some other method would deactivate the glue/cement that fastens the lens to the H4 reflector. If not... the ol' hammer smash-up way works, as many of us already know.

Louis, if you ended getting the 911 lenses, please post up some pics.

My post was more out of curiosity than anything. I don't even have a car to put them on yet. (Though I am looking at a '66 in Phoenix.) For a while though it seemed like every car had them and then they disappeared off the scene. Personally I tend to lean towards the fluted euro style lenses myself.

I was looking at getting some also, but run the H4's.  The double fluting had me turned off, and not sure if i want to take the hammer to them quite yet.

Damn that thing is nice!  I rella dig those lenses, and don't even care if they're plastic.  I wonder if a glass shop could do it in a clean fashion.   Smiley

I may need some as I keep losing them to stones. I did two within 200 miles of each other a year or so back!  Roll Eyes

getting rid of the 'double fluting' is easy, just cut the lens off the bean unit or fit european reflectors, mine were h4 semi sealed units with the lens cut off Grin

I've got round to liking it quite a bit too. That shot was taken* on the Sunday at Das Drag Day IV and for a bunch of reasons that was pretty much the best day I've had with the car. That's not to say there haven't been a lot of other good times with it but that was an especially good one.

probably not, you won't get a defined beam pattern, just ditch the inner lens, it's not needed with european/porsche lenses, just make sure they are for left hand traffic/right hand drive Grin

That's not a stupid question, at all and actually rather valid. Yes, you CAN. My after I changed my H1 setup out for the H4 bulbs, that exactly what I did... used my original 1966 housings, painted VWheadlight rings, a  pair of smashed out Hella H4 headlights, a new set of bezel o-rings, and I was good to go. Now, I wish that I had that set of H1 headlights... they're worth a fortune, these days. Or so my Porsche friends tell me.
