How do I get a 6 cylinder Porsche VDO tach to work correctly on a 4 cylinder? Can it even be done? Thanks!

Yes, it can be done. Mine was originally from a 6-cyl. too and a specialised company (some 20 years ago...) rebuild it to 4-cyl application.

Today Peter Fett in gemany can do 'anything' with a vw and a porsche gauge: www.fett-electronic.de/

the Peter Fett site looks interesting

I like the look of the 100mm twin sender unit ie the tacho with the built in temp gauge

Why not just get a 914 tach?

Why not just get a 914 tach?

Because the redline is too low and it only maxes out at 7 grand.

there is a 3 step switch inside. if you drill a hole in the back you can put it to 4-6 and 8 cyl. found a instruction on the internet. i did it on my ovn..

Is the 1915 going to see over 7k rpm?

That will probably be absolute max, but I'd like to have a little extra on the dial. The 911S tach will suit the motor perfectly, redline included.

why would you drill hose instead of taking the whole back of the gauge off?

you cant take the back of. if you want to get inthere you need to take the front off and the glass out. to doo that you need to open the front as an tin can.. then you need to send it to vdo to get a new front ring on..

Sorry, but that's not true. It is very easy to simply (but carefully) peal back the rear edge of the trim and remove it, along with the glass. Then you can unscrew the back of the gauge. Refitting means simply bending the edge of the trim back into place. I did all this to repair a speedometer in my Porsche 911.

I bet there is – VDO would almost certainly have used the same internals on gauges for a variety of cars. Interesting to check this out... Smiley
