KDF's are going for about $200,000 and up right now...wonder what the oldest VW in a private collection is worth? $$$$$$$$
Looks like, just the decklid, doors and shell are MAYBE a VW38 but still how cool would that be to own? Cool
I say restore the car to its original state.. as it once was as a prototype IF that is really a VW38. Cool story.

Sorry I love all old cars and think they should be on the road but if it is, there is about as much of a 1938 VW left on that thing as there is Queen's English in the American language of today.  Shocked
Best thing to do is repair the engine lid, hang it on the wall and scrap the rest.
Or are all early VW parts collectors in the world going to unite to make and resurect one car and then go into joint ownership and a car share scheme to halve the traffic queues during rush hour?  Huh Huh

I'm English, but live in Hungary currently.

 I'm constantly seeing cars of all types (including VW's) that have been cobbled together from other cars and have a selection of panels from various years attached.

 It's hard to say what is original on a great deal of these cars any longer and what found it's way on at a later stage.

Truth is over here they never throw anything away that could be bodged onto something and turn a buck on it...

It's true that this is a great find in any case and wouldn't it be fantastic if it did prove to be what we all hope it is?

      We'll have to wait and see.

Scrap! Honestly in my opinion if it was restored (Which would be quite a task if it is such a white elephant) only 1% would be original so it looses all the rareity and kudos, might as well be a wizard roadster. Wink

I read about a dude that built a Lamborgini Diablo... 100% from scratch.. by hand... in his basement.
All hand formed panels. Countless hours of labor.
It's possible if someone's got the desire... Or money....
It is sure quite a find.

Maybe the good panels could be grafted into a little later car just to display the unique features. But, that would mean chopping up a good early car...

It's really sad that it got chopped so much over the years, but I also know that's the only way it survived this long.

That said I would prefer to see anything as significant as this possibly is, being given back to Volkswagen themselves and entrusting them with any restoration work and what would be acceptable to them...

After all they would be able to do all the research far easier and be in the best position to decide on what can be achieved in terms of repairs.

This car possibly being the oldest genuine link to thier heritage should mean they would have a massive interest in being involved.

Is there any restorer out there that would want to be responsible for the Crown Jewels of Volkswagen history being badly repaired....

If I found a potential Van Gogh painting, do you think I would give it to my local picture framers to restore???

Giving it to VW to restore would be the worst fate for this car. Take a look at how bad the early cars in the museum are... In my experience, VW's 'expert' knowledge is seriously lacking.

I'd vote for Trauhott and Christian Grundmann (Hessich-Oldendorf organisers and major-league collectors/restorers). There is no argument that this car, if it proves to be a VW38 (and I believe it is) must be restored one way or the other. Externally, the rear window and windshield surround are the only major problem areas but can hardly be considered insurmountable problems. Beneath that, well, there are plenty of KdF parts available these days (they are no longer the real rarity they used to be) and the end result would be a pretty accurate rebuild/recreation/restoration of a historically very significant car.
