My '56 Oval - None more black
«
on:
June 25, 2009, 17:13:06 PM »
Been semi-lurking on here for ages now watching everyone elses projects, figured it was about time I posted up pics of mine (with a little bit of encouraging from certain parties
).
Here's how I got the car in 2004, a reasonably solid 1956 (November 1955) RHD Oval that was originally a South African CKD car imported over to the UK in about 2003 or thereabouts:
The car has since been stripped and shipped off to the boys at The Paintbox where the body has been acid dipped before having any problem areas fixed with the standard collection of repair panels from the likes of Wolf Parts, Auto Craft Engineering and Hooky's Panel Shop. New floorpan halves have replaced the crusty originals.
It's been to Chris Isaacs Race Cars and now sports a six-point chrome-moly rollcage.
Here's some spy shots of how it's currently looking in paint:
Transmission is a solid-mounted Berg 5-speed along with a Quaife diff. Engine is from Ian Clark at WPS and the planned spec is a 2387cc with 48 IDA's, FK-89 + straight cuts, magneto etc., all the good stuff and a reasonable upgrade over the pokey 1200
.
I think that's covered all of it for now.

Ok, I've dug through my photos so here's quite few more "in betweens" to fill in the gaps:
Here's the car after I'd stripped most of the paint off (Nitromors! It burnses! Burnses us it does!) and covered it up with Halfords rattle-can primer, note those lovely white patches in the rear valance, full of filler
The body went off to
Surface Processing Ltd
to be acid-dipped and coated. The great thing about this is the good bits of the body look brand new, unfortunately it will find and highlight everything wrong too, including a horrible repair to the one rear quarter that I hadn't found when stripping the paint off. You can also see the daylight creeping in through the heater channels.
Meanwhile on the floorpan front, apart from my crusty & botched 'pan halves that had that lovely pop to them when you put your foot in the right/wrong place, the tunnel had gone in some strange places so it that was opened up to find oodles of grease and muck inside. The theory being something must have been rattling around so grease was pumped in there until the rattling stopped
Apart from the grease, there was the trim from my horn push and various units of south african currency (No Krugerrand). Cable conduits that would no longer be needed were removed and everything painted before sealing it back up again. The front mount for the 5-speed was also welded between the frame horns.
On the body, the heater channels needed replacing (you can see from the cutout section how bad they were), lower door pillars, front inner wing, front valance, rear valance (which has been made removable), spare wheel area, rear bumper mounts. Shane also properly re-repaired the rear quarter. As there won't be any heating, the various holes and pipes have been filled in and removed. In order to clear the 5-speed, the rear floor has had a hump added.
They also started to fill in my trim holes
(although I must admit it does look better without it)
Off to
Chris Isaacs Race Cars
for the rollcage where it shared a stable with Pas' Oval for a couple of weeks
I think my only request was that I could still open the glove box, and wind the windows down without needing to open the door first.
After a few more small repairs here and there it's mostly priming and sanding everything down prior to being painted.
Apart from the body which is gloss, the floorpan and rollcage have been painted satin black.
I think that's it, unless I can find any more stashes of photos somewhere.

Saw this one a few weeks ago when I dropped my Oval off at the Paintbox for a makeover. Very nice car indeed.
None more black that is for sure.

The roll cage really rocks in this car. But there are a heap of details going on beyond that. I think he's going to race too. This is going to be really special once it's out and about.
The Paintbox does it again!!

The acid dipping and coating? I'd have to dig through my emails, but I think it was around 1-1.5K, plus a bit to Joe G to trailer it there and back

It would be cheaper to bring the car to the UK to do it! There's not much to see around Dudley though...
I only live a couple of miles away.

Yeah, I guess I am
I haven't driven it for about four years, almost forgotten it's actually a car and not a money pit that sits in a garage somewhere and eats into my bank account.
It should (fingers crossed) be done in the next month or two, that's the plan.
