I have a question about early Riviera wheels (without square sections on spokes) , what was the original paint/polish scheme they came with ? They were available for Porsche 914 ? Mine are sandblasted with polished center and outer rim, I'll maybe paint the spokes with matt grey, or gold would be nice too. Thx !

I cant remember where / who it came from I can... http://www.type-14.com I don't think they were painted. I think the spokes kept the rough texture of the casting mold and only the outer rim was polished... For the manufacturing process of the first series (alu inside, steel rim) Click Here!

Jordy is correct regarding the wheel finish on the first generation Riveras. I don't know if they ever were available as a factory option for 914 cars. But I know that dealers would offer 'em as optional equipment. Always liked the early versions of those wheels. I'd either sandblast the entire wheel and leave them that way, or polish the outer lip and center section. Then, run black lugs and paint all of the small circles (including the lug holes) flat black. The spokes, I'd do with Wurth silver.
Is it me... or is the sixth person from the left Spock from Star Trek? (see Jordy's pic)

I always thought they would look better if the extra "holes" weren't there in between the log holes.

I never liked them. Sorry I think they are ugly. When you can get Fuchs and Gasburners or 2 liter Porsche wheels. Why would you want those. I would rather have stock VW wheels with nipple hubcaps. I will probably get slammed for this, but that is my opinion.

Sorry 'bout that... couldn't resist.

All joking aside, I only prefer the early ones. Especially now because they're just not around like they were 20-40 years back. Seems that most people have the same wheels, these days. But... to each their own. We all have our opinions. Which is a good thing. If all of our cars looked the same, that would be feckless.
Carry on.

I have the early steel/alu ones on my bug. Just because no one else here in Europe runs them... (and because I like them...)

great, now i miss them even more... very nice picture off the fastback, ghia and squareback there Anthony. if you don't mind you may send me a copy off that. they have a paint finish on them that looks similar to the raw colouring. the paint was faded and had them blasted. but to me they look good if the outer rim is polished, the centers as well, but that depends on the car. the spokes were always raw/painted. here are some pics i found on the net off them.

The ones above in the second, close up pic could be hubcaps too. They were also offered as a dealer accessory. Unlike Donny, I've always liked them. I've even got 'em on my '69 however I fully polished them instead of keeping the cast spoke. To each his own. -jeffrey

Fully polished on my old Fastback. I never really cared for them much until I bought this car.

Jeff & Bryan, cool pics. Cars look great with those wheels.
At this year's Bug-In Cruise Night @ Nick's, Metz parked his '69 by us DEEKS and he was telling me that he hadn't polished his Riveras in a long time. I told him they look great just the way they are. I remember when they were fully polished, but to me... they look better now.

Does anyone have a pic of the inner side of the center cap ? I'd like to see how it is mounted on the wheel.

I think the originals had a plastic cap that just snapped in. The spinners or the ISP hex caps like mine mount with a couple of set screws that mount from the inside.

Nico, the car looks really good with the wheels like that. Are the centers painted, media blasted, or raw?

Thanks Mark, the centers are polished like the outer rim, and spokes are blasted. This winter I will make them look cleaner.

I'm pretty picky on how detailed wheels have to be. Don't worry I don't want them fully polished. What I want is to have the spokes blasted again to have a "uniform color" of the casting. As you can see there are some little scratches and marks on it. But I will keep this pattern, with center caps and good looking bolts it will be nice.
