Title: Another '67 joins the fleet!
Post by: Ivan on January 31, 2010, 22:20:33 pm
I owned this car back in '97 as a 25,000 mile from new one owner stocker. It was the best original '67 I'd ever seen. Sadly, I couldn't afford to keep it and my '67, so I had to pass it on. The guy I sold it to took a ride in my '67 shortly after buying the car and... Well, you you now how it is... He wasn't so keen on a stocker by the time we got back!
He got a totally new 2007/45 Dell'Orto FK8 motor built, Kerscher discs, SAW spring plates, KONIs, bla, bla, bla on it. A fresh exterior paintjob. Interior and under the hood/engine bay are OG. And did about 1500 miles in it before parking it in his garage in 1999.
Recently he got back in contact - and I wont go into detail why - but let's just say his circumstances have changed -  to see if I knew anyone who'd be interested in buying it. I asked a few people and then suddenly thought  'What am I doing, I need that car!' I had to sell up a load of cars and parts, and take a loan, but I got the cash together.
I bought it without seeing it since '98 - but as I trusted him I went on his word that it was still really good.
I dragged it out of his garage last Sunday and took it to my friend's workshop - Peter Roberts at Funkenblitz. We 'blitzed' it and re-commisioned it that day. it needed new fuel lines, axles gaiters, a service and the surface rust cleaning off the discs. I also gave the underside a really good detail - and it came up really well.
The car also came with everything he'd taken off, so there's a 25K H series 1493cc motor, beam, decklid, steering wheel and so on.
He told me anything in the garage was mine - so the fully detailed Mahle Gas Burners, new/boxed Porsche pattern front and rear discs and all his tools and roll cab tool boxes are going to come in very handy.
I've got a lot of plans for changes to the car to make it look a bit less gay, but at the moment I'm just detailing everything to get it looking as good as possible.
The interior is truly amazing, it's totally original - from the carpets to the headliner - and looks like a new car. I've spend about an hour trying to find fault with it and there's nothing, not a rip, tear or mark. The only downer, is that it's soon going to click over to 30,000 miles... ;D

After a decade laid-up in a garage it could have been a lot worse than it was. It was back on the road the day after getting it out of the garage and although it was minus 3 degrees and it's got no heating I drove it home feeling warm inside. My feet, hands and head were not so warm though.

I just thought I'd share the story with you guys - enjoy!

That's the one - John built the engine from scratch and dyno'd it at 155bhp. A good driver rather than an e-ticket ride. It sat at 80 smiles per hour all the way home with plenty to go.
Needs couple of inches out of the beam to tuck the wheels in and short axles with fatter rubber - oh, and the Gas Burners.
How's tricks anyway? Happy New Year and pass it on to Paul. XX

Wow, what a great find. I wish I could have come across one of my old lookers. Sold one at Bug-In 22 and I am sure it is no longer around. That was over 3 decades ago.

What a great car you've regained.

It doesn't need that much - just what I've mentioned really. And then it should be just how I want it. My bank account is well into the redline, so much so the last statement had something I've never seen on a statement before - it simply said 'Valve Bounce'!
What's life for is it isn't for living?

Thanks Rick. Long time no see or speak!
The best bit is that the '67 has had I heart transplant since I owned it! :-)

I hope all is well with you. Still staying away from the sugar?

The car looks great, but I would pull those accessory bumper guards off. I've never seen the 4 lug sprint stars detailed like that; i like it. Congrats on getting the old car back. I hope that I never have to part with my beetle.

They are Flat 4 alloy Sprints and not staying as the Gas Burners which were stacked up in the back of the garage will be going on ASAP. They're painted metallic gunmetal gray like Jim Kaforski's and just needed a decade of oxidisation cleaning off them - after four evening's work they're like chrome (for a week). The Sprints will be for sale as soon as the Gas Burners are on. Five wheels - one with slight curb rash. Like new Michelin 145 and 165s. Caps, nuts the whole kaboodle. Cheap.  And, I do mean cheap.

I've got a lot of plans for changes to the car to make it look a bit less gay, ......

Not sure what you're referring to specifically, as it looks pretty nice.  Seems done up nicely.  The wheel and tire combo is different and unique.  Personal taste....  I think it would look sweet with some fuchs and wider rear tires, with some t-bars.   8)

It's got 165s and needs to go up half an inch and have 205/65s. You know, just to look a bit more purposeful.

Nice car Ivan, have to agree though, when I read the feature I always thought it didn't quite sit 'just so', even though it was obviously a great car and well built. Tucking the front wheels a smidge and the bigger section tyres on the back (along with the gas burners) will give it the look it needed from day one.

Sweet!

Does this mean you'll need someone to drive the biege one?  ;) :D  all you have to do is ask hahaha....

What a find........!  Is it Lotus White?

Cant wait to see it on the burners.

I have to agre with others though, apart from the wheels and tyres I'm not sure I'd change much more, my only thought was swap out the white wing beading.

Yes it is Lotus white - and still has the original sticker under the washer bottle behind the spare wheel. The white wing beading won't be going anywhere though - as that is how the car came when new.

Give me a call!
There's quite a lot of '67 only stuff! From memory, I think there are three original  hubcaps and three wheel trims. But I'd need to make certain. There were boxes of stuff and I haven't really had a chance to look at it all yet. One thing that'd be of interest for sure are the original running boards with coloured covers and original trim.

Nicecar.Remember reading the Volksworld feature and thinking how cool it was that the mods had been made to make it a better all round driving car, rather than just a quarter miler.
Look forward to seeing it at sandown next month?

Did you know... I found that one too? I bought it from the original owner who lived in the West Midlands (can't remember the name of the place). It was a really nice car, really nice! I seem to remember it'd had some bodywork. The owner flat denied it though. it wasn't worth arguing about it - the car was still lovely. And I got it for VERY sensible money - I'm not about to upset anyone though so I won't say what it cost. Fred Unis went and collected it and delivered it straight to Luke at Terrys. He went through it and then it was sold on to Mark Walter's (from memory) sister. It was hers when it was featured in the buyers guide.
Although it wouldn't fit in the spare wheel - the original owner had a Hazet (VW) spare wheel tool kit from his previous Beetle - it was mint! He would only sell the tool kit as a separate deal - I got it for 200.

Look after it, there aren't many like that one!

ahh, very interesting, thanks for filling in the gaps :)

yes i bought it from Mark Walters for very reasonable money too, although it has suffered, but is off to my mate Gavin Jones in cornwall in a few weeks for a little surgery here and there....the idea is to get it ready for Stanford Hall, the original plan was the Volksworld show.

Coincidentally, i came across the car at Avoncroft Historic Vw show in about 1999 i guess, it was for sale by an old guy who i got chatting to. He turned out to the Service Manager at the local Worcester dealership and had been given the bug by the original lady owner with only 50k miles on the clock. i spotted it at Brighton Breeze about 4 years later and managed to track the owner down and asked if he ever sold it, would he give me first refusal.....then out of the blue i got an email from Mark asking if i wanted to buy it. :)

i dont plan on selling it, and although i do appreciate cal lookers, i havent got the heart to modify this car :)

anyway sorry for the hijack......again  ;D

whats your email Ivan? and i'll contact you via that about the 67 bits :)

One question, did you repaint the rear inner fenders? And do you plan to protect them in any way and if so, what do you plan to use?

Cool adaptors - but I've got Porsche pattern front and rear discs to go on it - new straight replacements for the four lug VW and Kerscher discs already on the car. They came from CSP and were in the garage with all the other parts.

A much better way to go, and easy on ball joint cars. Personally I have the same setup for my 64 now, but I regret getting lowered spindles as it changes the way the wheels sits in the wheelhouse... and I like the old school :-\

Rob - give me a call on 07739 636740. I'll book you in for an E-ticket ride in my Beige '67. It'll be like you've been living in a dark room and I've turned on the light - once you've adjusted to the shock of the magnitude of reality, you'll be booking an appointment with the bank manager. And, trust me on this one, you'll never look back - well only in the rear view mirror to see how far the car you just whooped is behind you!

Once you've had a ride - I'll let you have a drive. And then you'll need to borrow something from the little black box... ;D

The fact you lurking around on this forum shows you've already started coming around to 'our' way of thinking.

I just had to compare our two 67`s. Mine is zenith blue but apart from the colo(u)r and the spring plate there is not much else that differs;

Yours;

Mine;

It is a real pleasure working on a car like this. Yours got a much better paint than mine since mine is sun damaged, or patinated if you prefer  :) Regarding the gas burners, they should work fine with original 67 length axles.

The decklid is a Sedan 'lid with vents from a later car welded in. I have an NOS Convert decklid that I have had stored away for years - that'll be going on once I get it painted.
Glad you like the way it looks.

Shame we don't live closer together - you could have had the fake lid off this car. But it wouldn't be economical to get it to you.  :(
Still, if you need measurements I can always lay some card over the NOS one and mark it out for you.

Isn't that '70 (at least for Euro models)? Anyway the vents are not the same in shape.

The sedan vents are 5mm shorter, but really you'd never notice once it's on the car.

Not yet, I've got the discs painted up and need to order the studs, then I've got to measure things up and order tyres for the rear. All the wheels are painted and detailed and ready to go. I've got the caps now. Just got to order the lug nuts and, as Tony Soprano would say - Badda-Bing!

Yesterday I drove in the pouring rain down to Funkenblitz to work out what tyres I could run on the Gas Burners I will be fitting. I was not sure what clearances would be like with the Kerscher rear disc set up - would I need spacers? Well thanks to fellow JG54 Greenhearts member, Max Jamieson who had a set of Gas Burners with tyres fitted we were able to fit the  5 x 130 discs to one side and bolt his wheels on. The results could not have been better - I can get a 205/70 tyre on the rear and the front wheels don't foul the callipers, which is a problem Max had with his wheels on his car.
I far prefer the way the car looks on Gas Burners - but it'll look even better when the actual wheels are on as they have been powder coated in metallic grey and will work far better than black against the white paint work.
The other job we did was to remove the wiper motor and mig and reshape the spindles as they had wear and the wipers went floppy on the drive down.
I'd really like to thank Max, Alex Taylor and Pete Roberts  - it was a great day and I came away knowing that I didn't need short axles and what tyre sizes I could run with.

Enjoy the pics.

Don't worry, it's all in hand. The original beam is being reworked by Alex Taylor of Defcon 3 right now. The beam on the car is a Puma beam and is rock-solid. It is going as soon as Alex has done his stuff.

Lower in the front ??? I think even fender to tire clearances, front and rear, look perfect. Don't touch a thing. I wouldn't narrow the beam either; narrowed beams are yesterdays news.

With that said, have fun and do what you wish. The car looks great.

The beam is only going to be slightly narrower to take it all back to where it would be without dropped spindles. I had it done on my other '67 and it looks about ten zillion times better, IMHO. You can over do anything, and when it comes to front beams on a car like this I know what I want. Stay tuned and see if you like the end result... I think you will. ;)

Just got home at 1.20am from driving back from the Funkenblitz workshop - minus 2 with no heating for 40 miles! Still, it was a good evenings work. The front and rear disc brakes were swapped to the new Porsche 5 x 130 discs, the rear end tweaked up a little and then jetting and MSD distributor advance trouble shooting session. We had plenty of laughs and Mars Attacks was on the TV. The car looks a whole lot better now. Thanks to Pete and Dom for giving up their Sunday evening/night.

Hi Rick, the Beige '67 on BRMs is the one you recall from 1994, and yes, good memory, that car did have a engine fire way back in 1992.

Thanks

Title: Re: Another '67 joins the fleet!

Car has standard width Puma adjustable beam fitted . The trailing arms are a over tight fit in the trailing arm bearings , making the suspension rock hard .

CB Performance dropped spindles are fitted , and the car needs to come down about 1/2" more , but the tyres will then rub the wing lips  . So Alex at DEFCON3 is narrowing the original beam 2/3" a side to remove the gained offset of the drop spindles .

Hope this helps .

I have a set of gas burners on 2" narrowed beam with cb dropped spindles. The bottom ball joint is close but no rubbing. Just have to be careful where the weights are placed when being balanced, hope this helps, Alex

They have been powder coated but the rims and spokes detailed. They work well with the Lotus white paint. May try black running boards just to see what they look like - but the car was originally delivered with coloured running boards and to be honest, I have always really like coloured running boards. You don't know until you try, so, I'm going to give it a go just to be sure.

Even though it was freezing cold this morning, before I left for the office I couldn't resist pulling the car out of the garage and checking it out in the daylight. I'm really happy with how it looks and even more happy to be able to say it's mine.

Another piece of the puzzle arrived in the post today - so the image of how I want it to end up looking like that has been running around my head is coming together. Expect another update really soon!  ;)

Well, Ivan, you got yourself a real nice ride again.  The gasburners make a whole new car and they look extreme well detailled, but as you allready know, they are magnesium (like your BRM's), so you will need to polish them up by hand every sunday morning to keep them this cleen, but then again, they are worth it!

Here's the latest change. Chris Morley had a batch of these frames made about 10 years back and I kept one back as I knew I'd use it one day. I had two US style plates made one in black one in yellow. I thought the yellow would work best with the blue on the frame and the white of the car.

The weird thing is that Chris Morley had the license plate frames made in the USA and the car came from another Chris Morley here in the UK.

Car looks really good Ivan! Nice to see a change with the gas burner wheels painted in the dark silver color. I dig the combo!

Expect another update really soon!  ;)

if you're removing the coloured running boards I'd be interested. My cars lotus white  :)

Regards Ron

I won't be getting rid of them, but I do have a pair of 'spare' coloured ones - and spare wing beading too! Interested?

Saw this at the railway crossing last night. Sweet as Ivan. I had my first pang of regret for selling mine! :(

Where were you?
I got stuck at the crossing for ages - seems every time I go near Farncombe that happens. DULL!
As it was a nice evening I went out for a bit of a rip, just incase any cobwebs needed blowing out of it!  ;)
You're only round the corner - you're always welcome to ride shotgun on one of my ricer hunts.

As yet the new '67 has not claimed any scalps and, has a very long way to go to catch the Beige '67.
Still, it is eager and shows willing and that's what's important.  :D

And I agree, they are filth!

Here's an update - not a bit of an update - a lot of an update. The '67 didn't make it to the VolksWorld Show as planned as an engine problem ruined the plans.

I went to the workshop over the weekend and lapped the valves in, tomorrow the crankcase is going to the Case Doctor for a full medi-Cal, hopefully he won't say it needs to be taken outside and put in front of a firing squad!
The lifter bore was worn quite badly the further in you got, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. We've got the ally lifter bore inserts - so we can only hope for good news.
I've got my cousin's wedding this weekend so I won't be able to start the rebuild until the weekend after, but I am so keen to get it back together I might have to do some midnight oil burning during next week. The only issue is that by the time I get back from the office it's usually 7 to 8pm and the Funkenblitz workshop is 40 miles away from my home so by the time I get there I'll probably meet myself coming out to head home.  :o
I also need to sort out a new cam and lifters and the FK8 I took out had a weird fragrance to it, I am sure it smelled like lavender! I asked a few people for unbiased opinions and they agreed, it did have a whiff of lavender about it. Bearing this in mind, it made sense to call the freephone number for The Camshaft Hotline and very understanding operative, called Chad, suggested the FK10 as a more manly choice. He also said if I didn't run with straight cut cam gear I should be ashamed of myself and seriously consider self harming... Nothing beats good advice, especially when it is free!

lmao!  I had a lavender turbo once, it now lives in the corner of the workshop and we mock it every time we pass ;)

Cheers Cathal, but all I did was wait for the phone to ring with my fingers crossed! I'm down at the workshop tomorrow thought cleaning the case halves up and starting the rebuild. Can't wait!

At the weekend I'll be in the garage at home detailing up the engine bay ready for the time I can reunite the motor and car again. Now the sun is out and the evenings are lighter it hurts like hell to have the car sitting there with nothing under the decklid.

Right, Ivan, I know the feeling.  Mine is broke too.  With only 14 days before we hit to Germany (Hannover), she doesn't even start anymore :(

But today I can drop her off at a famous engine doctor in Belgium who hates IDA's and always says my car would run better with my Dell'orto 40's, but he always helped me out, so cross fingers.

It's probably a carburator problem as we have allready changed all ignition components.

I'll keep you guys posted...

Update!
The case is fine. I've been to the workshop and cleaned all the magnesium swarf and grot off and it's ready to go back together. Fellow club member Alex Taylor had a weekend in So Cal and brought back the parts I had ordered in his luggage. So now it's just down to making time to get back into the shop and put it all together. The sun is out and there's nothing worse than coming home to a Bug with no engine in the back.  >:(
Still, once it's all back together and up and running it'll be great fun.
Oh, talking of Alex Taylor - he did a superb job on giving the original beam a nip and tuck. He's taken a little width out of it and fitted adjusters. I am over the moon with how it came out.
If you've got a few spare minutes have a look at his site http://www.defcon-3.co.uk/

Title: Re: Another '67 joins the fleet!
Post by: Ivan on September 24, 2010, 17:21:48 pm
The car wasn't even going the Friday before the show - it was all very last minute. Due to the amount of shows I've been at this year, the engine build didn't get a look in. I just didn't have time to get down to the workshop. If I had a spare day at the weekend I spent it with my son. Anyway, we decided it was going to the show on the Friday before and so I got the car transported down to the workshop. The engine was still totally stripped and the new narrowed beam wasn't on. I was at Vanfest from Friday until Sunday night and had to finish the magazine on my return on Monday/Tuesday. Tuesday night late I had to meet with Randy Carlson of Old Bug and drop him at the airport to fly back to So Cal. Wednesday eve I wanted to spend with my son, as I wasn't going to see him. He was sick in the night and I go NO SLEEP. Meanwhile Pete Roberts at Funkenblitz and Alex Taylor at Defcon 3 got the engine built and the beam on. The car was ready at 1.00pm on Thursday and we literally put our bags in and drove straight to Germany. I've got to admit it was a bit nerve racking, as not only had the engine just gone together, but also because I hadn't remembered to sort out any European breakdown cover! And being in a hurry, had forgot to pump up the washer bottle! Eight hours later we were about 20 miles outside Bitburg in the rain in the dark with a dirt smeared windscreen - I could hardly see, and bearing in mind I'd had no sleep the night before it was really hard work.
Still we made it safely without a single hitch and in the morning I spent hours cleaning it all. The Gas Burners hadn't been polished for months - but by the time I'd finished they looked great again.
I've got to take my hat off to Pete and Alex - they did a great job.
So at least the car made it to one show this year! Oh, and hopefully it'll be at REME on Sunday.

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like the way the car turned out. I am really happy with the makeover, it's turned out just how I had planned. But I still have a few tweaks planned.
I had planned to have it at Sandown this year - but due to a problem with one of the lifter bores and a flat cam at the last minute the plan went to pot. It's taken a LONG time to get it back on the road - mainly due to the show season and the workload on the magazines, but it was great to get it back on the road and over to Bitburg. I drove it to REME this weekend for the Ivan Hirst vintage meeting and it's a lovely car to drive. My other '67 is a lot more violent, it's an animal. This one is a perfect combination of stock and performance, a car you can drive without any concerns.
This weekend I'll take it to Brighton Breeze.

Paint the engine bay , rebuild the engine with fresh cam ( CB 2295 , FK10 Equiv )  and lifters ( CB two piece 30mm ) . Heads have new guides and fresh VW650 Springs from CB Performance . Heads have been flycut a bit to get the compression up to 10 to 1 . External oil cooler to fit to car , along with temp gauge . Tinware re-furb ( cracked in places ) , Brasilia fan housing to go on . Re powder-coat tinware .

The cam was one of the bad ones from the late 90's - an Engle FK8. The engine was built in 1997 and only did about 2000 miles. It now has a CB cam and lifters. I have done about 1500 miles on it and no problems!

Alex can do you a bespoke beam to your requirements. They are real works of art. From the welding to the paint finish. Check out his website at http://www.defcon-3.co.uk/

The motor is performing perfectly thanks. Nice driver.  Fairly powerful, but not an insane ripper.
