What i figured an early 70's cal-look hot rod engine might look like.  It was all an experiment.  I had all the extra chrome from previous lot purchases, and I thought the gold powder coat would really make it super gaudy and tacky, but a little vintage.

The engine is a 69x88 single port.  Lots of porting, 10lbs flywheel, Mallory dual point, 40mm DCNF, 8.8:1 and a super quick ramp CB cam.  Its a blast to drive and everyone is surprised by it.

Sorry about the filthy engine compartment.  Its currently in my daily/beater that gets no love.

it lacteally came on all type3's with IRS here in europe as they had the 'floating' gearbox and engine setup. i added it to my type3 to act as a support and it works really well. i opted to use the original rubber brackets and if necessary make solid/stiff brackets, but it was never needed.

like the breather BB was talking about in a different post, their stuff works! i thought about just giving it a shot and see what would work or not, i didn't need to invest much and i don't like the look of a berg bar. and it really works. that is all

Eddie

no frame forks, so the engine floats on the nosecone mount and that rear bar, IRS type 3s, type 4s, bay window buses and t25/vanagons  are all like it along with a WBX turbo car from Norway ;)  No use for a swingaxle car though I think

Eddie

no frame forks, so the engine floats on the nosecone mount and that rear bar, IRS type 3s, type 4s, bay window buses and t25/vanagons  are all like it along with a WBX turbo car from Norway ;)  No use for a swingaxle car though I think

Is that Fram filter a breather? The technically challenged want to know.

The reason I asked is because I have seen this done before AND the oil lines seem to be conected to the "Breather outlet" ie the fuel pump mount and the oil filler/breather...... I can't imagine this would be good for oilflow/pressure  :-\

Have a CLOSE look at the pictures.....

Title: Re: Show us your cal look engine's.
Post by: glenn on January 04, 2014, 17:04:31 pm
It looks like it's just a breather and not a actual filter.

The inlet is from the fill breather and the outlet is to the fuel pump blockoff vent.

Richard's motor has a conventional fulll flow filter. The Fram canister is his breather can. I think the front of the lid (not visible- against fan housing) is slotted to vent to atmosphere. He put a lot of thought and test fitting to what you see in his engine bay. It doesn't just look nice, it runs very strong and very cool. And it isn't just another cookie cutter combination copied from 100 other cars.

True, the canister is just used as a breather.  I love the look of the old Porsche/okrasa motors that used those filters, but obviously they aren't going to work well on a higher performance engine.

Like Jim said, the Fram canister is plumed to the breather ports and the top end of the canister is notched/slotted (not sealed) to vent.  Probably not the most efficient breather, but hey, I like the way it looks  ;D

My actual oil filter is a Canson spin-on unit thats hidden under the car.

I saw a comment where someone said that it's a 3 litre, and that the case is a 30 hp merged with an aftermarket case.

Belongs in this one.
