Title: Volkswagens you don't like
Post by: Jim Ratto on November 20, 2007, 01:42:48 am
for me it would have to be 1967 and earlier Type 2

I hate driving them, I hate working on them, they're too expensive.

Im right there with you......Hippies smell

It has nothing to do with hippies, gypsies, mullets, ferrets, or carrots ( ;D), flower power or stinky showers, they are just torture to drive, own, work on.

411/412. Damn they are ugly!

For me its the start of the water pumper cars - Rabbit, Dasher, etc...

A close second are the later 70's - I never liked how the tail lights kept getting larger, and uglier. ::) :P

Pig nosed (70 and later) type 3's.

411/ 412 , plus having to pull the engine on an air conditioned bug results in ugly language.

I like the 70's Rabbits. Built like iron.
A simple car that could run and run with simple care.

Super Beetles, Vanagons, Anything water cooled or fuel injected, and I think early Buses are easier to work on then Bugs and a blast to drive. I agree about the too expensive part though. They used to be cheap.

I can put up with late model Beetles up to '72. Cant stand Super Beetle 'verts. Hate big bumpered Ghia's. Of course 411/412's and pig nosed type 3's, too. Water coolers are different all together.... apples vs oranges

No, if this were the CLF we would be yelling at each other over squishy pistons.  ::)

There was a 411 woody wagon in one of the mags a few years ago that looked killer. Only reason folks don't like them is no one has found a way to make them cool looking.

I like 412's. With a little effort they could look quite good! I also like the later type 3's.
I don't like late big-bumpered ghia's, the Ghia is just too curvy/round for the later bumpers
I don't like American supers either. And I also don't like later type 2's
Type 2a and earlier are quite cool... (but too expensive indeed)
Oh and the 411.. that nose... yuck...

Nice job! This conversion makes the Vanagon more tolerable. Very popular in Oz and NZ. Do you have any photos of the top side?

That thing is badass! There's a guy up here with a late 80s Sychro double cab. He paid over $30,000 for it in Canada.  :o

;) I'm just bitter because my '70 has had the rear bumper mounts, valance, bodymounts, rear outer quarter panels, rear crossmembers, door-post bottoms, front flitches and valance all replaced because of the standard of repairs being so bad! Oh, and I've replaced the complete floorpan, because both panhalves had been replaced badly, and I've freed up and re-welded the replacement heater channels too. Just the front bulkhead to replace, then I can get on with getting the doors replaced (both of those were too badly repaired to use...) :o :D

Now, if this was an AC Cobra, or a D-Type Jaguar, you'd keep all the old bits and create a new car out of them, claiming it to be an original! ;D

:D Yes, but it would have to be stamped "Made in Denmark" - it's all old repair panels that I've cut out and replaced! :D

>Volkswagens you don't like

Pretty much all Volkswagens that didn't leave the factory with 5x205 bolt pattern, later but non 1302/03 'Vert or Karmann (until '70) would cool to own too. I like the design of Split Screen Bus but not sure whether I would like to own one. I am probably getting old since the early Bay Window buses are starting to look okay  ??? :P :-\

Someone mentioned brand loyalty, I got interested in Volkswagens because of Resto Cal or Cal Look (Beetles) and the design of Vintage Volkswagens, I don't really see a connection there to modern Golf nor 70/80/90's watercooled shitboxes.. Modern Volkswagen is just like any other modern car, way to move you from place A to place B without any special feeling.
