 ::) I would like to know your taste as regards rims for one cal look. which you would put on your cal look????original  models or beautiful repro???  don't hesitate to add some pict of your preferred rims. for my part here's my small collection of rims og empi 8 & 5 spokes, crestline, and flat 4 brm' S
for me the real empi 8 are the most sexy wheels for a pure 70's cal look  8)
i hope you 'll add some cool wheels ::)

the crestlines are my favourite.

as i don't have the money to buy some fancy old wheels, i would buy repros, (enkeis at the moment). i still have my 356 repro-chromies in my garage and i like them that much, that i will not sell them.

oh, and it's alway a question of getting the wheels street legal here in germany, too. can be difficult with some old original aftermarket wheels.

Here is my favourite. Still some work to be done before they are ready for the car though:

 I like almost every 5-lug wheel. Different wheels look good on different cars. It just depends on which style your prefer...

 I have had some 4,5" sprintstars lying around for my splitwindow. I once traded them with a guy for normal 5-lug VW wheels.
 The guy I traded 'em with didn't care what wheels he had on his buggy as long as it looked okay... :D
 I've sold those Sprintstars a while ago to buy my Shorrock. I have to find other wheels for my split now... :(

 For my 1967 (model '68) bug I have bought some Old School Fat Lip G.T. mags (as VW calls them)... 
 I hope to find 'em on my doorstep in about 5 weeks. Can't wait!!  :)

Nicely detailed BRMs (Speedwell or quality repros) or Ercos (DDS of course, too). Raders are ok, too. But I'm thinking of going back to my Ercos.

My rules of wheels!

Any wheel heavyer then a fuchs alloy sucks ;D

Most importent is the front wheels, when they hang two feet up in the air 8)

Other then that I like most wheels from the golden era (e. g. the 60's and 70's  :-\)

My #1 choice for a race car would be a set of DDS rims, for the simple reason that these rims are an item designed for drag racing only. OK, some use them on the street, but if you hold one in your hands, you'll realize they're not made for hard cornering... They are light, very light... ::)

For a street car I like detailed Fuchs, maybe that sounds boring but I like them! (Fitted by using a 356C brake system, of course... ;D)

I can't say I have ONE wheel I like or prefer.

On my Ghia I can't think of another wheel that suits it better than my original Gasburners. On a '68 Late Looker I would prefer original Empi Spyder mags (aka 8-Spokes), on a wide five bug I love chromed Srintstars and original Empi 5s. You see, my choice of wheels always depends on the car and usually on the bodycolor as well.

 I was thinking of buying the American Racing wheel with the 4 "spade"-shaped spokes for my 68 bug,
 but somehow I don't like wheels with an even number of spokes as much as I like wheels with an odd number of spokes...  :-\

My favourite wheel on the "looks scale" is the 6" Fuchs. And on the "function scale", original Gasburners, light, but so ugly that they grow on you!

The wheel on top of my wish list right now is a set of 7" Torqe Thrust for the Porsche pattern.

In the 5x205 category I long for speedwell BRM's... and BIG WHEELS
In the 4x130..  just one wheel.. Empi spyder!

I love my Chapparals. Slot mags are just soo 70ies, so American.. Ideal for a period looker. Most of these were wide and 13" and 14" and meant for Manx's. Mine are 15x5 and perfect on a Type 1 with 50mm narrowed beam. "Rounder" and more sexy than the Ansens. My opinion.

I like my Raders but must fix a car to have them on.

I love these Sprintstars, at the moment in work, but soon they will fit the front of my car.  ;D
Not sure if I should paint or crome them?

Also I really like American Racing wheels in 5x205 and 5x130.

Sorry I wasn´t precise enough, the question is chrome/black or silver/black, don´t like fully chromed wheels out of 356 wheels.

I have the luck to own 2 complette sets, so the tendency goes to fit one car with a chromed set and when the other car is finished put the other set painted on her, but not sure at the moment.

Have another look at VW-Schnellfahrer's chromed/black ones posted earlier in this thread...and doubt no more my child.

There are so many cool old wheels, hard to tell a favourite. They all rock, if they are on the right car. I am not very fond of repro wheels in general... This is my oval on crestlines.

Btw, when I see this picture I am so glad I changed my lisence plate to US size ones in old dealer frames. Big plates simply look crap  :-\

I like most 60s and 70s aftermarket wheels for VW's, but have a special passion for vintage 5-spokes.
My contribution to this wonderful thread is the two sets I have in my possesion, a set of 5" Rockets (with the pointed spokes) and a set of 6" ET Mags.

I just have to mention "Cal Part Mags" thats what I'm running on the Manx

 Some call it "Fat Lip Rivieras" and others call it "Fat Lip Formula Vee Wheels" and Volkswagen calls them "G.T. Mags" in their old brochure...

 The ones in your pic and mine are 100% the same. I'm only wondering why no one in Europe has these wheels fitted to their bug??
 Are they unsafe? Don't they fit very well, or are they just very rare on this side of the ocean??  :-[  ???

This is early rivieras on my old -67. The early rivieras has a tapered edge and the later has a more square edge shown below.

A friend of mine has a set, had them on his 69 looker for a while. Only at the rear though, as they won't clear the calippers at the front. Drum brakes only

I got to get him to buy a pair of flat lens lucas lamps  :-\ Car is now running on Porsche 914 wheels

 That's a little downside. But for now I still have and will be using drum brakes so it's not a huge problem...

I, personally, like minilites but not on a Cal Looker. They do look good on a circuit racer or hillclimb car from the 70s.

A cal-looker is a high performance vehicle so I like to emphasize lightness and keeping the unsprung weight as low as possible. On the other the hand I like the wheel to be an original period wheel instead of a repop (as I try to avoid repops in any "important" parts of a cal-looker, such as wheels, steering wheels, shifters etc.). And the wheels must be affordable and attractive. Also some restoration work by myself is OK as this is a hobby... Based on those criteria I've chosen early "deep" Fuchs (5,5" for the front and 6" for the back). I have also managed to buy the wheels (in unrestored condition) one at the time over a longer period to help financing them.

I do love the period 5 spoke and slot mag wheels obviously preferred by our Norwegian sisters and brothers. Of the 5x205 wheels however my absolute favorite is the Torque Thrust D-spoke (not the Troker repop obviously!).

In my opinion early Fuchs wheels are one of the best wheels for a cal looker regarding quality, availibility and weight BUT especially in germany there are so many cars equipped with Fuchs wheels that I´m kinda bored of them.
My favorite when it comes to cal look wheels are Centerlines or any vintage 5-spoke wheel.

this my 74 ,It's crazy as a car can change just look by changing rims sometimes it makes more oldschool ( brm ) and sometimes more cal look ( empi 8 )

Hello all . I'm new here and would like to show what wheels i got on my looker.
They are 5,5 KPZ with 215/70/15 in the rear and 145/15 in front.
I got another complete set of rims in 4,5 " KPZ and are planning to run those in front with 135/15.

I guess that would be a good setup if i drop the front down just an inch moore.

i got it that way and dont plan to change it. Front end is from a 69 with brakes and everything. Better than stock 58  ;D
Rear is 74 IRS with 69 brakes.  Handles great and is not so common look so i like it.

There are two models if I do not make a mistake in magnesium and alu??and also there's 2 versions in the left  is the later and right is older version

I must say 914 "baby" Fuchs. I run them on my Notch. Also the baby burners and Pedrinis are nice when polished and/or detailed. I like them in polished/grey rather than polished/black though.

I'm looking for some nice wheels for my 1302 looker project.
I was thinking 'bout 4-bolt fuchs, 4-spoke BRMs replicas ( I wonder If they were popular back then), 5-spoke flat 4 fuchs replicas and heckmesser/cookie cutters.
I'd like best the flat 4 fuchs replicas, even though they're popular.
Here, in Poland where I live the cal-look style is still quite unusual and barely known, so I'd go rather for a classic combination and polished Fuchs ( like these flat 4s) is something that suits best. The 4-bolt fuchs are more affordable, but my 2 mates drive arounnd with a set of these...
I really like the 4-spoke BRMs replicas, but I'm not really sure they suit a superbeetle...
I got lots of ideas like centrerline replicas out from Big boys Toys o these cookie cutters.
Tell me, what do you think?

I really interested for cal look modifications. But, I don't really know wich is the right way to have a nice looker. In fact, wheels are essentials for the look of a car and it's rather difficult to make a choice.
I have 4*130 Ronal on my 68. Polished and painted. But with really poor paint job  :-X .
Do you think that is a good choice to have a cal look with the right feeling?

How cool is that, i've only just noticed these wheels earlier on in this thread. I have never seen any lookers with these wheels before.

I've got a set of 4.5 and 5.5 myself that i'm gonna restore by sandblasting, powdercoating and painting. Gonna run 205/70s and 175/65 up front (for some traction) It's nice to see an example already though. You wouldn't happen to have a pic with the new 4.5s in front do you?

I realy like the Ronals in black and polished. It's not a very common wheel on Cal Lookers, but they suit your car. To be honest, I like it if people put parts from their own continent/country to their Lookers. If you are from Swizerland for example it would be cool to have a car running on Hegglin wheels and have some Hegglin parts at the engine as well.
So why not? The Ronals a period, that's what counts!

Well, maybe... I cant see the reg number on your picture but it is the car that was built by Trond Dahl from Norway in the late 80s. But the car has the right wheels, I guess I see 356 brakes so yes this is the same car. Where is this picture taken?

Thank you! It was absolute torture to get a complete set of 5! Heres a set of cookies on my friends daily driver '67. Not old school cal look, but unique in its own right. I keep telling him to swap the 7" fronts for some 6" and ditch the 195/50s for some 185/60s. Someday...

The '67 is unfortunately no where near completion! Ive got too many irons in the fire, my friend. But it will be black, have lots of gold pinstriping, a pile of Race Trim, Treuhaft, and EMPI Parts, and run 11s naturally aspirated- on pump gas :)

Here is my steering wheel, also Cosmic. The ashtray is now filled in as well. A custom panel I fabbed for where the washer and brake resiviors used to reside. My removeable (and smoothed) rear apron with center exhaust outlet (collector will pass thru it once the trans raise is installed), it is now finished. And an old picture showing the glass fiber hood with gauge panel resting on the roof. Its a long ways off, thats for sure!

Of course I am! The decklid is also glass fiber- a vintage "scooped" '67 version I am mounting to the stock hinges.

 Here is some of mine.  The BRM's are currently on my car.  The FF 5 spoke has some of the new flat caps from Canada , they are very cool.. The Fuchs is a 14" & they are on my 77 westy, they are painted around the lugs like the 67 911 Fuchs. Wheels are fun to mess around with, they can totally change the car.  Later   Bill

I personally like the porsche wheels on Karstens (DFL) 67 bug, those are
Remotec-wheels in 6Jx15 (I know they are also available in 4x130 patern)
I dont know, they just fit the period..
I also like the gasburners.

yes, bahama blue, but no narrowed beam. The wheels stick out a bit but I am not sure I want to make that kind of permanent alteration.

Same year,same color and same wheel for me but my car is not yet ready for the paint :(

the fronts roll on original spec 155s, and whilst I havent measured it, it is probably around an inch. Sadly my car isnt as clean as the photos suggest, but I dont care, I still love it - I have had it 15 years and counting...

yes, it is a nice shade, it was really nice when it was first painted, but years out in the british winter took its toll whilst I built my old cabrio, it lives in the garage now  :) You will have to post some pics when yours is painted!

I currently have 3 sets available to me: detailed Flat4 BRMs, wide-5 Ercos, and polished 5-spokes.
Unfortunately, I've always admired and wanted a set of Fuchs, polished lip and spokes, black insets .... that's what I'd like. ::)

Well here's the new look......maybe. Switched them out today.

Seriously!? :D I decided that I fucked up that body a bit too much when I rolled it on it's side years ago :'( Even after I swapped the roof, I knew it just was never going to be perfect again- especially when I plan to have so much of the interior metal painted and shiney. So... I got AssHull's old '67 body with the haggard front end. I'll swap the front metal from this car on to that, as well as the parcel shelf and whatnot. I'll use my old pan so legally it will be the same car ;) Been a bit tied up with AssHull's '67 sunroof at the moment, but I plan to start work on my chassis once his is done. New plans include a 2" trans raise and a torsion narrowing of about 30mm on each side :)

They are cool wheels too and perfect for cal-look in my opinion, it's another nice wheel from the 60s and 70s like the Ansen/Slot Style we don't often see. I like this kind of wheels.

Here is before and after shots of my Cosmics that will go on the Euro 67. In my opinion these are one of the best. You just cant beat an original 60s/70s wheel. I'm a big fan of repops too. But this is one of those wheels that will probably never be repoped!!

I have a set of Porsche pattern Cosmics. I bought 11 wheels to get 5 very nice wheels, and I spent a lot of time and a lot of money (for the time, now they are worth much more) to get them. It would really piss me off if they were reproduced and any Joe Schmo with an internet connection and a Visa could order up the "same" wheels ;)

I've recently picked up a set of early Fuchs that I'm going back and forth on polishing and painting, or having them anodised and painted. Personally I like a little bling, but I also like the all business look of anodised alloys. Hmmm, decisions, decisions. I've always liked alloys, always felt they were the ultimate wheel. When I was a young buck I could never afford them so now I can. I'll run 'em for awhile till something else strikes my fancy.

For the moment, I'm running fully polished early Superior wheels. Something you don't see every day.

2.0l FUCHS MARK NOT THE SAME ON THE 924 PORSCHE

Here's mine...Kinda 60's pre-cal-look with real 356 (4.5") rims in the rear. I am getting ready to build a new set of steel rims for this car and would like to have them powdercoated in red as well. I'm going to jam a 26" radial on the rear for a little "meaner" stance, but leave the same height tire in the front (on a 5.5" rim).

Which idea do you guys like better? I have been running this setup on the car for the last 13 years (I change to 4.5" and 5.5" chrome mangels in the summer time), but I am thinking about building some 5.5" rims for the rear and I can't decide if I should use a smooth center or a stock wide Mangel. Also, I am thinking about building a pair of smoothies for the front that have the same front spacing but are 5.5" wide for some wider (lower profile) tires. I actually like the slots in the rear and smoothies in the front as it "breaks thing up" a little. I think it might look too plain if I have smoothies all the way around it (but wider and "punched" on the rear). I don't want to put fancy wheels on this car since I drive it everywhere. Plus the car has always been built as a 60's style hot rod...If I had my way, this car would be a 32 Ford :o! Okay, maybe not ;), but it is styled after a primered hot rod-Plain and simple!

I'm looking for Super 90 (5,5J) wheels for the back and I will then buy some 185/70/15 for them in the same style as the front tyres (more classic look).

English. The centre cap shown looks like a badge from the hubcap of a 356B or C. The regular JAP Magnum centre cap was a simple universal chromed steel thing.

AZOR wheels are perhaps rares, only 2 sets knowned and only one is complete (mine) with all center caps ans bolts.
The other set is owned by an other french guy who lives 150km far me and who drove a perfect green razor KG riding on américan racing.

The grey FPS (Fabrica Pedrini di Siena) 5x130wheels set showned higher was mine before I sent to a californian guy.
They are so much light (not like GB but like Fuchs) and in very good shape because perhaps NOS.

My AZOR set came from a VW freaks of north-est of France but my ex FPS wheels came directly from a guy who was working in a car accesories dealer in the 80ies and he says they are new.

I don't know where was sold FPS wheels.
The only one time I have seen on a Porsche, there was a 911 2.4S of VHC.

To me, all those wheels, were never part of the classic game of 65 to 87 in California ! So you can honestly forget to rank them as Cal-look rims !
Who many of you dream about ATS or KPZ for his Cal-look ? Truly ! 2 people ? Did you saw them on DKP cars ?

This is how I knew the cal-look ... by classic way.
But its ok if you want to drive an italian-look, a mexican-look, a look-Swiss, or built a German look !  ... what ever, but hardly a true dream Cal-look !

Be so permissive dilutes the essence of Cal-look : Power and Simplicity.
Have rare rims or unique rims is not enough to make a cal-look ! It's just enough to a small talk ! Sometimes "new wheels" brings some diversity but... we can call it "Nice car... sad for the wheels" !

At the end... think what you want but, there is spirit to respect.

Reread your classic (cal-look book) and let live again the empi 8, the centerline, the 2L and the Riviera (paint or not) etc... ! Yeeeeeeha !  ;D

The problem is not so much the bolt circle, but the offset.  The Porsche Americans were high positive offset which I doubt you can get with the modern version. Plus the shape of the spokes and many small details differ from the Porsche wheels to the wheels designed for Ford/Chev.   

Dave, I know you had a pair of sevens narrowed - I'm guessing you had the extra material taken out fo the back of the wheel. If the Chevy ones were used, couldn't you just take the extra material out of the front instead? :o

There was a good post on this forum a while back with info on the americans. the majority of the ones you see for sale are the "straight spoke" ali versions, like on the 911 photo above. as Dave said, bad offset (for beetles) which is why they get narrowed and also because they are usually 7 inch wide. the proper "D spoke" (so named because the spoke curves around the caliper of a disc brake) were made in wide 5 and porsche pattern ( like the DAS sunroof car above) in various widths but with good offsets and in ali (wide 5 only) and magnesium (much rarer) The 6 inch mags have the same offset as 6 inch fuchs. the wide 5 version is the wheel that was copied to reproduce the "torker" wheel by JGE.
the magnesium porsche pattern versions are coveted by early porsche guys for their strength and light weight (plus they look nicer than the ali straight spokes  ;D)

Not exactly correct.  The aluminum 7" wheels on the Porsche above are D-spokes as well.  American did not make a straight spoke wheel for a Porsche because the spoke would foul the caliper.

As far as narrowing the front goes, while this is technically possible, you would run into two potential issues.  One is that it is nearly if not totally impossible to weld and polish a lip without there being a color difference between the welding material and the wheel itself.  The second problem is that if you start with a 6" Ford/Chev American, there wouldnt be much of a front lip to start with and once you cut enough out to make it work, you would have wheels that are as flat as hubcaps!   :D  Offset is as much a product of spoke design as it is the actual depth of the barrel.

I've seen a pair of new JGE Raders that Eric Vaughn widened to 7", all done on the front dish. Looked perfect! Although they were obviously new wheels, so that may be a factor.

One can love the looks of the cal-look cars, or one can love the concept of the cal-look movement... call it the "life style", or just the thought of how it would be to be in a young growing innovative crowd back in the day.

It's been said time and time again by the the cal look guys of old, they didn't know what they started...  they didn't do it by a set of rules... if they were the rule-following-kind-of-guys, think about it, if they were rule lovers, we would not be having this discussion, and this website would not exist. ;)

We all choose the challenges we want, some might like the challenge of making a photo-copy-look car, others, like me, is more intrigued by mental games in the line of "how would my car look if I was the foreign kid on the block somewhere in SoCal back in the day".

By the way, there was also other clubs than DKP back in the day... even thou it doesn't look like it in some books... and their cars didn't necessarily look exactly the same as the DKP cars...

Here is what was considered cool in 78-82.  From "my" perspective.

Alloys (okay Fuchs)
2.0 litres
Centerlines
5 Spokes
8 Spokes
Chromies
PERIOD.

There were rarely any exceptions.  EVER.  (unless I totally forgot a wheel on the list)

NO ONE ran American 5's, No one ran Ansens, Sprint stars?  Gas Burners?  hah!  No friggin way!  Might as well have run Cragars, and flared your fenders.

Late 70's early 80's Cal Look see above list only.

NOW.....that being said, I happen to like seeing cars with unique period wheels now.  I get it.  I like the look.  But IMHO I do not ever recall anyone ever even getting a whiff of a chance of getting into DKK with any other wheel than on the above list.  (again, I am old and may have forgotten one)

But, if Cornpanzer Dave had shown up with his black '67 (with IDAs or the turbo beast!) and Porsche Americans, or Jim Kaforski with the blue '63 on gasburners (first car I remember thinking that they really "work" on, BTW), or Deano with his blue '67 on DDS wheels, would they have been turned away for not fitting in with the look?  ??? I'm not being an asshole or anything, just curious! ;)

Obviously you are referring to 1 club, in a certain time period, but some of those wheels you mentioned as not being acceptable are run on cars from an earlier time, as photographed and evidenced in various publications (ansens and sprintstars), so it seems likely to me that fashions changed as time went on. I like pretty much all odd ball wide 5 wheels, or at least, I am happier to see cars running them than a modern reproduction. Some are uglier than others (Walkers always get canned) but even that makes them cool in my opinion! Whilst fuchs. small 5 american racings and gas burners are always nice, I personally would not want to lose the wide 5 bolt pattern, and unless you are building a modern german looker, I cant see why you would choose to swap it (although each to his/ her own, and if you want fuchs and you can afford it, then why not).

I forgot Rivi's.  Definately not near the top of the spectrum then, as they were probably the most affordable wheels at the time.  They were everywhere.  The old lady down the street had em on her ride.  I still see em on beaters around here all the time.  Though, polish out an old style set (rarer) and you got something interesting.  And yes, I was definately not looking to stir anything up.  I like all these old school wheels popping up.  I was just referring to a small period of time, not pre 77 or so.  It's just at Bug In or anywhere else in the OC, the list is all you really saw around here.  Pedrini's?  Can't say I ever remember showing up to a meeting and someone telling us how excited they were to score a set.  Never happened.
BUT.............. (big butt here), I say NOW they work.  The American 5's that are ridiculously expensive now are way back old school(DKP etc..) and were at the time not "modern" enough.  I think I remember seeing them mostly on widened fenders, blocked out side window, goofy customs then.  Too many shitty cars on the road that ran those.  The "old" wheels that were the hottest BAY FAR were BRM's.  Now if someone showed up to a meeting with a set of Berm's in hand....... thats when we ALL got excited.  They were super expensive back then too.
Hell, Im a HUGE fan of the Moons that Todd Fuller is running on his sweetie.  Dig em.  New wheel, different cool look.  Remind me of Halibrands kinda.
Once again, just offering some thoughts on what was hot in OC in the late 70's to real early 80's.
Yah see, you could pop into Johnnys Speed and Chrome and buy a set of repop Rivi's or 8 spokes.  But to get a set of alloys, or 2.0's you had to have a connection that would "locate" a set for you.  Place your order, wait till they told you they "found" a set.  Meet at Scotty's Drive In on Whittier and pay cash and dont ask where they came from.  It was tougher to get some of those wheels as they generally came off of running cars.
Do any of you Autohaus guys remember the stolen alloy ring out of the Buena Park store.  The one guy went to jail for two years fronting wheels over the counter.  There was serious risk envolved scoring a set of the fine wheels.

I mostly agree with the list.  I'd mix it up a bit, but yeah, pretty much.  Chromies were probably the most affordable of them all.  Thats why I ran them on my first "real" car.  Then I was lucky enough to get a set of in the box original 5 spokes from Dee Berg for $50 each for the ol pervertable.  If only now...... ha.

Shubee how much were you buying or selling sets of BRM's for back then?  They were WAY out of my range.......  You had more than anyone for a spell.

A set of "found" alloys went for about $450 and 2.0's went for about $350 +/-.  Rivi's and chromies new were about $200.  No "borrowed" BRM's or anything Empi as those were protected as already on another brothers VW.  Borrowed wheels only came off of old Porsche's.

Wow... So, the Cal Look could emerge from anywhere ! Why the Look did'nt started in New Guinea, Deep Tanzania, North Papouland or Eastern Mongolia ??
The first Cal-Lookers, young guys, grew up bathed in the ambience of US muscle cars and Hot Rod, riding in Orange County in the sixties ! When pre-dkp members began to modify there beetles, they had the right vocabulary and turned it in their own language ! ...who became California Look rules.

No boubts about that ! But DKP where the first and the best ! They give the way to follow for us and for the other vw clubs back in the day too...

PS : Free for everybody to believe Melbert or Ronal is "cal Look" !  For me ... no way ! ;)

Mike, you are off course right about having a plan from the start of the build, and as I see it, you need a plan even more if you are pushing the boundaries of the look...

If you don't people can start to say: that's a German looker, that's a stock car with cal-look wheels, or if you have to much chrome and bling combined with to low rear end, Resto!

But there is no escaping the fact that this needs to be thought of to be able come up with something people see as a cal looker... even if doesn't have a too high ass and BRM's

This is the difference in building a cool car and a un-cool car (both lookers), and I for one think our discussion is another...

About when it all came to be, you can't claim to say that Greg Aronson built his car by rules, it sure doesn't look like it in the Keith's book.
Ok he might have been wanting to have his cal look like the drag racers of that time, or he was looking at the rodders or something or other.... but that's taking inspiration, not copying...

Just for laughs, if you were to do the same today, taking inspiration from the import dragracers... you would have slicks on the front and a cone filter sicking where the right headlight would be....    I don't think you would get a following out of that

Of course, there is a touch of Darwin to this... or at least it used to be, first big engine, big tires to handle the power, lower the front to cheat the wind, dechromed to cheat the wind some more, and small front tires to awoid creating alot of drag...   this usually fits into any motor sport... don't bring more than you need to get the job done



Agree, but he didn't do it to fit into a crowd... as he was in fact the first...  No way was his aim to build a "cal-looker", his aim was to build a car that was him...  a free spirit (that sounds cheezy), or a thinker...  he did it without any crowd to cheer him on... in fact, he probably meet a few that told him that he was ruining the car...  after all "trim is nice"... thank god he didn't listen...  ;D

To me copying is using the same wheels because "they are the same"....  to be inspired is to fit wide wheels because you need it for the engine, like you mentioned with the hot rod scenario
But please remember that English isn't even my second language... ;)


The word "neo" gives a nice twist to this discussion... and the word is needed since 15 years....   but I still miss a phrase like "faux old school " cal-look...  and I use "Cal-look" in the loosest way possible...

The Cal-look "Classic" has been established in Feb. 75. Since everyone knows what it is ! And everyone knew Cal-Look dont accept anything !

In my opinion, the Cal-look is something definite but shifting because every day new cars come out.
Some try to find the limits to stand out. You're in or you're out. But not all two at once !

Who are able to give limits to say what must exists or, give new definitions to the emerging styles ??
Probably History will. Some remain in the memories as they are given a direction who inspire the majority...

I have bought some Empi 5 spokes for my car, but I do also love originale modified, centerlines and erco's

Rears: Late 15X6 w/M&H DOT's

Fronts: 14X5.5 w/155R14 F560's

The 155R14's are about the same diameter as 135's

Since the 14's are going on an Oval, I think they will look good under the smaller wheel arches.

The finish on all wheels is original with only the black background repainted (thanks to Rayburn ;D)

I have a set of new silver anodized lugs that I'll try first to see how they look...

These wheels were done on a budget (14's are cheap!)

I'm very happy with the results :)

contrary to what i've been told those match very well as the 15" is just 7% larger and the spokes are identical. i'm hoping to post a pic soon. cos this one is off a while back before lowering the front an extra notch and a few other minor adjustments.

  thanks sparkieben. the wheels are 6" Centerline Convo star wheels on the back finnished in satin center, polished rim. the fronts are 4" Centerline Star wheels custom made for me by centerline because they dont make them with satin centers and i wanted them to match the rears.  i will put some update pics on here now

Yeah, they are nice. I like that they are anonymous and very light. With some paint and some tricks they can look quite oldschool racealike as well. Problem is to find 4 of them and when you have found them you have to remove the red anodized paint.

Whats the off set like on your's ? Ive seen these in 6" but Im told there are 5.5's too ?

All the 951 wheels are 5,5" ET 30 and made in Norway  :)

Excellent option for your early Porsche. This alloy wheel is very light (approx. 10 pounds) and it fits most early Porsches without any modifications. Offset is 30. Wheel is finished in Porsche silver metallic.

Not to mention the price....  ::)

I noticed that your MH DOT`s are marked "out" My tires did not have any marks, how do I find the direction? They do look identical and do not have any marks as far as I can see.

plus, to make it contempory, a tough-looking period lightweight rim such as Gas Burners...
anything weighty must be out, right? ie Cosmics, any steels (Sprintstars)

  Don't remember if mine were marked out or not but I mounted mine and marked the rims right and left on the inside and just keep them on the side they are marked.  I don't think they are directionalmarked with arrows but true drag slicks from M&H are marked with arrows molded in the rubber.

My M&H DOTs came with directional grease pencil marks on the tread

I looked and did not see any indication of direction for the tire.  John probably has a reason, and marks them accrodingly........dunno. 

Maybe not a typical cal-look rim but is it hope for these rims? What do you think......

They don't seem to be Remotecs, look at the center of the wheel, they look like japanese wheels but don't know if they made it for VWs.

They are Hayashi Wheels from Japan, it's quite popular on Japaneses Reteo.

the plate on the drums for the knock off were bolted on  or  machined with the drums ???

Spotted these in Phoenix yesterday. In hindsight, I should have purchased them, only asking $200 for the set. But they were 14" :-\

I kinda like these too , look the bomb on pre 67 van's . A mate of mine stumbled across a stash of these in the state's , still think there's a few nos set's still there  ;)

That would make sence as the 5.5's are marked up as GT on the face by the valve's , now i just got to find a set  ::)

Very nice chose of wheels, Fred!  They would also look awesome, fully polished on your car, but then again, all that work, now you only have to polish one little lip/wheel.  Great car!

October 1976 15 x 6" Fuchs with 155/60/15s up front and 185/65s out back. Rears aren't mounted yet since I'm still buttoning up the front end. I also need to clean them up a bit.

I like it, kinda has the aggressive look, like watch out, I comma ta getcha look.

That patina is getting harder and harder to find.

I would leave them as-is, if the car shows some normal wear/patina they look like they have always been on the car.

Like big wheel a lot , especially that you can change the rim's with readily available one's at what size you need ,but wouldn't want to put any proper power through them  ;)

I've just read that Lancia Fulvia wheels have a 4x130 patern, maybe we'll find some nice italian stuff.

4 lugs JP Wheels (swedish brand) were on the 67 when I bought it.
I had first plans to take them apart and replace with EMPI spyders, but finally change my mind...

Love them and.... these are on the car since it was redone some 24 years ago in Sweden!

they're not bad looking, but i've never seen a car with ATS wheels that i actually liked. :-\

I'm sure most of you guys will hate this because it's not a cal looker in the typical sense but I'm building a replica of one from my youth. It's a very 1990's Euro cal look and was based on a 77 Bug. The guy had colour coded ATS so I'm going down the same road and have just picked up a set of ATS.
