Title: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: AssHull on June 14, 2008, 22:39:36 pm
Hello everyone. Chris Hull from Phoenix, AZ here with a '67 that I bought several years ago. Bought Zach Gomulka's old 1600cc and we rebuilt the top end on it about 5-6 years ago. Put a set of 7'' cookies on it, CB 2'' beam and bolted up a set of drop spindles w/ disc brakes.  Also had a stock ratio trans built by Steve Hollingsworth with short axels to get the rims back inside the fenders. Anyway, paint was peeling, interior was stock and worn out plus the motor was getting a little tired so I decided it was time to do a complete rebuild. Plans are to go back to original color of VW Blue, dechrome it, fab a 'vert decklid, trading out the bumpers for Tim Tesnow T-bars, update the motor to a 1915cc with an Engle 120 and up the compression to 9:1. Gonna run the same AJ 044 40x35.5 heads, 1.25 Scat rockers, 40 IDFs w/ update kits, and 1-1/2 merged header. Zach is stitching up a Cal-Look fat biscuit interior (grey/charcoal). Cookies are 7'' all the way around. Trading a local guy for a pair of 6'' for the front to run 185/60 on the front and 215/65 on the 7'' rears. Got rear discs ready to go on to help stop this monster.  Here are some pictures from a couple of years ago after putting the beam and cookies on, plus a shot of the motor.  Started ripping into it a couple of days ago to start the project. I'll keep you guys updated. Enjoy!

Also, if any body knows where I can get a blank left side dash panel so that I can drill my own holes for gauges, I'd appreciate it!!

Hooray cookie cutters.  Car looks cool.  So when you switch to t-bars, you losing the bumpers permanently?

You bet. Goal is to be a Cal-Look daily driver with decent handling and stopping power. I like the look of the T-bars over the bumpers plus who needs the extra weight anyway??   :D

Unfortunately the bumpers are spoken for.

Here are a couple of pics from the beginning of the teardown process. Just started stripping the paint today.

Dammit!  OH well...

Sounds like the car is gonna be pretty cool.  Good luck with the project.

Well the trick is to keep Zach away from the rope. Do that and we should be fine.   ;D

Hey AssHull I just had an idea. If we are going to have your bro powdercoat the wheels, we should give him the spare to do first, then you can mount it up to a 145, and ill throw a tire on my other Porsche steelie so we can have rollers on the front and swap out Joe for those 6's. When we get the fronts done, we can do the same thing with the rear. Deal?

It was a productive weekend for the '67. Got the motor pulled and torn down to the short block. Had the heads hot tanked to get them clean and see how they look. Despite the Phoenix 120+ degree Fahrenheit heat, there where no cracks!!   ;D  Should get those sent off this week to get updated for the new motor.

Made some pretty good progress with a DA sander but that still needs some time and work.

Also, got all of the trim holes welded shut. Still need to get the bigger holes, but it's now officially dechromed!   8)

Big thanks to Zach and Slinger for their help this weekend!  I got a feeling that these boys are gonna cost me a lot of beer this summer  :o

Dechroming it obviously but going back to the original VW Blue. Gonna be running T-bars, Lucas turn signals and keeping the same wheels. Updating the motor from a 1600cc to a 1915cc. Also, putting in a new interior (charcoal/grey). The original post gives a lot more specifics, but that's the general idea. I'm hoping for a clean and simple look.

Good luck on your project. Keep us updated. It's always cool to see what other people are doing to there cars.

Definitely! Without a doubt. This project would be twice as long, twice the cost and probably half as good without them.

Lucky for me, they consider drinking a sport that you need to practice in order to be good at it.  ;D

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on June 24, 2008, 17:20:30 pm
We really kicked some ass on this project Sunday! AssHull should be working on wire wheeling off the paint in all of the little nooks and crannies this week, and stripping the left rear fender (the right rear fender will be replaced with the one that was originally fitted to my '67). One more solid day of paint stripping this weekend, sandblast the rear vents under the window, and it should be ready for etch primer next week. We still need to replace the front clip (gas tank forward), make the rear apron removeable and fill the pea shooters, fill the over rider holes, horn grills and the large holes for the turn signals. Then back to the body shop for final body work and paint :)
This will be a very well balanced Cal Look car! Good power, clean looks, great stopping and handling, too. A very nice, but not over the top daily driver :)

Title: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: AssHull on June 29, 2008, 20:43:39 pm
Another productive week of work on the project. Spent the week working on sanding several of the nooks and crannies and yanking out the rest of the wiring. Sanding the front corner panels though revealed some more body damage that was covered up with body filler.  Already knew the front was gonna needs some work, just gotta expand the area of repair.  :(

Anyway, met up with Zach and Slinger yesterday to get the fenders shaved. Got the the big D-holes from the turn signals and the horn grills welded shut. Had a bunch of random holes in the trunk from the previous owner(s) welded shut also. Maybe it won't be so drafty in the passenger compartment anymore  :o

Got the rubber pulled off the wheels and made a trade with a local guy. Two of my 7's for two of his 6's. Always had an issue with the 7's rubbing on the front when at full lock so I'm excited to get these new wheels.  ;D

Getting the impossible parts to sand on the car and the wheels sandblasted today.  I'm gonna polish up the lips of the rims and take them to get the centers powdercoated a dark grey (basically keeping the look of the black rims but changing the color).  I'm also in the process of polishing the centercaps instead of the plain black that they were before.

Still got some body work and other modification to do before it's ready for paint, but all in all it's coming along nicely.

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on June 30, 2008, 14:50:54 pm
Rich called me about the sandblasting, he said he would have it finished up today, I told him no worries. We will still have it in etch primer this week :)
Go ahead and call the guy at the powdercoating shop and tell him we are going to have to push back the wheels a bit in order to get the lips polished first- I'll haggle Sling about that.

BTW, does anyone out there have a single 6" cookie cutter they need to get rid of? AssHull needs one to narrow for the spare :) Thanks!

I'm not cool then! I've got a set of cookie cutters (6's and 7's) and for my spare I got a 911 steel space saver - thing is the tyre isn't that small! It's a Vredestein 165 but it massive - looks like the tyre off a 747! :D

185 vredestein you mean? they've only got 155, 185 and 205 as far as i know.

Yeah, AssHull has a steel 4.5" Porsche rim at the moment, too.

I just drove by Rich's house to check out the progress on the car... it seems "finish up today" actually means "start today" :D Im going to stop by again at lunch, hopefully Rich can get the wheels blasted right away so Sling and I can get the polishing done before he leaves for Ohio this weekend.

No, it's a 165 - wierd looking thing, looks more like an aircraft tyre than a car tyre! I've got a pair of 165 Vredesteins in the garage too, more regular looking ones. Strange thing is that they came on two different cars (and on two different width steel wheels...) :D

Here's a picture! it's the one on the floor...

Well, the car is down to metal, it will be in etch primer soon. Brand new AS41 is ordered from Brothers VW Machine, cookie cutters will be on the way to Al Reed, with one of them making a short stop at Eric Vaughn's place first :)

We are really having a hell of a time finding a front clip for this thing >:(

I would prefer it be cut at the heater channels and the windshield posts. I will be folding back the rain gutter on the quarter panel and performing the surgery that way.

We couldn't find a reasonably priced '67 front clip anywhere, but this '67 sunroof popped up in Kingman, AZ about 150 miles away. Originally Ruby Red, all 4 quarter panels are clean, only some minor damage to the front and rear aprons, and some idiot cut 6"x9" holes under the dash >:( Has a little bit of rust at the bottoms of the A pillars, which is typical for metal sunroof cars. The parcel shelf is also very clean, the one in the other car was really tender. So now we are starting fresh over with a new body! And we get to restore the chassis as well. Funny how these projects get out of hand ::) Next weekend we will try and strip the remainder of the body, and get it over to the sandblasters and finally etch primed. It will all be worth it in the end :)

Zach, well worth geting the repair panels from Hookys Panel Shop over here in the UK - they really are superb. http://www.hookyspanelshop.com/ I fitted a pair of Veng (or similar) ones to my 70 and wish I'd bought these - I had to do one side twice! :o

Well Zach and I got the body all stripped down the other day and we're ready to start doing some of the metal work. Body actually came out looking alright.  Looks a lot better after getting 20 years of dirt off of it. The 6x9 holes in the trunk still upset me though   :'(

Some more good news. Got my wheels refinished wheels in today from Al Reed in California. :D I was hoping for a little darker grey but Al Reed did an awesome job and Eric Vaughn is a wizard when it comes to narrowing wheels.  All said and done, I have all 5 wheels refinished with the polished lip, grey centers and then had them clear powdercoated to keep them looking good  8)  The spare is a 4.5'', two 6 inch wheels for the front and two 7 inch wheels for the rear. Also, picked up a set of polished aluminum lug nuts for the finishing touch.  Here some pictures. Added an old picture so you can see the difference. Enjoy  ;D

Progress on the project has been a little slow with school going on, but here's an update: Got the body pulled off the pan a while ago. Finished stripping the pan down. Fixed a couple of things: Random holes all over the place ??? a bunch of dents, and the clutch cable tube needed to be rewelded.  Went ahead and added access panels to the tunnel then sent the whole thing off to be powercoated. Just picked it back up this week! Hopefully, this weekend we will start actually bolting parts back on instead of taking them off.   ;D

As soon as we get the wheels back from Al Reed we will have ourselves a roller ;D

Fuel line... the original metal fuel line was trashed, so we want (need) to replace it. Thinking about using some stainless steel braided line through the tunnel. What size do we need? Motor won't be anything crazy now (just a 1915), but it would be nice to be prepared for what the future may bring ;) Also, is there a simple way to secure it to the tank without welding bungs on? Not a problem if that is the only way... just need to know what to get ;)

So we spent the weekend wrenching on the pan and finally got it off the jack stands. It is officially a roller now. :o Swapped out the old ball joints for a set of new ones. Got the front and rear discs sandblasted, painted and installed. Got the tires mounted up to the wheels and bolted them on to the rotors. I'm lovin' the new color of the wheels versus the greenish color that they where before. I'm a lot happier with them now  ;D and I think the polished/anodized center cap accents them well. ;) Still got a couple of things to do before the chassis is 100% complete. Got to bend and install the hard lines that connects to the rear calipers, clean up the grease-ball that is suppose to be a steering box, and waiting for one of the emergency brake cables and long cluch arm. Both are in the mail and will hopefully be in tomorrow. Definitely made some progress. If nothing else, there are fewer parts to keep track of anyway.

Now that the pan is all done, Zach and I started doing some of the metal work.  Drilled out the spot welds to make the rear apron removable.  Also pulled a couple pounds of un-needed weight.  Decided that I'm not going to run a heater in the car (luckily I live in Arizona where it was almost 70 degrees fahrenheit yesterday) so we removed all traces of the stock heater today. Didn't have any gas for the welder so we were not able to weld up any of the holes yet. Probably get to that on Monday when the store is open. Going to work on it more tomorrow. I'll update on the progress.

Cheers!

Shortly after that post yesterday we got bored again so we had another go at it :) Asshull removed all of the factory seal channels around the hood and decklid openings in preparation for Mexican Beetle seals that mount directly to the hood and decklid for a cleaner look. He also cut out the bottom of the rusty A pillars to fit up the replacement pieces from Hooky's Panel shop. I started on fabbing up a convertible decklid, in the words of the great Jeremy Clarkson, "How hard can it be?" ::) I've still got a touch of trimming to do, but so far I am very pleased. 'Course I haven't welded it up yet and that's usually where I get impatient and fuck it all up :D

That work on the decklid is so nice, really inspiring. I wonder how long I can wait before getting out the grinder.

And by the way, the other work is equally inspiring, but I already cut the heating channels in my car  ;D And it is minus 10 degrees celcius tonight  ::)

Thanks for the kind words :) It really isn't that hard, pretty straight forward actually. Just took my time, and so far so good. I'm going to start welding it up tonight as we finally got some gas for the MIG...

I plug welded the brace back in first to restore the proper shape of the lid, then I trimmed the vents to the exact shape of the opening. Now I need a couple Vise-Grips with deep throats so I can weld the vents up the rest of the way...

Bring in those rusty vents to the shop so we can bead blast em, before you weld it in. That way we won't have to cut the decklid in half to fit it in the cabinet  ;)

Just a cut-off wheel, angle grinder to clean it up, and a stone to get the inside curve.

Are you going to remove the brace again to finish off the welds on the inside? when I did mine I just tacted a bar from one side to the other then installed the brace after it was welded and ground down then removed the bar

I've thought about that, but I think I will just get it as close as I can without removing it again. A Dremel and a steady hand will do wonders ;)

A couple spots got a little squirrelly from the heat, but not bad at all. Once it's ground down I'll take a body hammer and straighten it back out. I'm very pleased thus far :)

Finally finished grinding down all of the welds.  Took a little patience (didn't want to heat it up too bad) but here we go. Warped a little between the welding and grinding but Zach took a body hammer to it to straighten it out. Hit it with a coat of paint just to get a feel for the look. All in all, turned out pretty well I think.

Welded up the trim holes, washer nozzle, and it seems like a million other things today. Ashtray also went the way of the Dodo. AssHull just made up some very precise panels from the sheetmetal from the donor decklid to get rid of everything not needed on the dash. Gonna go tack them in now. The dash will be very clean and all business when everything is all said and done :)

Hey that's cool, thanks! Finished dash will not be so bare though. Hazard light switch will be in the center where the ashtray used to be, and a cigarette lighter (power outlet, really) will be opposite of the ignition switch. And it will be painted VW Blue! :) But more importantly...

'68-'69 911S tach in the speedo hole...

Early 914 speedo (100mm) to the right of the tach...

And an early 914 combo gauge (also 100mm) on the left

Still looking for said gauges, so if anyone has what we need give us a shout! :)

Have you thought about having the bezels chromed? What about the lenses.... are they plastic or glass? I have a set of 924 gauges that I had the bezels chromed and new glass to replace the plastic lenses. WOW! what a difference and it gave them a new vintage look (IMO). Heres a peak. The fuel gauge is an off the shelf new VDO, I had its bezel chromed as well.

The bezels come off if you carefully pry the lip up around the edge. I think Fastbrit posted some pics earlier in this thread showing the process. John Troia from Anaheim did all the work back when he was still doing gauges.

We are, but apparently they are rarer than hen's teeth. This will suffice for now until we locate the Combi gauge that we really want.

Have you thought about having the bezels chromed?

Those look good! But I think we will be sticking with black. Right, AssHull?? ;)

Those came out really well. Did you replace the cone shaped plastic with flat glass? I can't tell from the picture but I think those look good.

As far as mine go, the lenses are plastic but I hear the glass lenses really make them sharp looking. I might take a look at some glass ones and possibly swap them out. Still debating that. The bezels though I'm going to keep black. I like the look of both but I don't think chrome gauges would really going to go with the rest of the dash.

Shubee & Monkiboy-
The car is pretty rough. The front bulkhead is sorta rusty and the rear cross braces are pretty toasted. The section under the rear window looks good though- if you want that Lee, you can have it for the price of shipping, just let me know how big or small you need it to be. The car is a '64 if it makes any difference to you.

Got the trunk section replaced with one from a '64 (6 volt). Found out that piece is one year only like the rest of the damn car!! Can't run the proper '67 fuse box with it, so I welded it up and we'll run a modern style fuse box under the rear seat with plug in style fuses. A lot less wiring heading up to the front of the car this way for a nice, clean look under the bonnet. It's held in by 126 (+/-) spot welds, and a real bitch to replace!! Came out very well though, much better than looking at the magnets of two 6x9's when you look in the trunk!! Also fixed the spring perches for the front hood, the decklid mounts, a couple fender nuts, and it seems like a thousand other little things. NEVER turn a car upside down, you'll find so much more work to do! You've been warned!!!

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project

I had AssHull pick up a 914 gauge pod so we could mark out the proper placement of the gauges on the dash. When he brought it up I knew immediately that almost all the work we previously did to the dash should be cut out and replaced with the proper piece ::) So we got on it. I am VERY pleased with the outcome though. The gauges fit perfectly with the little rubber seals in place and everything- just like it came that way. There will be a bit more body work needed on the dash, too much cutting, welding, grinding, and then cutting, welding, grinding some more. Also drilled the dash for a left hand ignition since AssHull is a southpaw ;)

thought you were looking for a fuel and temp gauge for a 914?
We are, but apparently they are rarer than hen's teeth. This will suffice for now until we locate the Combi gauge that we really want.

So the fuel gauges are easy to find and the temp gauges are easy to find. Still can't find a combi gauge in the price range that I'm wanting to spend. Well turns out the only difference between a fuel or a temp gauge and the combi gauge is that the combi gauge has both dials. The casing and everything are pretty much the same. Even the dials are the same. So I just found a temp gauge and simply pulled the dial out of it and added it to the fuel gauge that I already had. Presto...Combi gauge!!   ;D

It's not exactly the same. The actual combi gauge has a couple extra warning lights but it serves the purpose that I wanted. It means I have an extra casing now and two extra panels for the back of it but total invested in the gauge is $45 versus the $300+ I found online.

I totally agree. It makes for a real clean look but yes, I'm going to have a full carpet (and headliner) setup. Still don't know what color yet though.  Waiting till the body gets painted before making a final decision.  ???

Metal work on the body is finished. Grafted in a dash section from a '72 911 to mount a VDO clock from the same model, filling in the void in the center of the dash. The tach is a loaner until we find the appropriate version, as is the 911 combination gauge until we locate a clock. I'm pretty damn happy with the outcome thus far :)

Thanks Lee!!
Are you still interested in the rear window section/firewall? I've still got it, I just recently got back online after my pc caught a wicked virus- that's why I was missing in action. Let me know.

Etch prime is supposed to happen tomorrow :) I still have to drill a couple holes in the dash for the emergency flashers and a power outlet, and weld the heat shield back on to the rear apron... and make it removeable. Other than that, the body is out of my hands and I couldn't be happier :) Whilst the body is getting worked over the real fun will start- 1915 IDA motor ;D

I'm all to familiar with body shop limbo. With both my Bug and my Camaro it was took almsot exaclty twice as long as estimated and cost twice as much. >:(  Last week, I had the doors, decklid and rear seat backs from my Thing repainted. The were done in a very timely fashion and the price was right on, but when I went to pick them up, the were the wrong color! They were supposed to have been done (again) yesterday but I havn't heard anyting yet.

I noticed that Pre-A Porsches had a similar signal mounted just below the headlights, then I realized that many of the cars that originally carried Lucas 488's did so in this location. So it just seemed natural. Plus it was kinda my way of giving Shubee the finger (no offense meant, really!) :D

I'm trying to psych myself up to work on it this weekend. Most of the body work is roughed in, now the body shop is waiting on me! Need to install new hinge pins, fix the drivers front fender, finish the removeable rear apron, and make the aftermarket rear fenders fit (that was a bad choice >:(). I have no problem fixing old original parts, but fixing new parts truely pisses me off more than words can explain. I'm okay with it sitting in the corner and letting it collect dust at this point.

thought you were looking for a fuel and temp gauge for a 914?

Hi AssHull.... i have the same gauges (but not combined fuel and temp) i had some problem with the fuel gauge using vdo original bug's fuel sender...
how do u resolve it?
i have a electrical fuel sender...
the problem is that when tank is empty , gauge is at the HALF
when the tank is full , gauge is at FULL.

someome say to me that superbeetle sender will works...
but superbeetle sender don't "climb on" bug tank...
i'm going mad...

ps excuse me for my bad english

We got the new hinge pins installed a couple weekends ago, and decided to use the standard non vented decklid... the cabrio lid looks better in pictures! :D Doesn't bother me as I have a custom decklid idea in mind that I will hopefully swap at a later date ;) All the body needs now is fitting up the Italian rear fenders, which I'm dreading, as the fit isn't even close >:( Soon as that is done though the car should be in paint soon thereafter :)

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on June 05, 2009, 21:37:07 pm
Metal work on the body is finished.

Did I say that?! :D
I *think* it is now. The rear apron needs to be "massaged", after that maybe weld on it a scosch more. We found a pair of German rear fenders, and then welded, pounded, and blasted them to their current state. The fit is soooo much better than the Italian crap, it's unbelieveable. I want to see color on this car so bad I could puke.

Got started on the motor, as well. Asshull tore down the shortblock of the old 1600 last week. We got the crank polished, rebuilt/balanced set of rods from Steve Hollingsworth, and assembled the lot with CB straight cuts this time :)

He has also been doing some work to the gauges... The tach is off to NHS for a change to 4 cylinder, and he did a bit of custom work to the clock. Looks good :)

Chris or Zach, what tyres were you running on the back Cookie Cutters, and what gearbox and brakes? I'm guessing a standard short axle (pre'68) gearbox with 4-bolt drums re-drilled? I'm trying to work out how to put the same wheels under the back of our '70 'vert. We're going for sixes up front on a stock width beam - if you could fit sevens on with a 2" narrower beam then sixes should work with the right tyres, right? :)

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on June 19, 2009, 17:49:08 pm
When AssHull first put the Cookies on the car, he had 7's all the way round with the stock width beam (just dropped spindles and discs) and stock long '67 axles and redrilled 4 lug drums. Tires were 195/50 front, 215/60 rear. They rubbed everywhere and stuck out a ton! He then swapped the beam for a 2" narrowed version with 185/60's, and changed to short axles out back. Rear was now good, but the front still rubbed the outside fender lip. This time around we swapped the front 7" wheels for 6" (inch less on the outside) with the same tires. I'm 99.9% positive this will stop the rubbing issue, and if it somehow doesn't I know a sway bar will get it. The rear drums were ditched this time in favor of CB Race Strength discs, and taller 215/65 tires on the 7" rims. I'm hoping that the disc brakes don't push the tires out too far...
6" wheels might work on a stock width beam without drop spindles, depends on tires as well.

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Neil Davies on June 22, 2009, 15:57:57 pm
Thanks Zach, I hope it works! Otherwise looks like I'm going to be narrowing a beam! :o

Asshull has been knocking out a few small jobs, restored an 010 that Slinger donated, got the gauges all sorted out, and we modified the alternator stand to work like the ones on a 356/912 engine... pics later

This car is really starting to take shape. What color will it be?  I heard you had some wheels narrowed by Eric Vaughn.  He completed a set of front FUCHS for my chop top too.  Ended up with late model FUCHS that are only 4.5 inches wide. Will run 7's in the rear. Hope to have it on wheels by next week and then start on the 67 rear apron and deck lid.

Your project is really looking good.

The colour was going to be VW Blue (what the body we started with originally was), but I've convinced him to go outside of the VW/Porsche box :)I wont say what it is just yet, but it's really going to pop!

Eric cut down a 6" Cookie Cutter to 4 1/2" for the spare, and it has a 145 mounted to it. Superb work he did!

The colour really changes depending on how much light is on it. It's BMW Laguna Seca Blue, as seen on 2002-2004 M3's. No metallic, just straight colour, done in single stage. It's about as loud and obnoxious as blue can get :)

At this point, other than the pan getting fully dialed in, nothing has been put together. We ordered the body mounts and some other parts on Monday. Shipment came in yesterday but of course, the rear body mounts were on back-order  >:(  Got another shipment coming from them this week, so hopefully they will be included with that.  :-\

The plan is to mount the body on the pan this weekend. Maybe hang the doors and start working on fitting up the one-piece glass. Gonna make it up this weekend?

Luckily the body hit the pan yesterday, so it's starting to take up less space!

Timeless artwork right there... one of my favorites.

Car looks good Zach.

How do you like the painless kit? I have been thinking of using one as well.

--louis

So far, so good. AssHull ordered the Universal kit, designed for a trunk mount (in a normal front engined car) so it gives you a LOT of extra wire. Even so, we'll have to extend 3 of the wires. Other than that, it looks to be something we can handle, and I hate wiring!

very cool zach, it's some great progress you guys have made!!  8)

the wiring looks very high quality. does it also replace the fuse box up front?
and here's another thing, will you mount it under the rear seat? i know that arizona apparently looks like a desert and you guys do funny dances to make it rain, but if the sunroof is not leakproof and properly installed - of which i'm sure you will - the area under the rear seat may .. well.. flood. at least from my experience. i wouldn't want this to happen to the trick fuse box.

i hate my sunroof, i'm sure you'll recall the topic i opened about 3 years ago. please let me know what you can about the installation, i don't have the guts to even open mine. it was full of scratches before the respray and i just installed it and hardly ever touched it again. i still enjoy wetting my front seats when i give my car a good wash.

did you mount the gauges using the rubber rings porsche uses in the 914? i can't wait to see more pics of the install. very neat idea indeed!!

Post by: Zach Gomulka on August 11, 2009, 17:54:49 pm
Yes, it uses the fuse box pictured in lieu of the stock box. We ended up going this route because the original panel that the fuse box secures to had two giant holes for speakers, when we replaced it we had a panel from a '64 (6V, smaller fuse box), so we just decided to weld up the original hole and use a modern style harness, etc. It will be mounted under the rear seat area, you shouldn't have any problems with leaking as long as the 2 rear drain tubes are still functioning properly, and lead all the way outside the car. I've had the "pleasure" of working on a few metal sunroofs, they are a bitch to set up correctly, but once in they are good to go.
Gauges are mounted just how Stuttgart planned, rubber o-rings and all ;)

We'd gladly pay you in beer for your help Jeremy :) But the wiring needs to go in now, it can't wait for you to get up here! We only have the front and rear looms routed, everything still needs to be plugged in and that's where we'll probably screw it up :D

Come on Jeremy! Prescott is a great place to vacation...and I hear Lynx Lake has some pretty cool sights for scuba diving  :D

We are probably gonna need some help. Running the wires was the easy part, and like Zach said, actually hooking up the wires is were we'll screw it up.

So it looks like the loom is running down the heater channel from under the back seat to the front under the hood. How are you going to get the wiring to the engine compartment? Up over the body near the drip rail like stock or simply a hole through the luggage tray?

Are you going to dynamat the floor pan and firewalls?

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on August 14, 2009, 20:01:30 pm
Wiring goes to the back just like stock. AssHull is going to set up a quick disconnect for the engine wiring. I'll Dynamat the floors (we're a dealer now and can get a good deal on it), and use carpet pad on the firewall and behind the panels. AssHull wants it quiet ;)

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on August 27, 2009, 17:36:56 pm
It's coming along, nothing worth posting pictures. Fitted up the front fenders, got a 16 gallon fuel tank from cip1.com, gas struts to replace the hood springs, Fruitcake returned my IDAs' (along with a bunch of jets!), and we tore the shortblock back down and put it back together... long story. Also, wiring is not my forte, I really could use a hand there!

We tried to fit up the decklid a couple weekends ago and couldn't get it adjusted right, it had a solid 3/4" gap to the body. Took a closer look and found the hinge mounts to the body are tearing/pulling down. I don't know how I missed that during metal work, I had the body upside down and I welded/fixed the bottom side of the hinge mounts, but somehow missed this. I'm pretty well pissed off about having to weld on a freshly painted car. At least it's way up where it can't be seen easily, and we've got a spray bomb of matching paint to help hide the mishap. Ohh well...

They work just like Porsche intended... big rubber grommets around each gauge, presses right in the opening :)

Post by: Diederick/DVK on November 18, 2009, 11:25:41 am
Zach, in order to install them that way, are the holes larger than the gauges?
I have all the grommets, perhaps I should enlarge the holes for the gauges and install them properly since I'm not using them at the moment.

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on November 19, 2009, 02:07:24 am
The holes are larger than the gauges. A tach will fit without the rubber in the stock speedo hole if you trim the hole slightly. In order to use the rubber grommets, the hole must not just a hole... it has to have a lip that extends in, giving the rubber something to grab on to. That is why we used the 914 panel instead of just filling the dash and drilling holes, it allowed the gauges to mount up just as they were designed to.

So yeah, it's been a busy month. After the honeymoon he tells me we are going to really get cracking on it again. I once heard that the last 10% of the job takes 90% of the time... I get that now!

Ahh maybe some teasers soon ;)

AssHull has been knocking out the wiring, looks great and most importantly everything works!
We got a new drivers door latch in and functioning, went to put in the drivers side glass last night but we were hampered by a faulty regulator. Slinger donated a replacement this morning so hopefully that and the glass will be in for good tonight. Also got the side mirror on... not your usual Talbot ;) and made up a pedal stop this morning. Lots of tedious work, really. Just waiting on an order from Wolfsburg West and J-Bugs now :)

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on February 23, 2010, 01:44:57 am
Parts lot came in, tail lights on, door seals in, 73+ Super Beetle speedo cable & grommet installed (needed longer cable to suit the new speedo location, worked a treat :))and got the pedals sorted but when we bled the brakes we were greeted by leaks. New master cylinder fixed the problem, we just bled them and everything is dry :) Regulator #2 was less than ideal, so now we've got #3 slated to go in. Speakers arrived, Asshull just wired them into the kick panels and tested for tunes... 4 Non Blondes never sounded so good :) I dropped the front down a little more, looks much better with almost zero fender gap. 185/60's fit quite nicely on the "new" 6" wheels with 2" narrowed beam. Check it out- disc brake backing plates on drop spindles ;D

speakers in the kick panels? those must be very thin then? did you fabricate them out of triplex or sth for better sound?

Yep, in the kick panels. I had some of the ABS plastic ones lying around, so they got put to use. When carpet is finally installed over them, it will look like it came that way from the factory. Using 5.25's up front, and 6.5's in the rear side panels. It's nothing crazy since AssHull (or I for that matter) isn't into big stereos. Just some tunes for cruising :) Stereo is hidden in the glove box, along with a couple power outlets for cell phone, ipod, whatever.

Ball joints are stock style, thanks for the compliments :)

In all honesty I think he plans on doing some road trips in this car, hence the 16 gallon fuel tank, sound deadening, and modest stereo. Who says a stereo isn't cal look?? Many of the cars built "back in the day" were so equipped. As long as there isn't amplifiers in the trunk, and big subwoofers in the back, I say it's all good :)

Trying to get the headliner in before Phoenix BOR this weekend, but there's a slight hold up...

I'm anxious to see the biscuit door panels...for reasons of my own, of course.  Where did you guys get the glove box for mounting the stereo.  Nice idea to keep it hidden from view. I have some kick panels for speakers like AssHulls and may consider a stereo in the chop. Unfortunately I think the IDA motor will drown it out.

The glove box came from Glass-Action (vwinnovations.com), operated by a guy up here in Prescott Valley. It was formerly Innovations in Fiberglass, you may remember it from the Phoenix BOR's a few years ago. It's... okay. It seems to me that there are a few slight modifications he could make in the mold to make it a lot better. It works though.
This car is getting an IDA motor as well, and a good amount of sound deadening to make the stereo audible. When we gave it a trial run, it seemed plenty loud. I'm sure being surrounded by four speakers, even though small, help a lot.

Did you make it to the show?? The swap was great :)

If you go to FRY's Electronics, they have a pretty good supply of these type aluminum boxes that you can install a GM type fuse block inside of.  They are relatively inexpensive and you don't have to fabricate it.  They have them in Aluminum sheet, cast aluminum and I believe steel.  We used a cast aluminum one to do all the wiring on my old off road car.  It turned out very  clean.

Did a whole bunch of work tonight in order to make up this panel, which eventually will be upholstered in vinyl. Behind that panel is a layer of carpet pad, and Dynamat on the metal. When you knock on the firewall from the motor side you get a nice solid "thud" :)

Finally, the headliner is ready to go in!

Are those WW felt seals and plastic?

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on April 22, 2010, 19:10:53 pm
Yep, everything's from WW. The felt seals are fine, the plastics are ok, took a little adjustment to make them fit... but it's all you can get. The cables are from WW, too, and I had to ream out the hole in the back of the sunroof to get the pins to fit.

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on April 23, 2010, 00:02:20 am
Finishing up the headliner piece for the sunroof now, I cleaned up and dyed an original Golde sunroof crank to match and installed it. It's 43+ years old and still light years ahead of the reprodution cranks you can get. As soon as the carpet gets here I can cut, bind, and install the rear fender well pieces, then cover the rear panel with vinyl, install it, and rope in the rear window :)

Hey, did you know that there are 11,809 other topics on this forum besides yours? Yep, it's a fact! ::) :-*

A screw in each corner holds the speaker panels in. Like I said earlier, they will be carpeted over, then the speakers will be installed for a factory looking installation.
PM Slingshot about the mirror, he has a few in stock ;)

That sunroof looks much better than what I usually see with the felt sticking out of the roof. Very nice Zach!

Thanks! I see so many nice cars that has this simple detail overlooked. The felt goes flush with the roof, people! It seals better that way, too :)

this may be a dumb question zach but is that rear piece of vinyl more of a blue grey? or is it the same gray that is used in the visors?

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on May 01, 2010, 03:40:59 am
The vinyl is actually a nice grey/green, it's hard to see the actual colour in the picture, but it goes with the paint beautifully :)

I custom fitted the rocker carpet, bound, and installed. The floor mats are 56-59 versions, modified to attach to the 67 pan. Off to Bug-In! ;D

Here's when we decided the center of the dash was a bit too bare with only the 3 gauges. A friend was cutting up a '72 911 (same guy who traded us the 7" cookie cutters for his 6's), so I asked him nicely for the clock section, and he cut it out for us.

I borrowed the combi gauge to fill the hole and make sure nothing distorted while welding. We of course have a clock in there now, from another friend with another '72 911. He unfortunatly didn't live to see this project finished :'(

Fast forward a bit. To keep the Porsche theme going, we sourced a Durant side mirror. They were fitted to 356C's and early 911/912's.

One day in the shop there was an '86 911 that was backdated to look like a '73 Carrera RS. Sweet car. It would have been great if I knew how to take a good picture!

Door panels. They look simple but were very time consuming!

The rear "luggage deposit". In the late 60's, early 70's, an option was available for 911's that deleted the rear seat with a box. This started out like that, but ended up as you see it here. To look "correct" it should also have a hinged door on each side, but I screwed up so I ended up skipping them for now ;) After this pic was taken I added the Porsche footman loops to the front side of the box for luggage straps (which still need to be made ::)) And yes, that's an EMPI door pull on the top, there's another one on the underside ;)

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project
Post by: Zach Gomulka on June 22, 2010, 03:40:18 am
The seats. I didn't like how the other 914 seats I've seen without headrests looked. They looked like someone chopped off the headrests! So, after I lopped the tops off, I continued the roll from the sides up and around the top. Now they look like they came that way, and they look almost nothing like a 914 seat, which I love because those things are ugly! :D

The steering wheel!! The wheel we started with would have been perfect for the car we originally planned; a "bolt on" Cal Looker. But as the project progressed, it really wasn't doing it for me anymore. I wanted to do something Porsche, but I really don't like those butterfly 4 spoke wheels! I happened to be looking through an issue of Excellence over a year ago, and saw something that stopped me dead in my tracks. A late 60's Porsche 911R wheel. Now the hard part: convincing AssHull that this is a great idea, especially difficult since it was my idea he purchase the last wheel! Not to mention it isn't exactly cheap! Then one day my window of opportunity opened :) He said the steering wheel wasn't really doing it for him anymore, either ;D A big, expensive, smile came to my face and I showed him what I had found. He agreed, and a year later I finally had him totally convinced :) It is an exact reproduction, and uses an actual 3 prong center cap as a horn push, which of course I had the top polished to match the center caps on the wheels, as well as the silver button gauges. I LOVE IT!

Tired of Porsche stuff yet? Me niether ;)
In 1970, Porsche expanded the 2.0 engine into 2.2 liters. Porsche was so proud of this fact that they came up with a decal that proclaimed this displacement on the rear window. I took that, and made it Volkswagen. I had a friend draw up a VW engine, another friend clean up the image on a computer, and yet another friend to make the decal. This one is just a prototype, the real one will stick to the inside, and be available in any displacement figure you'd like (yes, I'm selling them).

That's it for now, I'll try and get some real (not cell!) pictures up soon :)

Now, get someone with a proper camera to take some sweet pics of your hard work ;) ;D

Good job!!

P.s. the decklid prop doesn't look like it'll open the decklid much, or did you mount it on some tubes?

Thanks guys! :)

AssHull's wife is an aspiring photographer, so I'm sure she will step up and fill the void for quality pictures.

No the decklid prop doesn't open it up much, just a little bit ;) At the OCTO show last weekend we scored an original '67 'vert lid, it's at the body shop now and will hopefully be on the car soon. Although I do like the clean look of the non vented sedan lid, the motor will need the extra cooling. I do have another idea I'd like to implement for the decklid in the future, but I'll ned an expert metal man for the task.

I've gotta say, one of my favorite features on this car is the twin rocker style dome lights. At night with the sunroof open and both lights on, the interior just GLOWS :)

Thanks guys!!! ;D The car came out a million times better than we would have ever thought. From a simple concept, to a very special build, in my opinion.

Black knobs for the pop outs came from... err, I forget! I called Wolfsburg West, they didn't stock them but led me to another company in SoCal that did. They came bleach white, but I dyed them black to match :)

I just got back yesterday from a trip to Portland and Seattle, got a nice package in from Danny Gabbard, and the fanshroud back from paint! :) I just checked on the cabrio decklid, it will be done tomorrow ;D

AssHull will be in town this weekend, I might even let him drive it around ;) :D

Yep, that's what I did, after I dyed my headliner flat black... also dyed the sun visors. Got lucky an Bill & Steve's had the black welting for the rear ¼ windows and the pull straps on the b-pillars (black).

I dyed the visors & sunroof plastics light grey to match the headliner. The bright white those pieces come in is horrible.

FYI, the pinch welt that is used around the quarter windows is common stock in any upholstery shop ;)

REALLY diggin' the look of that engine, Zach. Only thing I'd change would be the cam to a Engle 125, but I'm sure that the 120 will work out just fine. Hope that you're able to work out the engine stuff easily.

to be honest i'd expected a more oldschool engine but fair enough, still looks very decent ;)
the shroud came out nice? i still need to grind, sand and paint mine but it's a cool mod!!

and did you weld up the large breather hole on the right side of the porsche filler? i'd love to run one too but i'm afraid it won't clear my Tayco linkage and 1/2" shorter manifolds.

once you get it all up and running you still owe us a few decent shots ;D

Hi Zach,

that engine looks really clean and simple. Maybe I´m wrong but the upper pulley looks quite small in diameter. Is it a Porsche 356 generator pulley?

Thanks, Mark! I chose the 120 for more torque. The 1915 that was in there has an FK8 (similar to the 125) and was very very cammy. I'm hoping the 120 will produce a more linear powerband, with more torque down low.

Except for the alternator, I think it's pretty "old school" looking. I would have prefered a generator myself, but AssHull already had a perfectly good alternator, so in it went. And with all of the electrical nonsense in this car, an alternator probably isn't a bad idea, anyway ;)

The shroud was a MASSIVE amount of work to say the least. There were times when I thought I was going to have to ditch it for a Taiwan 36hp doghouse. Thankfully, it finally worked out.  All of the black tin was powdercoated semi-flat, but I had the fanshroud body worked and painted a gunmetal grey to match the wheels. Also gives the engine a bit of a Porsche 356SC look :)

I'm thinking the large breather hole will get a small gauze type filter, the engine NEEDS to be vented to the outside air! I did have to clearance the Berg linkage for the breather, it just bearly fits.

Thanks Tobi! Yes, it is. Together with the Berg Equalizer (slightly larger than stock), the fan is REALLY moving some air! Get your hand anywhere near it while it's running and it will try and suck it in!

It's an older Kymco 1 1/2" with a 2 1/4" Dynomax by Tiger at A-1.

This motor is waaayy more driveable than the old motor (and it hasn't even been jetted properly yet), feels almost as fast, still revs up to 7k easily :)

We had just dropped the car down off the lift and rolled it outside, so the suspension hadn't completely settled back down yet. The picture shows some tire gap- that isn't present once you take it for a drive.

The engine looks good, but whats dates it the most for me is the mexican(?) alternator with the casted lump on top... the old german ones are smooth up there... but I always prefer a generator :).

I have to say that this car got a real nostalgic and "European" feel... it's like what you would see on the shows in mainland Europe. I would say its the most nostalgic US build since Rick Sadlers car came out.
Just a personal opinion :)
Thumbs up!

Title: Re: AssHull's '67 project

Wow! Thanks JHU! Your check is in the mail! :D

I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but Rick Sadler's car actually played a very important role with this build. About a year and a half ago, we were knee deep in metal work, and the February 2008 issue of Hot VW's was on the stands, with Rick's car on the cover. AssHull & I both agreed that we liked the car very much, except for one thing: the tach sticking up in the windshield. AssHull already had an Autometer Monster Tach with bracket to mount it in the defroster vent, along with some other Autometer gauges to go in the panels on either side of the '68 speedo (looks like a '67 but has a fuel gauge). I'm not a fan of things that look like add-ons, or afterthoughts. So long story short, since we already were doing some Porsche things, I suggested Porsche gauges, and eventually we came up with what it is now. For me, it is undoubtedly the focal point of the car, and it looks like it could have been that way from the very beginning :)

Big thanks to everyone that helped out with this project and for all the support. Like Zach said, I got the car to it's new home a couple days ago. Other then the issue with the pulley, it ran absolutely wonderfully. Wife was even getting annoyed cause she couldn't keep up  :D

I'm new with IDAs so I've got some reading to do to learn how tune them. The change in elevation is giving me a lean spot right when I start to give the engine a little bit of gas. Makes cruising around a real pain. Just means I have to give it throttle  ;D

Zach let me borrow the LM1 to help tune the carbs. So hopefully that will help me out. I'll keep ya posted

CHEERS and thanks again for everyones help with this car.Sling for letting us raid his shop and tools and staying all night to help me button it up last minute so I could drive it home. Jeremy for helping make sense of that new idea of electricity. A special thanks out to Zach. He put an amazing amount of time and care into this project from start to finish. I wouldn't have such an amazing ride had I done this on my own.

My only regret is not following this thread sooner...;D  Good stuff in these pages, guys, congrats on such a nice build!  My '70, which looks about the same since my 2004 visit to Arizona for the Bugorama, is still in the Mark Herbert (RIP) school, and I couldn't be happier. :-)  Once the 2017 is done, it'll still be beat looking, but a whole lot faster. ;D

Nice looking car 8), just one thing bothers me.....the wiper arm nut needs to be painted black!  I would also be tempted to get the glovebox button anodised black as well.

Damn, that motor looks good. I wish it could have been in there for The Classic, but it was just fighting us too hard.

Thanks for the update buddy!

Thanks. We actually used the seals that the mexican bugs used. It just crimps onto the lip around the inside of the decklid. Until we started on this car, I didn't realize they used a different seal but I do like how it cleaned it up. If you'll notice on the front of the car, we did the same thing to the hood as well.

The decklid seal is more for looks right now though. Zach actually made up/modified a decklid catch (I forget what year the catch came from) but it actually acts as a stand-off for the decklid. There is a little bit of a gap when the decklid is closed to allow the hot air to vent out so the seal isn't actually doing anything right now.

Ya, I don't sit in the back seat to often  :D

The rear "luggage deposit". In the late 60's, early 70's, an option was available for 911's that deleted the rear seat with a box. This started out like that, but ended up as you see it here. To look "correct" it should also have a hinged door on each side, but I screwed up so I ended up skipping them for now ;) After this pic was taken I added the Porsche footman loops to the front side of the box for luggage straps (which still need to be made ::)) And yes, that's an EMPI door pull on the top, there's another one on the underside ;)

Great work on the whole car.Just started myself on a 67 cal look project. Want to see more on the "making of" of this luggage deposit. Very kind if you could post some pics during the making...

Thanks! :) Sorry, I didn't take any pictures while we were putting this together. Some of the ideas came from an article in the April '77 Hot VW's, mainly size and shape but I did make a few changes to make it better and more Porsche-esque. I would like to remake the front section and add the doors eventually  ::)

I love the rear package tray area you made for this car.  Looks really nice.  I need to do something like this for my chop this fall.

Asshull is a busy guy, to say the least. He is nearing completion of Test Pilot School for the USAF at Edwards AFB. Him and his wife have also had a child. Even though it's been a few years he hasn't had any time to work out the new car gremlins, so this past January he flew me down from Seattle to help him knock some work out over a long weekend. The alternator had seized so we took that opportunity to "upgrade" to a generator. We also fixed the rear axle seal, again, hopefully for good, and changed out the steering box (the last one was new and absolutely terrifying). I love the look of the engine now with a generator installed!

Define "working" :D

It has a habit of breaking speedometer cables, so that needs to be rectified (uses a longer 73+ Super cable). Oil temp works as it is all Porsche. Fuel gauge works but it is not accurate, too many parts not designed to work with one another (deep 16g tank, standard late model sender, Porsche gauge). Tach works fine as it was converted to 4 cylinder use by Hollywood Speedometer. Clock, yeah right :D

Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully his schedule lightens up soon so he can put some more miles on it and one by one dial in all of the details. I really want to swap in a 74 crank and 5.325" rods :)

He still has it and enjoys the car. He's not much of a forum or car show type of guy. We were just chatting the other day about doing a few front suspension upgrades. Maybe soon, maybe not so soon.

I wouldn't say that he let me have free reign over the build, but he was pretty easy to steer in the direction that I suggested ;) We had a really good time building that car, it was a great experience.

Howdy!
Yes, for better or worse life has steered me away from cal lookers. I sure do miss all the great people I met, I often think about flying down for a classic weekend one of these days :)

Pictures are on a usb drive somewhere... I doubt if I have anything detailed on the seat delete though. I tried to mimic the appearance of the early 911 delete, made stuff up as I went along. Plywood for the structure... I used the 6x1.00mm holes in the corners as anchor points for the vertical section. Funny thing, that vertical section does have big rectangular holes in the face that we were going to put doors in but never got around to...

Good to know on the Porsche thing, I've already found a couple of threads in their forums about the factory delete and some homemade replicas. Maybe in a couple of years I'll be able to get out for a Classic myself, northern Colorado is pretty far from Orange County unfortunately...

Its been too long. Life got in the way of getting this thing dialed in. Couple of kids, college degrees, and cross-country moves. Been re-inspired to get back to the garage though. Got several new parts and plans in stock though. Want to work on some suspension. Got an electrical gremlin that I'm trying to figure out.The clock may never work right but its time to re-engage.
