So, you`ve got 2 major rebuilds ongoing of your own & occasionaly get sidetracked with your mates cars  ;) - what would be the sensible thing to do? ???
Thats right, buy another! ::)

It`s an october `55 RHD oval which has been off road for 20 years...& its a bit rusty ;)
I got it home yesterday & started poking about...did I say rusty??

Not exactly sure what I`m doing with it.. did think baja at one point :o
A one piece front end, full cage & big motor sound more likely though 8)

I`m open to any bits needed to complete it too..

And more :o

On the plus side not having been used for 20 years my guess is tthat he mileage is relatively low...  :P

It looks like it's well on its way to being race weight so i think the one piece front end, cage and motor sound like a great plan. Good luck with it.

Managed to make a bit of progress with the shell & new pan ;D

Two new heater channels, door post sections, lower 1/4`s & it`s stopped wobbling when I close a door ;)
At least until all the inner wings are cut out...

The new pan`s coming on too, its early 60`s converted to IRS using type 3 bits inc. brakes, front end will be linkpin with CB dropped spindles which accept late T1 discs, narrowed just a touch :o

Gearbox will be a raised T2.
Roll cage will be here soon too hopefully 8)
Maybe got a hairdrier for it too :o

If anyone`s got `glass wings, 2L bay `box or 4 stud centerlines (slot mags??) for sale I`d like to hear from you ;D

 

Had another busy couple of days on the oval, put it on a bit of a diet.. :o

Needed to make it a bit lighter and make room for this..


Also got the IRS brackets fitted, took a bit longer than expected to get them fitting properly & that was using a jig I made a few weeks ago ::)
Pan 1/2`s are on order & I`ve got a dummy T2 `box coming so I can get the mounts etc made.


Need to get some `glass wings soon so the body can be mocked up & final trimming done around the inner wings.

blimey,I have been away for a couple of weeks,thought you would have finished by now :D  Those irs mounts look a bit odd,it may just be the piccie but they usually sit in to the frame forks but they look like the pertrude?  and Pete has the mounts for a bus box that you can just buy and fit :)

Oh and i am scared by that engine,it looks very similar to a track oiler that ran at the pod very occasionally??

Well I`ve been taking it easy... ;)

The mounts do sit in cut outs in the horns, pic does`nt show it well.

I`ve only bought the hairdrier & pipework from that motor, theres a 78 x 94 block & crank waiting for you to build up for it to live on.. ;)

Fitted the A-arms & spring plates / torsion bars onto it today, sort out a front beam & its rolling ;D
Also welded up the trim holes - must be cal look then.. ;)

Would like it out next year, it`ll be running a temporary motor & box though.
The `pan is ready for blasting now & the front beam`s almost done, next job is the cage.

I don`t know what year it is to be honest, it came out from under another race car.
It`s still linkpin though with late 4 stud discs & irs swap.

Time for an update :o

Well even what little was left of the original front 1/4`s was too rusty to bother with ::)
It worked out well as I repaired the A-post seams & got all the surface rust down the inner posts treated & zinc primed. I had the new front 1/4`s laying around anyway & built it up with the new wings & bonnet before welding it all together.
Next step will be trimming them back to the bolt line as per the original plan.
I`ve also cut out the rear inner wings now, they still need to be final trimmed once I get rear wings tried on.
Once this was done I pulled it off the original pan for the first time & got it up on stands, I`ll finish off the repairs to the scuttle & inner panels, prep the inside for etch priming then drop it on the new pan and start the cage 8)

You should be working on that Fastback in the background, not the piece of scrap in front of it! ::)

Got a bit more done this week :o
I`d been putting off repairing the rot in the lower `screen corners but it `s done now & did`nt take as long as I thought it would ;D
Also cut back the new inner wings & heater channels. I`ve now run out of bits to cut off..
Just need to do some repairs to the rear wing mounting edges, fit the deck lid & valence, some prepping and the shell`s off for primer ;D

A local fab shop made new end plates for the beam with a water jet cutter & did a neat job too, a trip to the blasters & its finished.

Colour.. think I`ve considered everything from white to black & straight colour to 60`s style graphics ::)
Still not decided but theres plenty of time left for that!

It looks like your project is bigger than mine. Keep up the good work Kev. I can't wait to see how she turns out.

Well I`m at the stage where you spend hours & hours in the garage with nothing big to show for it ::)

It`s now got mounting tabs & brackets for the `glass bonnet & deck lid which have all been fitted & gapped along with a removable rear valance. I`ve had it built up with the wings as well & it almost looks like a car again :o
I`ve closed off the front ends of the heater channels & notched them for a bit more clearance with the cage, I`ll probably need to do the same with the other end too.

Once I get the repairs to the rear wing mounting flanges finished its off for a coat of primer ;D

No Kev you need to cut some more out of it before putting primer on it.

Oh good to see you are working on own car. ;D

Got an unexpected garage pass today ;)

Finished up the rear wing mounting flanges & fitted the body to the new pan, not a hard job now it weighs next to nothing ;D
Once the body was bolted & `squared` I tried the new (pattern) LH door... bit of trial & error but now fits the hole!
A bit of attention with the hole saw & nibbler made it a bit lighter too..

Going away tomorow for a couple of weeks but there should be T2 gearbox mounts & maybe a cage waiting when I get back 8)

also got a photo of a certain Mr Seume that I took of you cutting the Custom Car 21st birthday cake. ;D

Went out today to try in the gearbox, I`m using SSP mounts & there were a couple of areas along the inner fork flange that were in the way ::)
There was`nt much room for the CV joints either so I`ve notched the top of the forks & plated it back up.

I`ve got a bit of a dilemma with wheels / hubs etc.. I`ve got 4 stud rear brakes (late type 3) & 5 stud front ::)
I can either use dropped front spindles which accept late 4 stud brakes or convert the rear to wide 5, even porsche 5 drilled late drums / discs, but can`t make up my mind ::)
I`d like to use 4.5 rims on the front with 5.5 or 6 on the rear which limits wheel choice too.
Are wide 5 type 3 rear drums a straight fit onto late type 3 brakes or would I need to use bug drums?

i have had a set off wide 5's and i run the 4 lugs and it looks like a straight swap to me. the drums have the splined part in them and if the width is the same as the hub off the 4lug type i think it goes on like that. the diameter is the same i think. i can give the measurements off the 4lug, but you have those as well... i'll try do see what my books say.

I`m not sure what `box I`ll use to begin with & I don`t know the ratios in a 1600 bay box but I doubt they`ll work, I`m just giving myself the option to use one.

Whats the limits of a t1 irs box & cv`s / shafts?
I`m aiming to get the body & chassis finished before settling on what engine & box to use, they`ll just change as I can afford better / break things anyway ;D

When the Fastback (remember that car? It's that 'urgent project' gathering dust in your garage) was first out, I broke an output shaft on the IRS box very quickly. That's the weak point, more than the axles or CVs.
No Mercy used a T1 box with 930 CVs, Durablu axles etc – never broke an axle or a CV in my four years, and I don't think anybody did since.

What output shafts are the ones to go for?
Do you change the input shafts in the hubs to match up to 930 cv`s?

p.s. - the postie`s got something for you... ;)

The output shafts, flanges and matching outer stub axles were all from Durablu and I sourced them from, I think, McKenzies as they were popular among the off-road racers. There's a lot more available through off-road dealers as all the cars run IRS. The output shafts had Type 2 splines, while the matching flanges were specials designed to carry the larger 930 CVs.

I'll be watching the post... I'll try to get 'the goods' packaged and weighed...  ;)

If your packing "the goods" for Kev, what about mine !!! and we could ship it all together ???? Ive only been waiting about 9 months  ;D

Not much progress lately but managed to do a couple of jobs..

Got a replacement rh door from VW heritage off their ebay shop, cost the same as the repair sections needed to repair the original ;D
Tickled it with the lightening stick obviously.. ;)

The steering column started off a full size late bug item, 2 hours with a hacksaw & some files and its now trimmed down to just a bearing carrier & mounting bracket.

Oh and some company called Hauser`s delivered some scaffolding today... ;D

Making my car feel proper Lardy now, I've still got proper glass and window winders in mine!

Got home from the vowo show with some inspiration & a few unexpected days off 8)

Got the main cage trimmed to size & tacked together, the inner sills are going to need a bit of work but I`ve got a plan for them anyway...
I`ve removed the body again for access, next step is fab the mounting plates, tack the cage into position then fit the pedals & seat so I can work out the driving position. Once thats done the door bars & main hoop braces can go on.

My 5 stud T3 rear drums arrived from T3D too 8)
now I just need to decide what wheels I`ll bolt to them ::)

Probably be a few weeks before I get back to it again.. ::)
Gives me some time to think what colour it`ll go though ;D

How about white with a red racing stripe from front to back and one up the b pillars and over the roof?  :P  :)

Its been a while since the last update but heres some pics to prove I`ve not forgotten about it ;)

First thing was the heater channels, I always had an idea for them but its worked out exactly as I`d hoped 8)
I`ve narrowed them approx 2.5" and widened the `pan to suit. I always wanted to build it as a cage / pan with the body dropped on last, doing this meant there was less width inside for the cage - not a problem on the L/H side but did`nt leave enough room to fit a door bar around the seat.
I had a pair of c-sections folded up which start on the top edge & come around to the outer sill flange, I`ll fit captive nuts into the underside which bolt through the `pan extensions.
The sill bars now sit snugly along the inner sill & the door brace clears the seat. ;D

Is it finished yet? :o

With the body fitted again I`ve been able to tack the cage into the final position, the B-post hoop & roof hoop fitted back in no problem, I just needed to make the base plates to fit it to.
I`ve got the rear diagonals & harness bar in place as well, with the kirkey seat blocked into position & pedals fitted it felt fairly comfortable :o

What did`nt work was the front A-post bars.. basically I made an arse of them ::)
The do fit well as beam - dash bar connectors though so all not lost!
I`ve now run out of tubing so a call to Housers tomorow is on the cards...

Otherwise I`ve collected some bits, dropped front spindles, 4.5" & 5.5" BRM`s and a `built` 091 gearbox with all the right bits including gearing for a turbo motor & MSE nosecone ;D

If you see someone at SCC taking lots of race car pics it`ll be me ;)

Decided to do a bit of bodywork while I was waiting for additional cage peices to arrive from Houser`s :)
I`ve stripped the paint off all the outer panels & it looks a whole lot better, it`s been a long time since this car had a shine ;D

Started on some of the bigger dents too, I`ve got a single side spot welder / dent puller & its brilliant for pulling dents on double skinned areas, (not that I`ve got many of those...), start on the lowest spot in the damaged area and work out using a body file to show the low areas.
It also lets you keep strain on while working stretched areas with the hammer & dolly.

The drivers door I got off ebay is completely rust free but covered in dents, looked even worse with the paint & filler stripped off ::)
1/2 hr & a dozen copper `nails` later & its ready for a rub with the body file & a skim of filler.

Just for you Fabs, if you look at the front of Tar Babe in that first picture, you will see an area of bent red metal where the bumper mount used to be. This was damage sustained when Greg Aronson spun the Tar Babe and hit the guard rail That was when he decided to sell the car to Ron and Mike. The damage was crudely 'fixed' with bondo, but when we dug it out, you could still see the original paint – and bent inner fender!

First couple of days back in the garage for a while ;D

Got the body lifted off on Friday night & spent Saturday welding up the cage, also made the beam clamps / connector tubes.
Theres still plenty to do on it - gearbox & shifter mounts, steering column & seat mounts plus all the little tabs etc, but its moving forward anyway!
Decided to go back to a stock width beam because I`ve got the wheels & tyres I'm using which should'nt have any clearance issues & I think a slightly wider footprint will help with stability.
Hopefully have it powder coated in the next couple of months though.

Also got a set of front runners & slicks for it, looking forward to seeing these holding it of the ground rather than axle stands.. ;)

Its been a busy week on the oval at last ;D

Thats the chassis pretty much done except for the gearbox mounts & vertigate shifter, there's still a few mounting tabs etc to do but nothing major.
My chief advisor ;) reckons a hydraulic clutch is worth fitting, so I need to work out the best way of doing that.
 
The body went back on tonight and the next stage will be fitting the steering column, after that I'm going to begin the alloy panels for the front & rear bulkheads.
That little lot should keep me busy for a time ;)

Not really an update yet but I collected these bits today.. 8)
Now I've just got to work out how it all goes together ::)

Got a bit of garage time this week & managed to get a bit done ;D
The steering column's now mounted using a stock colapsable column mounted off a bracket on the dash bar and a 1200 bug top housing trimmed back to just the bearing carrier, falls just in the right place & comfortable to use.
Also started cutting card templates for the alloy front bulkhead, looks like it'll work out with 4 pieces, just need to finalise what pedal box I'm using so I can work around the master cylinders.

Main job has been fitting the T2 gearbox, it's tacked in position now but I'm going to fit the shifter & rods to make sure it all works before final welding.
Looks like 1 rod will sit above the tunnel & 2 underneith, either way I've chopped out all the pipework to make room - and I did'nt think there was anything else left to cut off this thing..

Been a while since the last update but I've not forgotten about it.. ::)
Managed to get the front bulkhead all panelled out, worked out ok with 6 pieces in total.
The panels will be bonded & riveted together with 6mm rivnuts into the shell.
Not sure about the finish yet but either an anodised or brushed effect looking favorite 8)

Defiantly ruled out making SCC even in primer now, did look possible briefly but almost 8 weeks at sea ate into the garage time a bit!

Looking for a bit of inspiration at garys picnic next week & a shopping trip to so-cal next month might speed things up ;)

The re-fit has started!
Made a list of what's needed to get it rolling & its mostly front brakes I'm missing - Ben we need to talk ;)
Got most of the beam built but need to find a manual that has all the details about assembling the link pins & shimming it as I've never done one before.
At the other end the gearbox & vertigate are fitted and adjusted, also got the seat in.
Rear torsion bars, bushes & hydraulic pedal assy were bought in the states, hopefully by the time they arrive all the other bits will be done & that'll be it rolling / steering.
The brm's are at the blasters now & are ready to collect thursday, plan is to get the tyres mounted on the way home with them too.
Oh yes, the wife (Jo) has got me a Jaz fuel cell for my birthday next week :-* :-*

Brakes are late T3 rears with early drums & stock 40mm 5 stud drums up front, I'll use a proportioning valve too.

Arrived home yesterday to find some shiney new bits waiting for me ;D
The stuff I bought in the states arrived (along with my newest project... :o) along with some other bits n bobs ;D
The drums should be back from the engineering shop tomorow & if I ever get sent the correct rear hub seals it'll be sitting on 4 wheels for the first time - thats something I'm looking forward to!
Tyres are fitted & I'm pretty happy with the rims, got the look I was hoping for 8)

Still plenty to do but at least it looks closer to the finish..

Well I spent the afternoon fitting the pedals & slave cylinder for the clutch & its all coming together ok ;D
Also have the new track rods made & rear end pretty much built.
Only thing stopping it from sitting on wheels are the drums which I'm still waiting to come back from the machine shop ::)
Hopefully get stuck into the body next week.
Looking on target for paint by xmas... :o

Big day today - picked up the drums so eventually got it down on its wheels ;D
All good till I let down the jack - much more than the 2" I was expecting from the drop spindles so I can certainly get the drop I need but not the adjustability I was expecting for loading, etc. Not a big deal though.

More of a problem is that the wheels just don't fit - far too much offset, I knew the rears were going to be an issue but not the fronts as they are 4.5".
Gives me a set of wheels for my bus I suppose ;D
I've got just over 50mm clearance between the inner tyre face & the spring plates so there's scope for some improvment there.

Dropped on the body for gapping the doors etc, next step is get it into primer.

When you welded in the adjusters you did remove the same amount of front beam!  :P

IRS rear track is 63mm wider than pre-'67 swingaxle rear track IIRC, so that'll be the problem with the back, but the front should be well under? It looks fantastic on the BRMs so it would be a shame to lose them.
Speak to Paintbox about wider rear wings - for Bernies car they grafted two pairs of Day Mouldings wings together - I couldn't tell where they'd added the width! They might have a mould for these now? If not, buy another pair of rear wings and have a go yourself! ;)

I'd assumed the front wheels would be ok because they are 4.5"'s, now I've checked them the offset is et11 same as the rears.
Looks like rather than losing an inch on the outside its came off the inside ::)
I always new I'd need to widen the rears though, just a case of how much.
Really its looking like either gasser style flared wings all round (which I'd do if I can get a set) or go to erco's.

As it stands though none of this is stopping me finishing the chassis or getting the shell prepped ;D

Kev, CSP make wider wings! We 'had' them on ours and they were great quality! You can narrow stock A Arms 'easy' enough by an inch too!

Wheel issues now look solved.. ;D
Built the shell back up & gapped the doors, bonnet & deck lid - pretty happy with how it's sitting but may have to adjust the height a bit once the motor goes in.

Banded the rear wings 25mm , now ready for 'glassing up.
8.5" slicks & erco's fit well, tucked in leaving @15mm clearance from the suspension 8)

Next time I post pics it won't be in bare steel.. ;)

Its still in primer till I get home in a few weeks, then I'll get back on it.. ;)

Made some headway over the last couple of weeks so its time for an update ;D

The turbo & carb now live at the front of the gearbox which meant modifing the RLR intake a bit, extending the header & adapting it from a T4 to a T3 fitting.
The exhaust is going to exit in front of the LHR wheel.

Rear end is now built up with sway a way driveshafts & 911 turbo CV's, sway a way spring plates & billet covers.
The front end is done except for limiting straps.

Most of the plumbing is done now & I've made a start on the wiring, just need to decide where the battery's going to live & make a box for it.
This week almost had it running but I just ran out of time & a few little bits to make it happen :(
Big thanks to Richie for help & advice in the last couple of weeks too, cheers mate ;)

Once the exhaust's done & the fuel cell mounted the body can come back off & get a coat of paint ;D
Its at the stage of looking closer to finished than it actually is though.. ::)

Fair point on the tank location though, probably should have used a rectangular tank above the beam for safety.
It is as far from the engine & driver as I can put it though & the only electrics there are the feed to the fuel pump & line lock.

Last time I mocked up the car there was a problem with the tyres rubbing the arches, combination of it being lower than originaly planned, stock width beam & dropped spindles.
Didn't want to run flared or wider wings so decided to section the wing & raise the arch 1".
Got it rivited together & it now clears the tyres and still looks stock, just what I wanted ;D

I can't narrow the beam as the rollcage ties into it right at the ends of the top tube & theres no gap left for the shock tower to come inwards. Also the beam's finished & powdercoated ::)
The cb dropped spindles have added more width than expected, no biggie though just an example of why you should do a COMPLETE dry build before paint & powdercoat ;D

you could loose the shock towers and go with rose joints and custom end plates.  This would allow you to loose a little from each side and clear the fenders.

Yep that would also work, originally I had a narrowed beam & was going to mount the shocks to the cage - beam bar but decided to go back to a full width beam. I reckoned using a stock beam might make it more stable at speed & the narrow wheels / ride height combo would work out, but as its developed into something a bit lower & hopefully (a lot!) faster  I've just had to modify bits like this as they've come up.
Originally it was only a quick cheap build with a stockish 'box & 1835.. ::)

I agree with a stock beam, but losing 1/4 to 1/2 inch from either side and then adding it via the spindles makes sense to me.  but its difficult to do when you're a few thousand miles from home covered in oil working on that tan :)

I installed a pair of the laser cut towers in Boom Boom's 65 , clever idea nice product and enabled us to loose 2" outta the beam without hacking the inner wings  8)

Had a decent run of garage days so the bodywork's finished at last, got the wings & doors in primer today so that just leaves the bonnet, deck lid & rear apron to do along with a couple of odds 'n ends ;D

Even have my bay running & ready for the mot too 8)

Well I decided to have a go at painting it myself, not painted anything for 15+ years & never a metalic basecoat, but whats the worst that could happen? :D
Took a bit of inspiration from one of my all time favorite non vw's... now picture it with some pinstriping & gold leaf 8) 8)

Now its time to break out the 1500grit & rubbing compound.. :D

Nearly 4 months since the last post so should really update this to prove I've not forgotten about it! ;D
Nothing major to report but the chassis's now back home & I've got a pretty final list of various small fittings etc needed to get it fired up ;D
A mate welded up the old valve holes in the rear erco's so I got the bolt in valves fitted & hopefully get the slicks mounted & balanced tomorow.
The motor was only fitted for mock up so I pulled that today & ordered a release bearing, also removed the exhaust & intake for detailing so with some fresh exhaust wrap & paint it'll start to look finished, add some wiring & oil lines - bingo!
At the front I'm going to build a frame around the fuel cell, Hauser's are bending up some 32mm CDS so that'll give it a bit of protection I'll hopefully never need...
Once that lots done the body can go back on for keeps.
Not a lot of trimming in the shell to do but I've started fitting the alloy panels, bonnet pins & windows.
Still want it out this year & DDD's fairly do-able...fingers crossed ;D

Fantastic project Kev, nearly there! Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh racing. When i saw the pictures of the rear end of your car i had to double take as I thought it was my car! The rear cage work is identical to mine. A very strong setup particularly the tying in of the torsion bars to the cage. Without this mod the torsion housings flex unbelievably...

The main influences have always been your car,tekens split, richies cab & the otto's dangerine along with a bit of the old school gassers thrown in.
I spent a bit of time checking out your car when it was in primer at sandown, hope you did'nt patent anything :D
I really expect it to be out this year, maybe DDD, totally depends on how much time I get home though, been away most of the year!

Got the slicks fitted & balanced today along with getting the motor back in to stay, some other little odds & ends fitted so it looks like I've done something constructive!
Away tomorow for a few weeks so by the time I get back all the little bits that are stopping it coming together will have arrived 8), I'll get them fitted & have it running then drop the body on.

Sweet  8). The initial cage design is mainly down to Wayne Allmann, with me adding in all the extra bracing and then fully tig-welding the puppy up! Wayne knows a trick or two, and aside from Jim Smith, is the only chap I would recommend for cage work as it's a pretty darn important affair!
I don't think you are going to have any probs with your car handling big hp. The design works really well and is pretty much flex free, as far as I can tell. I did narrow my torsion housings about 5 inches in order to get the rubber under the arches. In doing that, I had to section the frame horns in order for my homemade irs inner clamps to have enough clearance. Not sure looking at your chassis as to whether or not you narrowed your rear end? Might be a thought for the future, as it will give you lots of options for offset and tyre size.

I don't know Jim or Wayne but have seen plenty of their work & its very impressive!
I left everything stock width for few reasons really, originally it was going to be a much much quicker / cheaper build with pretty low spec engine & box, I reckoned I had enough of a learning curve building a basic race car I did'nt need to complicate things!
Turning point was being offered the gearbox, it was just too good not to use, I bought danny allens old turbo setup & intended using that but then got offered this motor.. ;D
I'm probably starting out with what the car would have evolved into after maybe 2 strip downs which has probably saved time & cash - just doesn't seem like it right now!
I'm now running 8.5" wheels & slicks, the wings are only just over 1" over stock so by the time I run out of tyre theres going to be plenty of other issues to fix... ;D

Even on my car I can vouch for the torsions moving - the rear crossmembers inside the body suffered badly from stress fractures where the torsion housings are bolted to them. :o
I'm toying with a similar design but putting a second horizontal hoop a little narrower and further back to brace down onto the ends of the frame horns and up to the main hoop. The idea is that if the worst does happen, the engine will have a modicum of protection.

Apart from a couple of minor items the motors all built up with turbo etc now, just waiting for some more heat wrap for the exhaust & a pipe to the wastegate to make.
The fuel systems also pretty much done, I'm waiting for 1 fitting for the filter & theres a bracket to be made for the fuel pump.
Still a few little jobs left before it can be fired up but the lists getting shorter :D

I finished mounting the fuel cell & pump along with the protector frame, I tied it into the front cage section & the lower beam tube so its protected from the front & underneith.

So I had a shuffle about in the garage so I can get this back on track ;D
I need to get the paint finished but the doors need hung so I can get them gapped & bolt the shell down, theres a lot of movement in the shell with all the guts of it having been cut out of it!
Thats holding up going any further with the alloy paneling too so I need to get it done asap.
Hopefully get some progress this month though 8)

Well I had to take a step backward to go forward here ::)
When I did the beam I didnt take into account how much the dropped spindled would drop it & fitted the adjusters a bit too far round...
At its highest setting it looked ok but had very little chance of ever getting onto a trailer that didnt have 20ft skids...
So off it came to be cut & turned so I can use some of the adjustment to raise it when needed. Also added a towing point welded directly to the beam that'll go through the RH wing.
Now the fuel cell, pump etc can all go back in for good ;D
Just need to make a pair of limit straps for the shocks, bleed the brakes & that's the front end done 8)

The limit straps are made thanks to Jo, all for the cost of a bottle of wine.. :D

The throttle cable was giving problems as no matter how I routed it it was binding & sticking open.. obviously not a good thing :o
The plastic conduit was a tight fit on the cable but at the ends where it met the stops it was crushing slightly which just gripped the cable.
A trip to the DIY store got some 8mm bore steel pipe which could be bent to shape with a small pipe bender, I ended up making it in 3 pieces & drilled out some alley bar to use as sleeves to join it up and be able to adjust exactly how it sat.
At the carb I made a new clamp for the cable & fitted it to a higher point to give a little more leverage, all was going great till I broke the end off the cable where it bolts to the pedal.. >:(

Brakes are now bled, worked better after removing the instructions on bleeding from the reservoirs & connected the line loc the correct way.. ;)

Well now the third... >:(  however gives some time for bits to arrive and be finished in time for me to pick them up. Then it's full steam ahead to get it done, though at this rate you'll be finished before me  ;D

Back onto this today after being sidetracked by an afternoons work on a mates mini that turned into almost 2 full weeks.. ::)

I bought a nice battery box from summit racing but it didn't fit where I wanted it to go so I knocked up a frame for it to sit in which bolts to the floor. Also ordered more ally sheet so I can get the rest of the interior panels made.
Hopefully see the panels back in the next week so they can go on... ;D

Got stuck into the alloy panelling this weekend, wasn't a job I'd been looking forward to but its coming together!
Don't think john Webster or chris issac etc have to loose much sleep though.. ;)

The panels fitted are there to stay, the gaps are where removable panels are going to get access to the msd, turbo etc.
I've started making them but with folded return edges for a bit more strength in them as this new sheet is a bit thinner that I wanted ::)

Hopefully tomorrow will see all the panels fitted, the fronts are done & just need tweaking & refitting.

After that its onto the wiring & getting it fired up ;D

Battery box ready to go in :)

Got the back end finished off today so re-fitted the seat & battery box, will probably move the MSD into the LH foot well somewhere.
Also fitted the side windows, cant really see it in the pics but its got a light blue tint & works well with the paint ;D

Just fitted everything for a quick mock up but its looking good 8)

Also included a pic of another new line from Richie & Jo at RJ Volks performance, plastic headlight lenses, available in us spec like these or uk spec 8)

I do like it plain blue but the plan was always to name it!
Its being done by a proper old school artist / signwriter I used to work with 25+ years ago, its the last thing he'll do before retiring to spain later this month to work on his golf handicap 8)

Much like yourself, garage time is in short supply, so the cars with Phil West right now for engine, brake and suspension set up and those last few hundred little jobs ;D

Lots of progress now, working my way through it checking everything is good, all bolts tight etc  , reset rear suspension as was on bump stops and did all the alignment at same time, got clutch to work smooth as was binding a little at slave cylinder and car now drives and stops 8)
Its on scales now more as a check as not much to adjust, having holley behind driver doesn't help with rear balance much, just need to add driver now ;D

Yesterdays day at Santa Pod!

Pretty much 8 years to the day after starting a quick cheap race car project for a bit of fun I took it down the famous Santa Pod drag strip!

Only managed 2 runs before a brake hydraulic leak stopped play but 1st pass was 17.15sec @ 87.03mph, second pass was 13.81sec @ 100.54mph.

Couldnt be happier with how it ran straight out of the box, got a few minor repairs & improvments to do before adding a bit of boost & trying to go a bit quicker..

A complete 'bucket list' day racing my own car at the pod!

Massive thanks to Jo Clifford & Richie Webb for getting it track ready & babysitting me on my 1st attempt!

Also thanks to the whole gasser garage crew, the help, advice & abuse all contributed to getting it out there! ;D
Now to go quicker... ;)

Shame about the brake problems though. If one has failed are you going through all of them? Just FYI, I ran rear cylinders in my front brakes - balanced up the light front end nicely.

I've ordered a full set of cylinders as they were all new & fitted at the same time.
Also looking at the aftermarket pedal assembly & seeing if I can convert it to duel circuit.

Finally got a chance to get the brakes stripped & work out what went wrong...
Wheel cylinder body corroded in the middle & the bottoms of the Pistons badly pitted :(

Looks like an 8.50 to me. Mine was tagged to 10.00 but this has sill bars and more forward protection in the footbox. I'm sure Kev will confirm though!

Not much of an update but I got around to fitting a boost gauge ;D
Just need to start using the upper end of the scale.. ;)

Been a while since the last update but it's a good one!
Made it to the cal look drag day on Friday afternoon & managed 10 passes over the weekend, had a problem with the staging brake & eventually bypassed it which gave me problems learning to hold it in stage but overall I'm very pleased 8)
Best run was a PB of 11.64 @114, had a 11.8 @ 116 too.
The best feeling run was against the vw powered rail but there were problems with the timing equipment & nothing was recorded!
Very happy with how it ran, feeling dead straight & stable at the top of the track, now it's time to tap into some of the reserves & see what it'll really do.. ;D
